Chapter 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter provides the graphical and tabular presentation of the

data gathered, its analysis, and interpretation of the impact of Facebook addiction on

the academic performance of grade 10 students.

Figure 1 shows that 50 respondents or 100% of the total number are using

Facebook. It has been found that all the grade 10 respondents are Facebook users.

Table 1 elaborates that using Facebook excessively has the highest percentage of 60%

of the respondents who use Facebook primarily to communicate with their family and

friends. While 40% (20) use it for entertainment purposes. This means the excessive

use of Facebook to communicate with their family and friends.

Table 2 shows that in the usage of frequency of Facebook usage, respondents declared

that they used Facebook three (3) times or more a day-high percentage of 34% (17)

respondents. Furthermore, there are nine (9) students who use Facebook five times in

one day. This explains that the usage frequency of Facebook usage obsessed three (3)

or more daily.

Table 3 shows that most of the respondents, particularly 34 respondents out of

10 38% have experienced distraction. While the other respondents have also

experienced disruption of sleep and 6% of respondents are exposed to bullying.

Furthermore, 36% of the respondents became obsessed with online chatting which is

36% or 18 respondents. And 10% of respondents claimed their risk. With this, it

suggests that the main effect of excessive use of Facebook accounts is distraction.

Figure 3 reveals that most of the respondents particularly 34 respondents

out of 50 which is 68%uses Facebook for 2-4 hrs., while 10 respondents which is

equivalent to 20% spend time for 5-7hrs in using Facebook. This means that the

majority of the respondents spent more than one hour using Facebook. Which

explains how students use excessive time on their Facebook accounts.

Table 4 based on the data gathered, it shows perceived measures to avoid

Facebook addiction.

Problem - Focused Strategy

The grade 10 students claimed that "house hold chores ", Play Valor ant

", watch TV series", "sleep" and " to "play basketball" are considered ways to avoid

Facebook addiction as it Solution. According to Saigal (2021) she stated that


Problem-Focused Strategies are directed towards reducing or eliminating a stressor or

the cause of a problem. This includes finding our more information about the issue,

learning new skills to manage it, or evaluating the pros and cons of the alternatives.

Alternative Social Media Options

                The grade 10 students claimed that" delete Facebook app, • Communicating

with people though Facebook and finding answers", and; Manage time by using

Facebook app are considered way to distract their self from being addict on Facebook

as its solution. According to McLachlan (September 2021), she stated that there are

several alternative social media platforms available alongside mainstream platforms

like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. However, please note that the landscape of

social media is constantly evolving, and new platforms may have emerged since then.

Isolation

The grade 10 students claimed that "keeping it on secret " is considered

ways to avoid Facebook addiction on its solution. According to Novocaine (May

2019) She demonstrated a review of the effects of perceived social isolation across the

life span, co-authored by Hawkley, loneliness can wreak havoc on an individual’s

physical, mental and cognitive health (Philosophical Transactions of the Royal

Society B, Vol. 370, No. 1669, 2015).

Figure 3 shows the frequency of the participants. Based on the figure above, there

are nine (9) respondents that are 15 years old, while forty-one (41) of respondents

that are 16 years old. The data suggest that most participants are 16 years old,

which has the highest frequency.


Research Respondents

The respondents of the study were the grade 10 students at don Vicente Rama

Memorial National High School.

Table 5 shows above that 44% or twenty-two (22) respondents are male,

while 56% or twenty-eight (28) of respondents are female. The data elaborates that

most of the participants who answered the survey are female, which has a greater

frequency than male.

MODE: 16 is the most frequency occurred


Chapter 5

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary. The conclusions and the

recommendations made as an outgrowth of this study gathering analyzing and

interpreting data.

Summary

The salient findings of the study are as follows:

1. Form the data gathered. It elaborates that using Facebook excessively to

communicate family and friends with the percentage of 60% (30).

2. The findings show that usage of frequency of Facebook usage respondents

declared that they used Facebook three (3) times or more a day-high

percentage of 34% (17).

3.The findings show that most of the respondents spent time on Facebook

which 2-4hrs with the percentage of 68% (34).

4.The most common effects of respondents using Facebook is the distraction

with the percentage of 38% (19).

5.Based on the gathered data, it shows the perceived measures to avoid

Facebook addiction that are divided into 3 themes, such as problem focus-
strategies, alternative social media actions, isolation. Which involves engaging

activities or hobbies and also their privacy.

Conclusion

From the findings of the study, the conclusions deducted:

1.There was a majority number that students used their Facebook to

communicate with family and friends. It means that the student’s usage of

Facebook indents highly for communication purposes only.

2. The Grade 10 students’ respondents declared that they used Facebook more

a day high. This explains that the frequency of Facebook usage obsessed with

an average of 3hours daily.

3. The effects of using Facebook account is distraction that grade 10 students

experienced. It suggests that distraction is the main effect of using Facebook

account excessively

4. The majority of the respondents spent more than hour using Facebook,

which explains how students engage excessive time on their Facebook

account.

5. The grade 10 student’s respondents are avoiding Facebook addiction .It

means that the Facebook is causing to the grade 10 students will bring a lot of

disadvantages that affect people lives


Recommendations

The following are recommendations derived from the output of the study:

1. Student should minimize their use of Facebook on mere unproductive

matters such as boosting their social statuses through boastful unnecessary

posts.

2. Parents should help their child by creating boundaries that support a

healthy use of Facebook, such as setting time limits or times when phones

should not be used

3. It is recommended that teachers should have open communication with their

students about what is appropriate on Facebook, discussing cyberbullying and

other things which can subtly occur while using social media.

4. It is recommended that mindfulness and self-control promote the

individuals to become more aware of their impulses and develop self-control

when it comes to Facebook usage that apply mindfulness techniques can help

individuals better manage their cravings and argues to use social media and

excessively.
