Salonga
was born on February 22, 1971,
in the Ermita district of Manila,
Philippines to Feliciano Genuino
Salonga, a naval rear admiral
and shipping company owner,
and María Ligaya Alcántara, née
Imutan of Pulupandan, Negros
Occidental.
She began her career as a child star in the
Philippines, making her professional debut in 1978
at the age of seven in the musical The King and I.
She followed that with a steady childhood career on-stage,
appearing in musicals such as Annie and The Sound of Music
before recording her first solo album
Small Voice (1981), at the age of ten. The album was certified gold
in the Philippines
Salonga went on to host her own musical TV series, Love, Lea.
Salonga had her intercontinental breakthrough when she was
cast as Vietnamese peasant Kim in Miss Saigon
She also originated the role on Broadway in April 1991 (Miss
Saigon)
