OUND INFORMATION carefully. may help you answer some of the questions. During the 1930s, Stalin established total personal control over the Soviet Union. The purges removed anyone who was suspected of disloyalty. The secret police arrested and murdered thousands of people. Millions died in famines caused by his policy of collectivisation. Yet many Russians still regarded Stalin {as a great man who was turning the Soviet Union into a powerful, modern state. Was Stalin ust a brutal dictator, or was he a great leader of his country? Source A former manager of a collective farm remembering Stalin in 1967. Source One day, Stal | was in love with that man and | love him stil.
