Xcel Energy shuts down nuclear generator at Prairie

Island after 'unusual event' Memorial Day Weekend
A nuclear generator remains shut down at Xcel Energy's Prairie Island plant after an "unusual
event"noti cation was reported on Saturday.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said around 6:34 p.m., "multiple re alarms in
containment" were not veri ed in 15 minutes, causing the shutdown of one of the two generators
inside the building at 1717 Wakonade Drive.

A spokesperson with Xcel Energy said an external transformer malfunctioned, triggering the
alarm. However, no re was found and no threat was detected from the event.

"The transformer malfunction caused the site’s Unit 2 to automatically shut down. Unit 1
continues to operate normally," the spokesperson said, adding that both units are in stable
condition as of Wednesday.

According to the NRC, the unusual event declaration is the lowest of four emergency
classi cations, as it indicates a "potential reduction in the level of safety at the plant but no threat
to public safety." The other four are detailed from highest to lowest below:

General Emergency: Events are in progress or have occurred which: a) have caused (or shortly
will cause) substantial reactor core damage, with the potential for uncontrolled releases of
radioactive material; or b) involve security events that deny plant staff physical control of the
facility.

Site Area Emergency: Events are in progress or have occurred which have caused (or likely will
cause) major failures of plant functions that protect the public, or involve security events with
intentional damage or malicious acts that could lead to the likely failure of (or prevent effective
access to) equipment needed to protect the public.

Alert: Events are in progress or have occurred which have (or could) substantially degrade the
plant safety; or a security event that could threaten site personnel or damage to site equipment
is in progress.

The Minneapolis-based company said the Unit 2 generator will be back up and running once
"standard procedures" are completed following the event.
