Backup and
Restoration Overview
Overview

Accurate configurations are key elements for proper system operation. If the
configurations are not proper, system operation will be greatly affected, even leading to
irretrievable loss for system owners.
During the device operation procedure, you may need to modify the configurations
sometimes. To validate the modified configurations and make sure the proper
configurations in abnormal cases, the system provides configuration file backup and
restoration measures, which improves system serviceability.

Backup

Configuration backup refers to a procedure of automatically saving the CLI or SNMP

operations. If an FTP/SFTP server is configured, this procedure also refers to
periodically uploading the configuration files saved on NEs to the FTP/SFTP server.
Backup modes include manual backup and automatic backup.
 Automatic backup refers to that the system periodically backs up configurations
through periodical tasks to avoid configuration loss. Upon failures, backup files can
be used to restore the system.
 Manual backup refers to that system operation and maintenance personnel save
the system configurations so that system configurations can be restored upon
inextricable failures.

Restoration

Restoration refers to the procedure of restoring system configurations when

configurations are lost upon system failures. Restoration modes include:
 Manual restoration
 One-key restoration

Chapter 2
Precautions
Requirements for Maintenance Personnel

Before performing backup and restoration operations, maintenance engineers must

learn the following:
 MML commands and SNMP operation interfaces of this product.
 Network structure and server deployment of this product.
 Files and their paths of all servers of this product.
 Configurations of FTP/SFTP SERVER user and password.
To guarantee the backup and restoration efficiency and prevent improper operations,
maintenance engineers must meet the following requirements:
 They must have received necessary trainings before starting to maintain the
equipment.
 They must be familiar with the procedures for performing operations on the
equipment.
 They must observe operation regulations and industry safety regulations strictly to
ensure personal and equipment safety.

Forbidden Operations

The following operations are forbidden in the backup and restoration procedure:
 Backup and restoration in busy hours is forbidden.

Note

Backup operation may affect the disk I/O and greatly affect the operation of the
existing network. This operation must be performed when the system is idle,
for example, at 0:00-4:00 in the early morning. Before backup operation, strict
examination and approval is required to be performed by specially-assigned persons.

 Table creation script execution is forbidden.

 Service unloading is forbidden.

3.1 Backup Policies

Overview

Backup is performed in two modes:

 Automatic
 Manual

Automatic Backup Policy

The system backs up all configurations of NEs through periodical tasks, including
saving the current system operation configurations to configuration files and uploading
configuration files to the FTP/SFTP server.
Backup configuration files are saved in the Flash of the product or uploaded to the
specified directory of the FTP/SFTP server, refer to Table 3-1.

Manual Backup Policy

Before capacity expansion and upgrade, to guarantee system security, you must
manually back up data so that data can be restored as needed. For the manual backup
policy, refer to Table 3-2.

3.2 Configuring the FTP server

This procedure describes how to configure the FTP server taking the FTP software
Wftpd32.exe as an example.
To configure the FTP server, perform the following steps:
1. Run the Wftpd32.exe program. The No log file open window appears, see Figure
3-1.

3.3 Backing Up Configuration Files

To save system operation configurations, you can save the current system
configurations to configuration files or upload the configuration files to the configured
FTP/SFTP server.

Context

During the configuration file saving procedure, the CLI and SNMP operations on
the system can be performed only after configuration files are saved. The file write
procedure takes a long period.

Steps

1. Run the write command.

2. Run the copy ftp/copy sftp command to upload the configuration files.

Note
Because FTP has potential risk in file transferring, it is recommended to use SFTP to
download and upload files.

Verification

The information saved in a configuration file can be verified in one of the following
modes:
 Enter a command to display the contents of the configuration file, or compare the
sizes of the files saved on the FTP/SFTP server and Flash.
 Open the configuration file saved on the FTP/SFTP server by using the text editor to
check the file or verify that the files saved on the FTP/SFTP server and Flash have
the same size.

3.4 Managing NE Configuration Data Backup Tasks

NMS supports configuring and executing NE configuration data backup tasks. After
the tasks are configured, the NMS automatically executes the tasks and backs up the
NE configuration data to the NMS server. In case of data loss, the configuration data
uploaded to the NMS server can be used for restoration.
There are three default configuration data backup tasks for the OLT, MDU and MSAN
devices. Users can execute these default tasks, modify the task parameters, query the
task execution status, or configure new tasks.

Context

It is recommended to execute the task to back up the NE configuration data at 00:00:00

once a day.

Steps

1. In the NetNumen U31 Unified Management System – Client window, choose

Maintenance > Task Management > Show Timing Task. The Task Management
view is displayed, see Figure 3-6.

4.3 Restoring System Configurations

In the device operation procedure, if system operation boards are replaced due to
hardware failures or configurations are lost due to software failures, you must perform
some operations to re-configure the devices properly.
Through configuration restoration, proper device configurations are restored and devices
continue operating properly.

Prerequisite

Before restoring configuration files, ensure that the system software operates properly.
After an FTP/SFTP server is configured for the system, the system can interconnect with
the FTP/SFTP server through a network.

4-2 SJ-20200929135033-014 | 2020-09-30 (R1.1)

4 Restoration

Context

During the configuration restoration procedure, services on NEs may be interrupted and
configurations are re-configured. Before saving the existing configurations, distribute the
configurations onto external servers.
Before configuration restoration, check whether the key services of the configuration
files to be loaded are properly configured. Make sure that the new configuration files are
normal and system configurations can be properly restored.

Steps

1. Set the FTP/SFTP server.

2. Copy the loaded configuration files to the local Flash through the FTP/SFTP server.
3. Restart the device and load the system by using the new configuration files.

Note

Because FTP has potential risk in file transferring, it is recommended to use SFTP to
download and upload files.

Verification

After NE configurations are reloaded, you can run the show running-config command
to check whether the configurations for key services are proper.
