MECH 331 Fluid Mechanics

Problem Set No. 1

1. A reservoir of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) has a mass of 500 kg and a volume of 0.315
m3. Find the carbon tetrachloride’s (a) weight, (b) mass density, (c) specific weight, and
(d) specific gravity.

2. The weight of a body is 100 lb. Determine (a) its weight in

Newtons, (b) its mass in kilograms, (c) the rate of
acceleration in ft/sec2 if a net force of 50 lb is applied to the 20 in
body.

3. Find the height of the free surface if 0.8 ft3 is poured in the
conical tank shown, 20-in high, with a base radius of 10 in. 10 in

How much additional water is required to fill the tank?

4. Determine the density, specific gravity, and mass of the air in a room whose dimensions
are 4 m x 5 m x 6 m at 100 kPa abs and 25°C. Treat air as an ideal gas.

5. Find the change in volume of 1 ft3 of water at 80°F when subjected to a pressure
increase of 300 psi. Water’s bulk modulus of elasticity at this temperature is 325,000 psi.

6. A cylinder contains 12.5 ft3 of air at 140°F and 40 psia. The air is then compressed to
2.50 ft3. What is the pressure of air at the new volume and the bulk modulus of
elasticity, assuming (a) isothermal conditions, and (b) adiabatic conditions with k = 1.40.

7. A cube weighing 1.1 kN and 250 mm on an edge slides down an incline on a film of oil
μm thick as shown below. Assuming a linear velocity profile in the file, what is the
terminal velocity of the cube? The viscosity of oil is 7 MPa-sec.

8. The viscosity of a fluid is to be measured by a
rotating drum viscometer constructed of two 40-cm
long concentric cylinders as shown below. The outer
diameter of the inner cylinder is 12 cm, and the gap
between the two cylinders is 0.15 cm. The inner
cylinder is rotated at 300 rpm, and the torque is
measured to be 1.8 N-m. Determine the viscosity of
the fluid.

9. A small drop of water at 80°F is in contact with the air, and has a diameter of 0.02 in. If
the pressure within the droplet is 0.082 psi greater than the atmosphere, what is the
value of the surface tension?

10. Two clean parallel glass plates separated by a distance of 1.5 mm are dipped in a bath of
water. How far will water rise due to capillary action, if 𝝈 = 0.073 N/m?

11. A 1-in diameter soap bubble has an internal pressure of 0.0045 psi greater than that of
the outside atmosphere. Compute the surface tension of the
soap-air interface. Note that a soap bubble has two
interfaces with air, an inner and outer surface of nearly the
same radius.

12. A 0.03-in-diameter glass tube is inserted into kerosene at

68°F as shown. The contact angle of kerosene with a glass
surface is 26°. Determine the capillary rise of kerosene in the
tube. Surface tension of kerosene os 0.028 N/m.

13. Find the angle the surface tension film leaves the glass for a vertical tube immersed in
water if the diameter is 0.25 in and the capillary rise is 0.08 in. Use 𝝈 = 0.005 lb/ft.

14. What capillary depression of mercury (𝛳 = 140°) may be expected in a 2-mm diameter
tube?

15. A glass tube in the tank shown is used to measure pressure in

the water tank. The tube has 1 mm diameter. If surface
tension is 0.0712 N/m, what is the true water height in the
tube after correcting for surface tension?
