A PROJECT ON READING WRITING AND COUNTING
FOR YOUNG CHILDRENOF PHASE 2 EXT.
MABUHAY CITY

A. INTRODUCTION:
This saying, "A man's first task is his own development," is priceless and still holds
true today. A person must master all the fundamental skills necessary to prepare him for
learning new knowledge, skills, and things in addition to his innate talent and ability. An
individual has to be taught so that he can learn on his own in order to pick up new skills and
knowledge. A person of this era needs to pick up the fundamental abilities early, such as
reading, writing, and counting before he or she enters a regular school. These abilities are
essential.
According to UNICEF report in 2022, Only a third of 10-year-olds globally are
estimated to be able to read and understand a simple written story. The rest around two-thirds
(64%) are unable to cover this marker for minimum proficiency in reading comprehension.

In the reading report of Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metric in 2019, the
Philippines is one of the six countries having low-performing readers. Accordingly, low-
performing children in in the Philippines were only able to “identify relationships between
words and their meanings” in the official language of instruction at Grade 5.

Mary Jane L. Tomas et. Al. stated in their research that the perceived cause of poor
reading skills of Filipinos are:

1. No phonological awareness was observed

2. Non-mastery of alphabet knowledge
3. Non-mastery of phonics
4. Poor word recognition and vocabulary
5. Poor fluency skills
6. Lack of comprehension

D. IMPACT

By teaching the young children the fundamental skills, we are preparing them for the
next step of their learning. These skills are vital for them to learn more new things. Reading,
as a fundamental skill of young people, is the sparks of knowledge and wisdom of an
individual. All competencies that the people needs to learn are gathered through reading. As
we teach reading to an individual, we are teaching him to lead his life, to lead the life of his
family, most of all to lead the life of the community where he belongs.
