A. CONTENT STANDARDS
The learners demonstrate understanding of motion in terms of distance and time

B. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
The learners should be able to propose an unusual tool an or device using electromagnet that is useful for
home school or community.

C. MELC
Use different measuring tools and standard units in measuring time and distance of objects in motion.
S5FE-IIIb-2

D. ENABLING COMPETENCY
Describe the motion of an object by tracing and measuring its change in position (distance travelled) over a
period.

I. Objective
1. Identify the different non-standard measurement tools.
2. Appreciate the importance of non-standard unit.

3. Use the non-standard measurement to measure objects inside the classroom.

II. Subject Matter

A. Subject: Importance of Using Appropriate Tools and Standard Units
B. Reference: TG page 32, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrQqkwdAK2M
C. Materials: realia, ppt
D. Values: Appreciation of body parts
E. Science Processes: observing, inferring, comparing, describing.
F. Integration: English, MAPEH, Math
G. Concept:
What does non-standard measurement mean?
Nonstandard units of measurement are units of measurement that aren't typically used. For
instance, suppose we wanted to measure the distance from one wall of a room to the opposite wall.
Our first instinct is to use feet but suppose we don't have a ruler handy. This is where we can get
creative.
III. Content Standards
A. Elicit
1. Review:
Name the following measurement tools.
B. Engage
The teacher will call the shortest and the tallest pupils in the class and will let them to measure the
length of their body by using their body parts. The teacher will record the measurement on the board.

- How will you describe the measurement of the two pupils?

- Why do you think their measurements vary?
- What shall we do to obtain accurate measurement?
C. Explore
1. Group Work Standard
- What are the things need to consider in doing group work?

 Group Activity
Group 1: Write down the measurement of the object using “dangkal” or hand.
1. Notebook
2. Table
3. Chair
4. Ruler
5. The height of your classmate
 Group 2: Write down the measurement of the object using “cubit” or elbow to hand.
1. Notebook
2. Table
3. Blackboard
4. The height of your classmate
5. Bulletin board
 Group 3: Write down the measurement of the object using “foot span.”
1. From door to window
2. From Entrance to exit
3. From row 1 to row 3
4. From blackboard to bulletin board
5. From blackboard going to row 4

D. Explain
 Reporting of group activity.
 Process of the group presentation
1. What did you use to get the measure of the objects?
2. What is the longest?
3. What is the shortest?
4. Can we measure the object by using our body parts?

E. Elaborate
What is non- standard type of measurement?
Non standard measurement is any unit or item that isn’t standard metric or customary unit which can
be used to measure something.

F. Evaluation
Instruction: Write True if the statement is true and False if the statement is false. Answers only.
1. Hand span and Footstep are type of non-standard measurement.
2. Non-standard measurement is much reliable than standard measurement.
3. Ruler is non-standard tool of measurement.
4. Thermometer, meter stick and tape measure are type of standard measurement.
5. The SI unit for length is meter.
G. Extend
How can you take care of your body?

IV. Assignment:
Using Hand span or “dangkal”, measure the following.
1. Radio
2. Laptop
3. Cellphone
4. Television
5. Height of the Door
