Indigenous People: Before and During Pandemic

As the pandemic start in the Philippines, many of us are stressed and others
experienced depression and the worst part, commit suicide. Time goes by, we are
recovering little by little and start again with the new normal. But our fellow
Indigenous People experienced worst than us because we all know that Indigenous
People are isolated and cannot afford to go to health care facilities like clinic or
hospital or even check up because their home is far that the health care personnel
cannot go because of the health protocols and lock downs that happened two years
ago. That is why Indigenous People are calling for better health and basic services.

I discovered on the news article that I read that during pandemic our fellow
Indigenous People experienced not enough supply of clean and potable water in the
Agusan Marsh Community. One of the representatives of the Panaghiusa Alang Sa
Kaugalingnan Ug Kalingkawasan, Inc. (PASAKK) named Becky Barrios said that
even before pandemic fisher folk were already dying from water borne diseases like
stomach ache, vomiting of blood, diarrhea, and difficulty in breathing. She also said
that the research done in their home was right and the water borne diseases are
caused by high levels of mercury and cyanide, causing pollution to the fishes on their
area. This shows that it is important to provide health care systems on our fellow
Indigenous People and the integration of their knowledge and practices are also
need to validate but with the proper way of caring and medications and medicines
nothing else. We always need to remember that we should respect their beliefs but
in terms of medical services, we must give them proper education because life is
what we are talking about here. We cannot afford to lose them because they are part
of us.

In conclusion, although we need to observe our actions when talking about

Indigenous Knowledge and Practices, we need to provide them health care services
and basic services because their knowledge are different from us and they have
different meanings and approaches when someone is not well. That is why we
should interrogate them with health sectors and respect their beliefs and practices at
the same time.
