INTRODUCTION

Our country is blessed with so many land features such as mountains and volcanoes. This feature can be sources of different
minerals or can be used for agricultural purposes. For example, we have the majestic and world renowned Mayon Volcano. Because
of its activity, it produces fertile slopes and plains which are used by the locals to grow their crops. Also, found in the northeastern
coast of Luzon, we have the Sierra Madre mountain range which is home to many endemic species of flora and fauna.
Have you ever wondered why our country is endowed with these kind of geologic features? Well, if your answer is YES, then
this module will help you find the answer to your question.
In this module we will study thoroughly the framework that will enable us to understand how and why several features of the
Earth continuously change. This theory is what we call “Plate Tectonics.” This describes the events within the Earth that give rise to
mountain ranges, volcanoes, earthquakes and other features of the Earth’s surface.

layer or lithosphere is made up of the crust and upper mantle is broken into large rocky plates.

CONCEPT NOTE

Development of better technologies and techniques in geography and oceanograpahy led to the discovery of a
theory more encompassing than the continental drift hypothesis the plate tectonics theory. The discovery gave scientist
the idea that the Earth’s surface os not a static and intact landscape but an ever changing structure composed of several
segments called tectonic plates. The theory suggest that these plates are constantly moving independently in a process of
plate construction and destruction.
The uppermost mantle and the overllying crust have a strong rigid layer called the lithosphere which is separated
into several segmented plates. The lithospher in turn lies over a weaker region in
the upper mantle, the asthenosphere. Given the extreme temperature and pressure
in the asthenosphere, rocks in this region are near melting point and have the
tendency to flow. As a result, the earths rigid shell is detached from the layers
below allowing the plates to move independently.
It was Alfred Wegener, an Austrian climatologist, who first noted the
theory on the movement of the Earth’s land masses
and is known today as the modern Plate Tectonic
Theory (Oskin, 2017). This theory states that the
Earth’s crust is composed of several broken plates
that continuously move either away, past, or
towards each other.

2 types of Tectonic plates
1. Oceanic Plates – the crust in the ocean basins that is characterized by a thin but dense lithosphere composed
mainly of silica-magnesia-rich material (basalt).
2. Continental Plates - thicker than the oceanic plate but less dense, composed primarily of silica-alumina material
(granite).
