Problem Set 1
Limit and Continuity
Group Submission:
1. Study each problem carefully.
2. Share your ideas with your group if you do this by group or partner and discuss how to approach each
problem/the best way to solve the problem.
3. Finalize your answer/solution to each problem.
4. Assign a group member to rewrite your final solution for submission.
5. Write your answers and DETAILED solutions legibly (HANDWRITTEN) on a clean bond paper/yellow
paper. Copy the problems first before writing your solutions.
6. Do not just submit a series of steps in a solution. Annotate your work/include comments to explain what
you are doing in each step.
7. Once done, submit your work as either an image or a pdf file to the submission bin in the VLE (main
platform), or if you encounter an unavoidable circumstance, email it to me at rutabornal@up.edu.ph
with the following details.
1. Cc: group members
2. Subject: M53Section PS1: GroupName (ex. M53CD PS1:Mathenik)
3. Message: (Write a short message about your work and close it with your names indicating who
wrote the final work.)
Example:
-Message-
Yours,
Member 1
Member 2
Member 3 (secretary)
4. Attachment: Attach your PS1 file with the filename [M53Section PS1]Groupname
Individual Submission
1. Submit an INDIVIDUAL journal entry as either an image or a pdf file for PS1 in the VLE submission bin
with a filename [M53Section J1]FamilyName. The template is given on the last page of this document.
• Since this may contain personal matters, please submit this separately from the group work.
2. If through email on a case-to-case basis, submit this with the following details:
• Subject: M53Section PS1Journal:FamilyName
• Message: Write a short message (free form).
• Attachment: Your journal entry with the filename [M53Section J1]FamilyName
Problem Set
I. Find the following if the graph of the function 𝑓 is given below. Show complete solution or reason if it is needed.
a.) 𝑓(−8) e.) 𝑓(6) i.) lim 𝑓(𝑥) m. Is 𝑓(𝑥) continuous at 𝑥 = −8? Why or why not?
𝑥→−2
b.) lim+ 𝑓(𝑥) f.) 𝑓(10) j.) lim − 𝑓(𝑥) If it is discontinuous, please determine what type of
𝑥→6 𝑥→−8
c.) lim− 𝑓(𝑥) g.) lim − 𝑓(𝑥) k.) lim − 𝑓(𝑥) discontinuity and explain.
𝑥→6 𝑥→−2 𝑥→−8
d.) lim 𝑓(𝑥) h.) lim + 𝑓(𝑥) l.) lim + 𝑓(𝑥) n. lim 𝑓(𝑥)
𝑥→6 𝑥→−2 𝑥→−8 𝑥→−8
II. Discuss the Intermediate Value Theorem. Give illustrations or examples to expound your discussion.
III. Find the limit of the algebraic functions if it exists. Show your solution analytically.
√3−𝑥 √1+𝑥−√1−𝑥
1.) lim (5𝑥 4 + 3𝑥 3 − 5𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 − 1) 4.) lim + (𝑥+2)2 7.) lim 𝑥
𝑥→3 𝑥→−2 𝑥→0
3𝑥 2 −8𝑥−16 𝑥 2 −16 5
2.) lim 5.)lim 8.) lim−
𝑥→4 2𝑥 2 −9𝑥+4 𝑥→4 𝑥−4 𝑥→3 3−𝑥
𝑥−5 3𝑥+4
3.) lim− |𝑥−5| 6.) lim
𝑥→5 𝑥→+∞ √2𝑥 2 −5
IV. Find the limit of the trigonometric functions if it exists. Show your solution analytically.
𝑥 + 2 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≤ −4
VI. Let 𝑔(𝑥) = { . Sketch the graph of 𝑔 and determine if 𝑔 is continuous at 𝑥 = −4. Find the domain 𝐷𝑔
−𝑥 − 6 𝑖𝑓 − 4 < 𝑥
of the function 𝑔. If it is discontinuous, identify the type of discontinuity and discuss how to remove the discontinuity, if
possible.
VII. Consider the graph of the function 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥)as shown in the following graph.
b. For each value in part 𝑎, state why the formal definition of continuity does not apply.
