An issue that has for decades adversely perpetuated itself through the

Jamaican educational system is Gender-based subject selection. “Odd- man

out,” a prose highlights the consequences of students like “Taveon” being an

outlier in that because of their association with subjects not tailored to their sex

they are ridiculed.

The Ministry of Education and Principals of Jamaican high-schools are

targeted because they hold the power. In showing them the injustice that

students such as “Taveon” experience, the main aim is to catalysed a change.

Another target audience is high students both genders (13-18) where they can

attain comfort in understanding that they are not alone.

This piece was formed from three drafts edited thoroughly throughout the

period of a month. An aspect of the piece that the writer expounds upon is the

dialectal variation of the various characters.

This short story will be presented in front of the Minister of education

during a town hall meeting, presented in the assembly of schools and will be

published in the Daily Gleaner.
