Assignment I

1. A cylindrical tank 3m in length and 1m in diameter contains 2kg of fluid.

Determine the specific volume and density of the fluid.
2. Determine the pressure exerted on a diver at 30 m below the free surface
of the sea. Assume a barometric pressure of 101 kPa and a specific gravity
of 1.03 for seawater.
3. A barometer reads 950mbar at the foot of a mountain. Estimate the height
of the mountain if the barometer reads 785mbar at that point. Take the
average density of air as 1.2 kg/m3 and g=9.81m/s2
4. A vacuum of 680 mm of mercury is read on the arm of manometer where
the local pressure is 97 kPa. Calculate pressure in kPa and mm of Hg.
5. A new temperature scale is proposed. On this scale the ice point of water
is 150D and the steam point is 300D. Determine the equivalent of 100D
and 400D in Celsius and kelvin scale.
6. A Resistance thermometer follows the equation
R=R0(1+a(T-T0))
Where R0 is the resistance in ohms, measured at reference temperature T0
(0C) and “a” is a material constant with units of (0C). The following data
are obtained for a particular resistance thermometer.
T(0C) Resistance in
ohms

Test 1 0 50

Test 2 90 50.4

What resistance reading would correspond to a temperature of 500C on this

thermometer?
7. The hydraulic lift in a car repair shop has an output diameter of 30 cm and
is to lift cars up to 2000 kg. Determine the fluid gage pressure that must
be maintained in the reservoir.
8. A 1m3containers is filled with 0.12 m3 of granite with density of 2750 kg/
m3, 0.15 m3sand with a density of 1500kg/ m3, 0.2 m3Liquid water and the
rest of the volume is air at a density of 1.15kg/m3. Find the average
(overall) specific volume and density.
9. The water in a tank is pressurized by air, and the pressure is measured by
a multi fluid manometer as shown in Figure. Determine the gage pressure
of air in the tank if h1= 0.2 m, h2= 0.3 m, and h3 = 0.4 m. Take the densities
of water, oil, and mercury to be 1000 kg/m3, 850 kg/m3, and 13,600
kg/m3, respectively.

10. A 1m3 container is filled with 0.12 m3 of granite with density of 2750 kg/
m3, 0.15 m3sand with a density of 1500kg/ m3, 0.2 m3Liquid water and the
rest of the volume is air at a density of 1.15kg/ m3
