April 18, 2010
Third Sunday of Easter

A Community of Praise and Prayer

Welcome to worship this morning. If you are a guest, please take advantage of any of our activities or
programs, they are open to all, member and friend alike. If you are visiting because of medical treatment
at the Clinic we offer our prayers for healing; prayer cards are in the pew racks. We invite you to join us
for a time of coffee and fellowship in the social hall following the 8:30 service and in the foyer following
the 11:00 service.

“The Lord is My Shepherd”

led by members of the Calvin and Youth Choirs and
Nothing But Angels and Joyous Praise Handbell/handchime Choirs and youth instrumentalists.
Barbara Depman, accompanist; Jennifer Taylor, oboe; Lee Afdahl, organ

Gathering
Prelude Fanfare for a Celebration Lee Afdahl
Our worship begins with the prelude. Let the power of the music speak to you of God’s glory;
let its quietness tell you of God’s peace; let its beauty lift your hearts in prayer.

Greeting and Welcome

Call to Worship
Shepherd your people with your staff, O Lord;
The flock that belongs to you.
For thus says the Lord God:
I myself will search for my sheep.
I will seek the lost and bring back the strayed.
I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak.
I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them.
They shall not fear any longer or be dismayed.

♦ Hymn 487 When Morning Gilds the Skies Laudes Domini

Call to Reconciliation with God
We know the wrong turns we have taken, the poor choices that shape our lives, the
mistakes that have hurt God and others. Let us confess our sins to the One who leads us
into life.

Silent Confession

Anthem O Lamb of God, I Come Raymond H. Hann

For text refer to hymn 370

♦ Please stand if you are able.

Hymns/songs with 3 digits or less are found in the hardcover Presbyterian Hymnal.
Hymns/songs with 4 digits are found in the soft-cover Sing the Faith in the pew rack.
Unison Confession
Taught by our culture to want everything, we confess an emptiness that sends us
searching for more and more. Our constant desire for greener pastures fills us with
lust and envy. Our belief that still waters are stagnant sends us thirsting for
whitewater thrills and adventures. Our trust in the promises of the world leads us
away from the shelter you offer. Forgive us, Lord, that we might find rest in your
heart, healing from your hands, and unity in the life together as disciples of Jesus
Christ, our Lord and Savior.

Anthem A Prayer for Humility Mark Patterson

Mighty God and gentle Lamb, Lord of all creation, how we long to know you,
how we strive to serve you, help us now to love you even more.
Give us humble hearts to praise you and list’ning ears to hear your voice, willing hands to serve you,
thankful spirits to rejoice. Lord of all, we adore you, and we bring this prayer before you:
Create in us humble hearts. When our thoughts turn proud, remind us of the grace you freely give
when we lose our way, Lord, find us, draw us close to you again.

Words of Life (from Mathew.9:36 and Hebrews 13:9)

When Jesus saw the crowds he had compassion for them, because they were harassed
and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Our God is the God of peace, the God who brought back from the dead our Lord
Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep. Through Christ, God is working among
us. Thanks be to God, we are forgiven and restored.

♦ Gloria Patri Hymn 579 Glory Be to the Father Henry Greatorex

The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you!
Let us share a sign of peace with one another.

Anthem Feed My Lambs Natalie Sleeth

Feed My lambs, tend My sheep, over all a vigil keep; in My name lead them forth gently as a shepherd.
When they wander, when they stray, their protector be. As ye do unto My flock, thus ye do to Me.
Unto all who lose the way, hope and comfort be.

Anthem I Am His Lamb Lloyd Larson

The Lord is my shepherd and I am His lamb. He leads me and keeps me wherever I am.
Through valleys of darkness to green meadowland; The Lord is my shepherd and I am His lamb.
The Lord is my shepherd and I am His lamb. His rod and His staff are wherever I am.
Surrounded by enemies, I’m held in His hand. The Lord is my shepherd and I am His lamb.
The Lord is my shepherd forevermore. Amen.

Anthem I Am His Child Moses Hogan
I may not be all that you are, I may not be a shining star but what I am I thank the Lord for making me His child.
Thank you, Lord, for hearing ev’ry prayer, thank you, Lord, for just being there, thank you, Lord, thank you, Lord,
for I am not worthy of your love. So don’t use me or abuse me, for I am His child. Don’t tease me or mistreat me,
for I’m still His child, you can even talk about me. But I’m still His child.

Anthem The King of Love My Shepherd Is St. Columba

Arr. Vicki Hancock Wright
Choir: The King of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never.
I nothing lack if I am his, and he is mine forever.
Where streams of living water flow, my ransomed soul he leadeth:
and where the verdant pastures grow, with food celestial feedeth.
In death’s dark vale I fear no ill, with thee, dear Lord, beside me;
thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me.

Anthem Be Not Afraid Taylor Davis

Be not afraid, for I have redeemed you. Be not afraid, I’ve called you by name. My love for you is everlasting,
my love for you shall have no end. When you pass through the waters, I will surround you.
When you pass through the floods, they will not sweep o’er. When you walk through the fire,
you will not be consumed. You are my child, you are precious to me.
You are my child, and I’ll love you always. Just hold my hand, and I’ll lead you home.
When you feel lost, always remember: I am right here, just call out my name.

Anthem Go, My Children, with My Blessing John Leavitt

Go, My children, with My blessing, never alone. Waking, sleeping, I am with you: You are My own.
You are mine, in My love’s baptismal river I have made you Mine forever.
Go, My children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure. Here you learned how much I love you, what I can cure.
Here you heard My dear Son’s story; here you touched Him, saw His glory,
Go, My children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure.
Go, My children, fed and nourished, closer to Me; grow in love and love by serving,
joyful and free. Here My Spirit’s power filled you; here His tender comfort stilled you.
Go, My children, fed and nourished, joyful and free. I the Lord will bless and keep you and give you peace;
I the Lord will smile upon you and give you peace: I the Lord will be your
Father, Savior, Comforter and Brother. Go, My children; I will keep you and give you peace.
