Multiple award-winning actress and singer Lea
Salonga is renown across the world for her powerful
voice and perfect pitch.  She is best known for her
Tony Award winning role in Miss Saigon. In addition
to the Tony, she has won the Olivier, Drama Desk,
Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World Awards. She
was also the first Asian to play Eponine in the
musical Les Misérables on Broadway and returned to
the beloved show as Fantine in the 2006 revival.

IN HER WORKS
She is known for being the first Asian woman to enter Miss
Saigon. She’s also the first Asian Actress Singer to win a Tony
Award for her performance as Kim in the original Broadway
Musical Production of Miss Saigon. Lea’s the first Asian to play
Eponine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway and
returned to the beloved show as Fantine in the 2006 revival. At
present, so much of our people today are being influenced by
the Western influences such as cartoons, television series, food,
games and other sources of entertainment.

IN HER WORKS
How do any of these relate to nationhood? Well,
Lea inspired Filipinos to be proud of being a Filipino
(Lea as the Pride of the Philippines). When she sings
Filipino songs, she reminds us that we belong to the
Philippines and of our culture as Filipino people. After
she made a name for herself, she even used her voice
and did numerous of concert for fund-raising and to
support local and international charities.

IN HER WORKS
Her song “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan” also shows nationhood
because the description of the song that San Pedro's mother,
Soledad Diestro used to soothe her kids to sleep by singing a
lullaby or also known as “hele”. It shows nationhood itself
because apart from that, the song was telling about the
relationship between a mother comforting her child. It reflects in
every Filipino mother how they soothed their children to sleep
by singing a lullaby.
PIONEER
Lea Salonga is renown across the world for her
POWERFUL VOICE and PERFECT PITCH. Many fans of
all ages recognize Lea as the singing voice of Princess
Jasmine from Aladdin and Fa Mulan for Mulan and
Mulan II that’s why she is a Disney Princess Legend.
She joined at Les Miserables where she performed
both Eponine and Fantine in different productions.
Since her appearance in Broadway, people changed
how they looked at us Filipinos. Lea Salonga is also
currently one of the coaches in “The Voice Kids
Philippines”.

She began performing professionally when she was
seven years old, and from there, she continued to
perform well at the Philippines and even
internationally, now.
Awards
For her portrayal of the beloved princesses,
the Walt Disney Company bestowed her with
the honor of “Disney Legend” (2011).
Lea garnered a Craig Noel nomination for
Outstanding Featured Performance in a
Musical for her performance in the Old
Globe production and can be heard on the
show’s original cast album. She received
numerous awards, nominations and
recognitions for her songs and theater
performances.
Awards
For her role in “Miss Saigon”, she took home
several prestigious awards. These include a
Laurence Oliver Award, the Drama Desk Award,
Theatre World Award, and the Outer Critics
Circle Award, all for Best Actress in a Musical.
Nominations were given to her for roles in “Les
Miserables”, “Flower Drum Song”, “Allegiance”,
and “Baby”.
Awards
The Philippine government, in recognition of her
talents, awarded her with several honors:
- President Corazon Aquino gave her the
Presidential Award of Merit in 1990, while
she received the Order of Lakandula from
then-President Gloria Arroyo in 2007.
Additionally, in the same year, the House of
Representatives gave her the Congressional
Medal of Achievement.
