HL-LHC:
Timeline

HL-LHC is expected to deliver:

center-of-mass energy
instantaneous luminosity
integrated luminosity
pile-up
HL-LHC:
High pile-up:
Experimental challenges
leads to higher rate of fake tracks
increases radiation exposure
soft scattering processes add energy deposits in the
calorimeter that degrade the resolution
increases data volume
Focus on very rare processes and precision
measurements
need to maintain at least current performance for all
physics objects.
Many systems are to be improved
associating particles to primary vertices
improved triggering that uses track information
increase detector acceptance
increase spacial granularity to resolve individual particle
signals
timing measurements for additional discrimination

HL-LHC: Summary
There would be a lot to know from the full HL-LHC dataset
Thanks to the upgrades the experiments must be able to cope with the
challenges of high luminosity
Rare processes can be investigated in much better detail
New challenges lie in theoretical modelling
Improvement expected from advanced analysis methods
Combining the results from the two experiments shows the full
expected reach of the HL-LHC
