ATL Skills
ATL skills
Description
Learning Experiences:
Self-management:
Since the students will all be experimenting with their own choice of media and techniques, the project will not be guided
step-by-step by the teacher, therefore students will need to determine their goals and organize their time to acheive them.
Additionally, as students have the ability to bring a wide range of materials for their projects, they will be responsible for making
sure they have their materials and supplies with them in class, take care of them, and store them properly.
Self-management
Developing IB Learners
IB Learner Profile
Risk-takers (Courageous)
Description
Risk takers:
Students will incorporate the histories of studied artists into their art making, taking the risk that trying something new might
lead to a greater understanding of art and being a more developed artist. Students will challenge themselves to experiment with
media of which they are less familiar and comfortable.
Integration
International Mindedness
Students will be exposed a variety of cultural art from different time periods and differing national settings which will encourage
them to compare and discuss their own values, discriminations and perspectives in view of other interpretations.
Academic Integrity
In their inquiries, students will be expected to provide evidence of source and acknowledgement of influence from external
media.
They will avoid collusion by critiquing one another's work and using the assessment criteria and materials from the IB guidebook.
Connections
Language Development
Students in this unit will express their understanding of the elements and principles of art and how an artist crafts a work
through verbal discourse and written form - strengthening the subject-specific vocabulary used in articulating ideas in art and
its expression.
Students will use digital support through external electronic applications designed to develop their learning and skill
enhancement.
Service as Action
Become more aware of their own strengths and areas for growth:
As the concepts addressed in the unit relate to identity, the students do various interest surveys and personality questionaries
to help them think about their strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes, goals, etc.
Assessment
Formative Assessment
Task 4: Students will research a portraitist and will learn about their biographical history, their life as an artist, their place in
art history, and their art-making techniques.
Summative Assessment
Students will choose one artist to use as inspiration and use that artist’s perspective to influence their own art making. Each
student will select an appropriate mix of media (at least 4) to create a self-portrait in a unique blend of their own style and “The
Master’s” style.

Students will do regular check-in's with a partner or small group throughout the tasks and summative project.
Learning Experiences
Definitions and examples of proportion, line, and shape have been previously viewed and learned. Students will
review these at the beginning of the unit through discussion and warm-up drawing activity.
Students will:
• practice observational drawing and sketching and reflect on previous drawing experiences.
• develop skills of inspection and scrutiny of secondary sources and further skills of research and identification of reliable
sources.
• explore various techniques to apply 2-dimensional media and ways to combine various media with unity and cohesion.

Student Expectations
Feedback
Students will receive immediate and ongoing feedback from the teacher when working on this project in the classroom.
Students will participate in class critique that addresses aspects that work, some that could be changed, and some questions.
Students can decide how they would like to respond to the feedback.
Students will give and receive feedback from peers during critique. They will give both positive and constructive feedback and
ask questions.
Differentiation
The number of media applied or the complexity of the task will decrease for students who need to have less. I
will provide templates for students to fill in for their writing assignments as necessary.

Reflections
General Reflections
Since the students will all be experimenting with their own choice of media and techniques, the project will not be guided
step-by-step by the teacher, therefore students will need to determine their goals and organize their time to achieve
them. The task will be more on freedom of expression, in accordance with the themes provided.
Students can use cultural symbols and inventions to represent their own identity or that of others. Creating visual art can be
a process that facilitates reflection and self-definition. Some students have understood the function of this symbol, better
reflection is needed.
Most students have demonstrated knowledge of the art form being studied, including concepts, processes, and
demonstrated the acquisition and development of skills and techniques from the art form being studied. As well as, outlining
alternatives, perspectives, and demonstrating the exploration of ideas through the development process to the point of
realization.

you come from.
You can also relate to yourself, for example if you come from another country, you can describe your
experience celebrating Independence Day in this country.
- Set your mind free and use your fantasy, not just copying images from the internet. However, if only to get
inspiration from the internet, it is allowed.
- Use dry medium, such as: pencil, pen, marker, crayon, etc.
- Make it manually and don't use digital techniques like using any apps.

MIxed Media
The term “mixed media” is used to describe artworks composed of a combination of different materials - and
this could be a wide range of items.
For example, if you draw with a pen, then paint over it with watercolours, then add some collage.
Self portrait
Selfies are nothing new. People have been creating self-portraits since the 15th century.
Collage
Collage describes both the technique and the resulting work of art in which pieces of paper,
photographs, fabric and other ephemera are arranged and stick down onto a supporting surface (A4
DRAWING PAPER).
- Any collage material you wish, such as: magazine, paper, rope, etc you wish
Create a self portrait on A4 paper, or in your VAJ using one of the mixed media techniques: COLLAGE
Make creative reflections using illustrations/decorations on what you have made in your VAJ, (MANUALLY -
FREEHAND WRITTING WITH ILLUSTRATION/DECORATIONS)
NOTES:
- NO GLITTER
- This task is part of your SUMMATIVE TASK, which will be uploaded ALL AT ONCE at the SAME TIME with
