Blue H Engineering floating offshore wind expertise and
technology

Since 2004, the Blue H has been the pioneer in developing deep water
floating foundation technology for offshore wind turbines, designed to unlock
the vast potential of offshore wind at an economical cost.

The performed design and engineering we can disclose:

As the first in industry, Blue H developed the floating foundation technology
for offshore wind, and constructed the 560 tons offshore wind TLP and
installed this prototype in 2008 and tested up into 2009, moored in the
Adriatic Sea 113m deep.

The goal was to show the world that floating offshore wind is feasible and to
learn from experiencing the engineering, manufacturing and erection of
turbine at the yard, loading-out, towing-out and installation at sea, of such a
complex structure.

Blue H started then to design a 1,5–2.0 MW TLP (FCU project) with an own
development of an offshore wind turbine. As the market developed rapidly to
larger multi MW offshore wind turbines, this development project was stopped
end of 2010.

During 2010 an extensive R&D study Diwet5, as ordered by the British ETI
(energy technology institute) has been performed. This concept was based
upon an hybrid (concrete–steel) TLP which resulted in an economical and
technical feasible 5MW design, which have been in depth reviewed by the
experts of:

With the result that ETI concluded in 2010 that such a floating foundation
system would reduce the cost price of generated electricity to a level of GBP
105/MWh delivered onshore. This was substantially lower than at that time
achieved by fixed foundation offshore wind farms.

The hybrid concrete–steel Blue H design ETI-Diwet5 with its own two-bladed
wind turbine technology.

Currently, Blue H Engineering developed floating
foundation technology for commercial available offshore
wind turbines for the capacity range of 5–12 MW and
developed an attractive cost effective design with unique
“self-installation” method at sea, delivering lowest
Levelized Cost of Energy for offshore wind power
delivered onshore.

Its generic TLP model for 5MW offshore wind turbine

installed at sea deeper 50 meters, is already a more cost
efficient solution then fixed jacket foundations.

Blue H Engineering floating foundation technology benefits

Innovative cost effective technology

Robust and optimal integrated design for harsh marine environments

generating substantial more energy than possible at shallow water sites
(benefiting from higher and more consistent wind speeds further off-shore)
and best floating stability

Wind turbine assembly at yard (avoiding expensive installation at sea)

Wind turbine pre-commissioned at yard (low onshore cost)

Offshore wind TLP design for efficient serial manufacturing

Transportation by towing out with one AHTS vessel (anchor handling tug and
supply vessel) only

Self-installing process and method

Several cost efficient anchoring methods available depending on the type of

seabed

Easy and low cost decommissioning of wind farm by reversed process.

Environmental attractive technology

No need for seabed preparation works

No hammering and piling

Complete and easy removal of equipment at the end of its life (by reversed
installation process)

Small footprint (minimal use of sea and maximum available area for fishing
industry)

No visual pollution (sites to be positioned much further from shore)

Potential of multiple use of platform (aqua cultures, fish and seaweed

farming)
