DEGREE: BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (SP & FET TEACHING)

SUBJECT : MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY 2A

CODE : HEMEX2A

LECTURER : MR T SCOTT

MODERATOR : MR P BALOYI

ASSESSMENT : THREE

TOTAL MARKS : 100

DUE DATE : 1st JUNE 2023

INSTRUCTIONS:

• Answer all questions and provide detailed workings for each question.
• Type your assignment clearly and accurately using the "insert equation" menu when necessary for
mathematical or scientific notations.
• Ensure that your assignment is submitted in Microsoft Word format (.docx).
• Avoid plagiarism at all costs. Plagiarism is a serious offence and will result in severe consequences.
• Do not copy, and failure to submit equals zero.

Group assignment
• Everyone is expected to participate as it is a group work.
• This group assignment must be uploaded on VUTela strictly by the selected group representatives.
• Use the sample cover page attached to this document on VUTela.

This question paper consists of 3 - typed pages, including the front page.
This assessment weighs 20% of the semester's total mark and is divided into two sections.
Ensure you read and follow all instructions provided. Utilize the MS Word docx attached to
this assignment on VUTela.

Section A: [45]

This section focuses on the topic “Clutch Plate”.

1) Describe in your own words how a clutch operates (4)

2) Name and briefly explain what you understand by the two types of plate clutches (12)

3) Give THREE reasons why proper maintenance of the clutch plate is important (6)

4) What happens if a clutch plate becomes worn or damaged? (3)

5) The maximum torque of a motor car engine is 70 N.m and must be transferred by a plate
clutch that has two friction surfaces and uniform wear. The average axial intensity of
pressure on the clutch is 69 kPa, μ= 0,31 and the outer diameter is 1,01 times the size of
the inner diameter. Calculate the inner and outer diameters of the clutch and the total axial
force necessary. Leave your final answers in the nearest whole number and in millimetres.
(10)

6) A clutch consisting of three plates and six contact surfaces is to transmit 7.5 kW at 700
rev/min. The external and internal radii of each contact surface are 65 mm and 55 mm
respectively. The effective coefficient of friction is 0,19 and the product of the intensity of
pressure and the corresponding radii is a constant. Calculate the axial force and the intensity
of pressure at the internal and external radii respectively. (10)

Section B: [55]

The focus of this section is "Internal Combustion Engine." As part of this assignment, you
are required to conduct thorough research and compose an essay with a minimum length of
THREE (3) pages. It is essential to utilize the provided marking rubric, adhere to the specified
layout, and paraphrase and reference correctly. Do note that any instances of similarities
exceeding 20% will result in a deduction of 50% from your total score, as this exceeds the
university's accepted percentage. To ensure accurate referencing, please refer to the referencing
guide available on VUTela.
