3. At a school canteen, 80% of the students (S) purchase chips

(C) and 55% purchase chicken (K). Of the students who
purchase chicken, 11% do not purchase chips.

a) Copy and complete the adjoining Venn diagram to

illustrate this information.
b) Determine the probability that a student at random
purchases ONLY chicken or ONLY chips.

4. Three companies – Abbot, MedTech, and SciLabs – manufacture COVID-19 tests. A hospital must
decide from which company to purchase COVID-19 tests. The probability that Abbot, MedTech,
and SciLabs is chosen is 0.4, 0.25, and 0.35 respectively. The probability that the Abbot test is
accurate is 80%, that MedTech’s is accurate is 75%, and that SciLabs’ is INACCURATE is 10%.

a) Illustrate this information on a tree diagram, showing ALL the probabilities on ALL
branches.
b) Hence, or otherwise, calculate the probability that a COVID-19 test purchased from
MedTech is inaccurate.
c) Calculate the probability that a COVID-19 test is accurate.
d) Calculate the probability that a COVID-19 test is from Abbot, given that it is accurate.
