Do Your Work to the Best of Your Ability: Industriousness
“I do not know anyone who has got to the top without hard work,
That is the recipe. It will not always get you to the top;
but should get you pretty near.”
--Margaret Thatcher—

We, Filipinos, are known all over the world for our work ethics. We are generally industrious. Industriousness is
a virtue we develop over the years. The younger or earlier we start practicing and forming ourselves to be industrious,
the more that it will be instilled in us and it will benefit those who are around us. We are not lazy people, we are
industrious nation.
DEVELOPING THE VIRTUE OF INDUSTRIOUSNESS
We have met people who are hardworking or industrious.
This means that this is an achievable value. Being industrious is very
practical. If we accomplish our tasks excellently and promptly, these
will benefit the community.
Industrious people do well in school and will eventually do
well in their future. The word “industrious” comes from the Latin
word industriosus which means “diligent or active.” An industrious
person is constantly active. Industrious people are persevering and
determined to finish a task. They rest when needed, but they are not
seen sitting or lying around when there are tasks to be done.
CAUSES OF LAZINESS
1. Selfishness. People who are selfish are only concerned about their own comfort and disregard the effect of their
actions on others. They do not care about how others will feel or who would suffer because of their behavior.
2. Arrogance. An arrogant person is someone who lacks respect for people and the community. He or she is bold
enough to refuse to work. Arrogant people are shameless, too. They do not care if other people are
inconvenienced by their refusal to do their task.
3. Irresponsibility. An irresponsible person refuses to do the things he or she has to accomplish. Lazy people lack
the commitment to do their share of work. It is difficult to work with this type of people. If he or she fails to do
the task, somebody has to carry the burden of doing the task that was left unaccomplished.
EFFECT OF LAZINESS
The effects of laziness are immediately observed because we
can easily identify those who did not do their tasks. A lazy person would
also feel the consequences of his or her misbehavior. Do you not feel
embarrassed when you show up in school without your homework 0r
project? Those who fail in class are usually those who choose to not
fulfill their requirements, listen during discussion, or review for their
exams. They end up regretting not doing the tasks that should be done.
 Failure
 Embarrassment
 Regret
 Weak character
An Industrious Person
To be industrious means to willingly work hard and to be consistently active. Without hard work, we cannot
achieve anything.
Industriousness is doing what you have to do with passion. A task may be easy or difficult but that has nothing to
do with being industrious. It refers more to working with gusto in view achieving satisfactory results. Being industrious
requires that you do not spare any effort to produce something truly great. If you are industrious, you would put in the
extra time and effort needed to complete the task it hand.
A person is industrious when he or she:
1. Always tries to do work well;
2. Finishes work on time;
3. Uses time well;
4. Does not waste time on meaningless activities;
5. Does not have to be told or reminded to do work;
6. Makes sure to do homework on time;
7. Finds time to help at home;
8. Does not use studies as an excuse for not helping at
home;
9. Also gives time to self for rest and recreation;
10. Makes sure to have daily time for studying;
11. Gives his or her best to pay attention and participate in
classroom discussions and activities;
12. Offers help to someone who needs assistance;
13. Works cheerfully; and
14. Does not complain or grumble while doing a task.
Effects of Industriousness
When we are industrious, we also develop self-respect. At the end of the day, we would feel proud of what we
have done. We feel good that we have contributed to making someone’s life more comfortable toward making the
world a better place.
A family of hardworking individuals multiplied a thousand times over gives us a nation of industrious men and
women who will help build the nation. Training and formation for good character and for becoming an excellent worker,
manager, or entrepreneur in the future must start now. Our values grow with us which would hone us to become better
individuals.
