Baraka Nthathe (JRR Tolkien Book Review By Humphrey Carpenter)

JRR Tolkien's Biography by Humphrey Carpenter is a detailed third person account of

the life of the renowned British author, best known for his fantasy novels, The Hobbit
and The Lord of the Rings.

Tolkien was born in South Africa in 1892, but moved to England with his family at a
young age. He showed an early interest in language and literature, and went on to study
at Oxford University, where he became a professor of Anglo-Saxon and English
language and literature.

During his time at Oxford, Tolkien began working on his own fantasy stories, which
would eventually become the basis for his best sellers (The Hobbit and The Lord of the
Rings). He drew inspiration from his love of language, mythology, the African landscape,
as well as his experiences during World War I, where he served as a signals officer and
witnessed the horrors of the trenches.

Despite facing many setbacks and obstacles, including the loss of his parents at a
young age, Tolkien persevered in his writing, and his books went on to become some of
the most beloved and influential works of literature in the world.

Throughout his life, Tolkien was deeply committed to his family, his faith, and his
academic work, and he remained active and engaged in his writing until his death in
1973.
