Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy (Ukrainian: Володи́мир

Олекса́ндрович Зеле́нський; born 25 January 1978) is a Ukrainian


politician and actor who has served as president of Ukraine since 2019.
Zelenskyy was born in Kryvyi Rih, in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast (province)
of southern Ukraine. He studied law at the Kryvyi Rih State Economic
Institute and worked as a comedian and actor for many years before
entering politics. In 2010, he co-founded the production company Kvartal
95, which produced the television series Servant of the People, in which
Zelenskyy played a high school history teacher who becomes president of
Ukraine after a rant against government corruption goes viral.

Zelenskyy announced his candidacy for president of Ukraine on 31


December 2018. He ran as an independent candidate and campaigned on a
platform of anti-corruption, economic reform, and closer ties with the
European Union. Zelenskyy won the election in a landslide, defeating
incumbent president Petro Poroshenko with 73.22% of the vote. He was
inaugurated as president on 20 May 2019.

Since taking office, Zelenskyy has focused on fighting corruption,


reforming the judiciary, and improving the economy. He has also worked to
strengthen Ukraine's ties with the European Union and NATO. Zelenskyy
has been praised for his charisma and his ability to connect with voters.
However, he has also been criticized for his lack of experience in
government and for his close ties to oligarchs.
