1. What is Procter & Gamble’s business strategy? What is the relationship of collaboration
and innovation to that business strategy?

Procter and Gamble’s business strategy is divided into three main units. These are Beauty
Care, Household Care, and Health and Well-Being. Procter and Gamble’s business strategy
focuses on three main ideas. It needs to maintain the popularity of its existing brands via
advertising and marketing. It must extend its brands by developing new products under those
brands and it must also innovate and create new brands entirely from scratch. Collaboration and
innovation are very important, more so in a company such as Proctor and Gamble. Proctor and
Gamble’s business is built around brand creation and management that is why collaboration
between researchers, marketers, and managers is vital. P&G uses distributed development which
allows for the adaptation in a set of tools and practices that fit an organization’s needs.

2. How is P&G using collaboration systems to execute its business model and business
strategy? List and describe the collaboration systems and technologies it is using and the
benefits of each.

P&G has been active in implementing IT that fosters effective collaboration and
innovation. People, Organizations, and Technology work together to create systems solution to
the business’s challenges. These optimizes, develops, and implements solutions for the business.
These solutions result in an increase in efficiency, operational excellence, new products services,
and business models.

3. What problems do collaboration systems solve for P&G?

Information systems collect and disseminates information from an organizations


environment and internal operations to support organizational functions and decision making.

4. Why were some collaborative technologies slow to catch on at P&G?

Getting P&G employees to these newer products such as blogs and other collaborative
tools in place of email has been a struggle. The employees have resisted the changes, insisting
that newer collaborative tools represent more work on top of email.
5. Compare P&G’s old and new processes for writing up and distributing the results of a
research experiment.

Old processes for writing up and distributing the results of a research experiment were
Microsoft Office Applications, print them out and glue them page by page into notebooks. New
and updated processes use Microsoft Innovation Net which contains over 5 million research
related documents in digital format. This is accessible via a browser base portal.

6. Why would telepresence be such a useful collaborative tool for a company like P&G?

Benefits of telepresence include significant travel savings, more efficient flow of ideas,
and quicker decision making. The results were shown in the following ways: Decisions that once
took days now take minutes; the company started saving $4 for every $1 invested in the high-end
telepresence systems.

7. Can you think of other ways P&G could use collaboration to foster innovation?

Some ways that P&G could use collaboration to foster innovation are having a bigger and
more prominent telepresence. This could be where researchers and marketers discuss solutions
and different ideas.
