Title: Extracting iodine water from water using a separating funnel.

Aim: To separate iodine from water using a separating funnel.

Method/apparatus: beaker ,funnel ,iodine solution ,chloroform , beaker measuring measuring

………………….25 ml ,cylinder ,retort stand and clamp.

Procedure:
1. The apparatus was setted up as shown in the diagram.
2. 25 ml of aqueous iodine solution was placed in a separating funnel.
3. 25 ml of organic solvent was placed in the separating funnel.
4. The separating funnel was covered and shaken thoroughly then placed on the
retort stand.
5. The layers were allowed to separate
6. The observations were noted
7. The lower layer was drained into the beaker
Observation:

When the chloroform was mixed with the iodine the chloroform changed from colorless
to violet and formed two layers. When the bottom layer was drained into the beaker and
poured back into the 25 ml beaker. The Measurement was slightly over the 25 ml mark
than before.
Discussion:

When the iodine was poured into the 25 ml beaker and then poured into the separating
funnel the color was orange. When mixing the components the funnel had to be removed
from the clamp and helped carefully . Turned upside down, when upside down open the
tap to remove pressure and shake thoroughly 2-3 times

When iodine was mixed with the chloroform and shaken thoroughly. The chloroform
changed from colorless to violet. When both of the solutions are mixed layers will begin
to form. The water from the iodine will move out of the iodine and form a top layer.
All the iodine will remain in the chloroform because the iodine is not soluble in water;
there was however a small ring of the chloroform and iodine at the top of the water.
These solutions are immiscible so when mixed two layers will begin to form.

● The organic layer

● The aqueous layer

The organic layer contains organic solvent or the chloroform

The aqueous layer is water based so it contains the water

The chloroform remains at the bottom because it is more dense than water.

When the organic layer was drained into the beaker and poured back into the 25 ml
beaker . when the iodine mixed with chloroform was poured into the beaker it was a little
more than what was measured before , that was because some of the water had gone into
the beaker.

Conclusion: In conclusion iodine water was separated using a separating funnel.
