ECTIONAL COMMITTEE B18 on Dimensional Standardization of Bolts, Nuts, Rivets, Screws,

S andSimilarFasteners was organizedinMarch,1922undertheprocedure
Standards Association with the Society ofAutomotiveEngineersand
of theAmerican
The American Society of
Mechanical Engineers as joint sponsors.
Subcommittee 10 on the Glossary of Terms for Mechanical Fasteners was organized in Febru-
ary, 1947. The purpose of the subcommittee was to promote and coordinate the standardization of
fastener nomenclature for those products falling under the- scope of the various other subcom-
mittees of the B18 Sectional Committee, the definitions them'selves being the responsibility of the
cognizant subcommittee. It was later decided that terms not strictly in the above category but
closely allied should also be defined in the Glossary.
During the development period, severa1 drafts of the Glossary were prepared and studied by
Subcommittee 10 before a suitable format and content could be agreed upon.
In order to cover completely the field of mechanical fasteners, it has been-necessary to include
in this standard illustrations of certain fastener features and types of fasteners which are of pro-
prietary origin. Since i t was physically impossible to include all variations of such proprietary
designs, the standard includes selected illustrations which exemplify the type of fastener or fea-
ture described. This selection w a s made on an impartial basis and ihe inclusion of any one pro-
prietary design in the standard does not constitute endorsement by the Committee or the sponsors
nor is omission of certain styles to be construed a s rejection of such styles by the committee
and sponsors.
There are some definitions i n this Glossary which are controversial, but since their resolution
could unduly delay issuance of the Glossary, it was decided that the Glossary should be issued
now. However, thesecontroversialdefinitionsaretobeconsideredatanearlydateandthe
Glossaryrevisedasrequired.yheCommitteewillwelcomereceivingsuggestions for improve-
m e n t of the standard.
ASA B18.10 was approved by theB18SectionalCommittee,thesponsors,andtheAmerican
Standards Association, and it was designated as an American Standard on June 22, 1962.

8. RIVETS

8.1 RIVET A rivet is a headed metal fastener of malleable material used to join parts of s t a c t u r e s
and machines by inserting the shank through the aligned holes in each piece and forming a head on
the headless end by upsetting.
8.2 LARGE RIVET A large rivet is a solid rivet having a body diameter of 1/2 inch or more and a
head of one of the following forms: Button, high button, cone, countersunk, or pan (See under 2.2.9.4
page 12). Large rivets are usually driven a t forging heat.
8.3 SMALL RIVET A small rivet is a rivet, usually solid, having a body diameter of less than 1/2
inch and a head of one of the following forms: Button, countersunk, Pat, oval, pufi, ortruss(See under
2.2.9.4 page 12). Small rivers are usually driven cold.
8.4 RIVET HEAD STYLES The many head styles applied to the various types of rivets are illus-
trated and described in 2.2.9.4.

8.5 BELT RIVET A belt rivet is a s m a l l solid

rivethaving a flattop,countersunkhead,and
chamfer point. It is used with a riveting burr for
joining leather.

BELT RIVET

8.6 BLIND RIVET A blind rivet is a rivet designed for use where only one side of the work is ac-
cessible. The rivet shall have a suitable means for expanding or forming the rivet endon the blind
side, which is actuated after the rivet is inserted from the open side. Blind rivets are generally fur
ther categorized by the expanding or forming features such as: Collar, Drive Pin, Explosive, and Pull
Stem. A f e w exampIes of the various types of blind rivets are shown inthe accompanying illustrations.
