analysis and design of modern digital communication systems
over a noisy and band-limited channel.
• Use the essential tools necessary in the performance evaluation
of different digital transmission methods and the corresponding

modeling, analysis, and design and performance evaluation of
modern digital communication systems.s
Competences to be acquired:
• A student will understand the principle operation of digital
communication system, design receivers which serve for
different purposes.
Course Contents

Chapter 1: Introduction
Essential elements of digital communication systems;
communication channels.
Chapter 2: Characterization of communication signals and
systems
Representation of band pass and low pass signals and systems;
signal space representation; orthogonal expansion of signals;
Modulated waveforms and their vector space representation;
spectral representation of modulated signals; power spectra of
modulated signals.
Chapter 3: Optimum Receivers for AWGN Channels
Optimum Detection; ML Detector; MAP detector; optimum
detection and error probability for memory less signaling and
signaling with memory; Bandwidth and dimensionality;
regenerative repeaters and link budget analysis.
Chapter 4: Carrier and Symbol Synchronization
Signal parameter estimation; the likelihood function; carrier phase
and symbol timing estimation; Performance characteristics of ML
estimators.
Chapter 5: Digital Communication Through Band-Limited
Channels
Characterization of band-limited channels. Signal design: Design
for no Inter symbol Interference (ISI) and for controlled ISI.
Optimum maximum likelihood receivers: the inter-symbol
interference (ISI) channel model. Linear equalization: mean
square error (MSE) equalizer and decision feedback equalization
(DFE).
Chapter 6: Spread Spectrum Signals for Digital
Communications
Model of Spread Spectrum Digital Communication
System; Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum Signals; Frequency
Hopped Spread Spectrum Signals; Other Types of Spread
Spectrum Signals; Synchronization of Spread Spectrum Systems
Chapter 7: Recent Trends in Communication Technologies
