WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED: TYPICAL QUESTIONS TO CRITICAL APPROACHES TO

LITERATURE

TYPE OF CRITICAL APPROACHES TO LITERATURE:

Formalist Criticism
TITLE OF STORY, POEM OR MOVIE:
The story of an hour by Cody Armstrong
QUESTIONS:
What does the form of the work say about its content?
ANSWER:
The story is short, made up of a series of short paragraphs, many of which consists of just
two or three sentences. This story can be read quickly, but the impact it makes is powerful.
The “ heart disease” mentioned at the end of the story echoes the “heart trouble” discussed
at the beginning, intensifying the twist ending and bringing the story to a satisfying close.

TYPE OF CRITICAL APPROACHES TO LITERATURE:

Biographical Criticism
TITLE OF STORY, POEM OR MOVIE:
To build a fire by Jack London
QUESTIONS:
What influence —people, ideas, movements, events, evident in the writer’s life does the
work reflect?
ANSWER:
When Jack London wrote “To Build a Fire” he embraced the idea of naturalism because it
mirrored the events of daily life. It showed how humans had to be wary at every corner
because at any time death could be there, waiting for them to make a mistake and forfeit
their lives. He used the most realistic literary movement, to show how violent and uncaring
nature really is and how no matter what you do nature will always be there. London also
presented the basic idea of Darwinism and the survival of the fittest, basically if you are
dumb you will die.

TYPE OF CRITICAL APPROACHES TO LITERATURE:

Historical Criticism
TITLE OF STORY, POEM OR MOVIE:
12 Years a Slave (2013) directed by Steve McQueen based on Solomon Northup’s Slave
narrative.
QUESTIONS:
Is the author part of a dominant culture, and how does that status affect the work?
ANSWER:
Yes, 12 Years a Slave is a testimony to the power of the human spirit and the enduring
determination of hope. Solomon Northup is deceived, kidnapped, abused, removed from
family, deprived of identity, and beaten into a long, weary, unjustified submission. Yet he is
never broken. Even in his worst days of sorrow lived under the cruelties of Edwin Epps, he
never gives up hope that one day he will be free. He never loses faith in his friends,
constantly assured that if he can only get word to the North then they will indeed come to his
rescue. And they do. In the end, Solomon Northup’s heartbreaking journey uplifts because in
his testimony is evidence that faith and hope can endure—and triumph.

TYPE OF CRITICAL APPROACHES TO LITERATURE:

Gender Criticism
TITLE OF STORY, POEM OR MOVIE:
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
QUESTIONS:
What type of roles do men/ women have in the text? Do any stereotypical characterizations
of men/ women appear?
ANSWER:
Mad Max: Fury Road stands out for its unapologetic feminist streak. Most obviously, this is
manifested in the compelling female characters, and the (apparently, distressingly) radical
notion that women are not property. But the film has just as much to say about men —
specifically what masculinity is, and what place it has in our society.

TYPE OF CRITICAL APPROACHES TO LITERATURE:

Psychological Criticism
TITLE OF STORY, POEM OR MOVIE:
A Dangerous Method (2011)
QUESTIONS:
What does the work suggest about the psychological being of its author?
ANSWER:
“A Dangerous Method” won’t require a second hand. The new film by director David
Cronenberg, based on scriptwriter Christopher Hampton’s own play and “drawn from true-life
events,” tells the fictionalised story of the ambiguous six-year relationship between Sigmund
Freud and Carl Jung and the patient who ties them together.

TYPE OF CRITICAL APPROACHES TO LITERATURE:

Sociological Criticism
TITLE OF STORY, POEM OR MOVIE:
The story of an hour
QUESTIONS:
What is the economic status of the characters?
ANSWER:
Chopin was an independent spirit who smoked cigarettes, walked alone through the city, and
argued passionately with others about politics and social problems, much to the dismay of
the other New Orleans housewives in her social circle.

TYPE OF CRITICAL APPROACHES TO LITERATURE:

Mythological Criticism
TITLE OF STORY, POEM OR MOVIE:
Moana (2016)
QUESTIONS:
What kind of character types appear in the work? How might they be classified?
ANSWER:
Moana is the vibrant, tenacious and optimistic daughter of the Chief of Motunui, thriving on
her island but drawn to the ocean.

TYPE OF CRITICAL APPROACHES TO LITERATURE:

Reader- response Criticism
TITLE OF STORY, POEM OR MOVIE:
My Papa’s Waltz
QUESTIONS:
How does the interaction of text and reader create meaning?
ANSWER:
Imagery is used to make readers perceive things with their five senses. Theodore has used
imagery in this poem such as, “But I hung on like death”, “Still clinging to your shirt” and “My
right ear scraped a buckle” to show how the boy stayed with his father.

TYPE OF CRITICAL APPROACHES TO LITERATURE:

Deconstructionist Criticism
TITLE OF STORY, POEM OR MOVIE:
I want my son to be a murderer
QUESTIONS:
What is the binary opposition that govern the text?
ANSWER:
In short story “I Want My Son to Become a Murderer” shows a binary opposition which
leads into an understanding that there is no hierarchy opposition. Derrida deconstruction
in literary work aims to show logical and rhetorical non-equivalence between what is
explicitly written and what is implicitly hidden in the text.

PSYCHOLOGICAL CRITICISM
Cat in the Rain '' written by Ernest Hemingway is about an American Couple who spends
their holidays in an Italian Hotel. The story is about discontent, struggle, selfishness,
helplessness, loneliness, conflict and insecurity. This is an intriguing story, of the relatively
few in Hemingway's writings told from the point of view of a woman.
Although the point of view is third-person omniscient, our sympathies as reader lie with the
female protagonist, referred to only as "the American wife" the story work its way through her
consciousness as she spies a stray cat huddled under a dripping table outside an Italian
Hotel and her attempt to rescue it. The title of the story may also be symbolic in many ways
the cat that the American wife herself, she feels helpless throughout the story.
