TECHNO 1101
BSCE 3-2 Assigment

1. List 3 problems and the innovation(s) that addressed them. Provide a list of references
to support your answers.

(1) Problem: Slow internet connection

From the 1G era that was defined by briefcase-sized phones and short conversations between
a relatively small number of professional people, to the 2G which is demand for mobile services.
From the phones that could fit in the pocket, SMS and mobile internet access were hallmarks of
the 3G world, to the 4G, that makes smartphones, app stores and YouTube possible.

Innovation: 5G (5th generation mobile network)

Up to 100 times faster than 4G, 5G is creating never-before-seen opportunities for people and
businesses. Faster connectivity speeds, ultra-low latency and greater bandwidth is advancing
societies, transforming industries and dramatically enhancing day-to-day experiences. Now, 5G
is completely reshaping both our professional and personal lives by enabling new use cases like
connective vehicles, Augmented Reality and enhanced video and gaming.

5G runs on the same radio frequencies that are currently being used for smartphone, on Wi-Fi
networks and in satellite communications, but it enables technology to go a lot further. Beyond
being able to download a full-length HD movie to your phone in seconds, 5G is really about
connecting things everywhere reliably and without lag so people can measure, understand and
manage things in real time.

(2) Problem: Storing Files and Data

Practically every form of data storage like hard drive and flash drives have the potential to be
corrupted. Stray particles can interfere with most forms of data storage, and anything relying on
magnetic strips or electric storage can be corrupted by electromagnetic interference. Once your
data is gone, their gone. Without multiple copies this can lead to complete loss of data, or very
expensive attempts via professional data retrieval services.

Innovation: Cloud services

From storing data offline, cloud services, also known as cloud computing, allow files to be saved
on the internet without needing external storage equipment. This disruptive technology
represents great advantages for companies because it allows users to enjoy management tools
from any place in the world by just connecting from their device.
All cloud storage options provide file-sharing features, which help you to share your file with
other users. You can either send a file to another user or invite multiple users to view your data.
By only using the cloud storage service, the business outsources the data storage problem. By
using online data storage, the enterprise reduces the expenses of internal resources. With this
technology, the company itself does not need any inner power and support to manage and store
its data.

(3) Problem: Data Privacy

Not long ago, a phone was mainly used to make calls, send text messages, or play pre-installed
Snake games. But with so much of our daily activities now depending on smartphones, it’s more
important than ever to secure our devices. I think data privacy is still one of the biggest business
tech issues around.

Innovation: Fingerprint Authentication, Facial Recognition and Iris Scanning

Thankfully, there are several authentication methods to unlock phone devices. Along with PIN
codes and passwords, smartphone manufacturers have introduced and innovated data security
with biometric authentication methods, such as facial recognition, fingerprint, and iris scanning,
to give users a faster and more convenient way to access their phones.

Fingerprint recognition is a secure authentication method that provides quick access to a device.
The sensor looks for specific characteristics of your finger, such as the ridges and bifurcations
of your fingerprint. Facial recognition arrived on the Android 4.0 operating system, also called
the Android Ice Cream Sandwich version. It uses the front camera of the phone to take your
picture and use it as a baseline to unlock the phone.

2. Read about the Ishikawa diagram and together with the “5 Whys”, identify the root
causes(s) of a need or pain point. You may use your own example of a need or pain
point or any one of the examples given in this module. If you have started your thesis
work, you may apply the “5 Whys” to identify the root cause of the technical problem that
you are solving with your thesis.
