TOPIC/DISCUSSION LEARNING REFLECTIONS

The topic focuses on the familiarization and summarization of lighting terms and fixtures, the functions and
maintenance, corresponding life spans of the bulbs, costs, installation process, efficiency based on color and the
setting, energy consumption, brightness and more.

(Artist and alike)

The integration of art and sustainable design can be applied to lighting and fixtures for ambience, purpose
and energy consumption. For ambience and macrolevel efficiency, the Color Rendering Index (CRI) is a significant
indicator in selecting lighting and fixtures, either ambient or accent lighting, as it indicates the ability of the light
source to reveal the colors of various objects — this factor affects the scene as disregarding this will defeat the
holistic function of the light. On exterior appearance and aesthetics, the kind of installation, bulb and its color make
a whole difference — it may be an exposed warm white Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL), cool white Light-emitting
Diode (LED) downlight or soft white pin light on a track lighting; this can change an interior or exterior conceptual
design. Also, by studying light distribution, beam spread and glare prevention such as adding architectural elements
like variations of baffles can add an artistic twist to industrial design and architectural approaches — the warmer
the light the cozy and welcoming it is as the cooler the projection, the crisp and invigorating it is.

Analyzing and deciding on the best option or variety of light and fixture can maximize the efficiency it is
made for. This is by being informed with the effect of corresponding bulb to a specific area as it should be associated
by identifying the beam spread and light distribution through light ray reflection on space configuration and
dimensions — light source placement and angle orientation. Examples are the inclusion of dimmers, either gradual
or step dimming, to living or private spaces due to its easy light emission adjustment. Another is task lighting,
compared to ambient and accent lighting this can be characterized between the levels as it covers a specific task,
as the name suggests; on the other hand, for higher ceiling such as warehouses and complexes, high-bay lighting
can be considered. Also, as there are numerous variations, labels on bulb packaging indicates all necessary
considerations in shopping for lights — color temperature is dependent on the Kelvin it contains as the higher the
Kelvin, the cooler the light appears.

(Assembler and alike)

Identifying the different and proper installation process and light accessories is significant in maintenance
and life span per intended setting. Dependent to the type of light and fixture, there are also variations in installation
— easily replaceable light bulbs, fixed light wired to ceiling, and track lighting. These are equally important
information as maintenance and convenience should be thought of. In an environment for security and user safety,
Occupancy Sensors are beneficial in elderly homes, outdoor light sources and the like — this is especially beneficial
during the evening as the elders go to the toilet; and can be a good look out for burglars. For glare prevention,
baffles can be fixed with the light sources especially on exposed soffit areas common for coworking or public spaces.
