1. Greatest well-wisher – The Lotus Feet of Sri Guru

“ Sri Sri Gaurahari is especially merciful towards those who are humble-hearted and
incapable”

All glories to Sri Sri Mayapur Chandra

Sri Bhagavat Yantra,

Prachin Navadwip Sri Dhama-Mayapur, Nadia
1st Chaitra 1321
15th March 1915

My notification to you, with great affection, is this –

I received news through your letter dated 9.03.15, full of love and affection. Please chant
Sri Harinama residing at this place. Please read Sri Chaitanya Bhagavat and Sri Chaitanya
Charitamrita. Your letter, characterized by the words arising from your kindness, modesty, and
devotion, is indicative of your generous heart and your service to Lord Sri Hari. Sri Sri Gaurahari
is especially merciful towards those who are humble-hearted and incapable. Many people have
been greatly delighted observing your decent behavior and modesty, your service towards Lord
Sri Hari full of devotion as well as detachment from material objects. I also pray unto the Lotus
Feet of Sriman Mahaprabhu that your enthusiasm in performing service to Sri Hari gradually
grows day by day. And that all of you may be able to make spiritual advancement by continuously
engaging in devotional activities to Lord Sri Hari, as well as being followed and obeyed by all the
world. The devotees here have offered their obeisances unto you. In the future, I will be pleased
to hear that by the Lord’s mercy, you are sincerely chanting the Holy Name of Lord Sri Hari
without any interruption.

Your well-wisher akinchana (having no material possession)

Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.

2. Instructions about archana (Deity-worship) and bhajan (devotional activities) to an

initiated devotee

“Sri Harinama and Sri Hari are the same”

All glories to Sri Chaitanya Chandra

Sri Mayapur, Nadiya

16 Vishnu, 429 Gaurabda
17 March 1915, 3rd Chaitra 1321
I have received your letter. Please always sincerely chant a fixed number of rounds of Sri
Harinama (the Holy Name of Lord Sri Hari) with great enthusiasm. The Guru Mantra is - ***.
Guru Dhyan is - ***. Tilaka Mantra is - ***.

If there is any problem in explicitly marking the body with Hari-Mandir (tilaka or sacred
markings), you can perform it in mind, while chanting the mantras. Please know that Sri
Harinama and Sri Hari are the same. Know for sure that chanting Sri Harinama and directly
meeting Lord Sri Hari are exactly the same. “Sri Harinama Prabhu” is the worshipable object
of the liberated souls.

Please read ‘Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita’, ‘Sri Chaitanya Bhagavat’, ‘Prarthana’,

‘Prema-Bhakti-Chandrika’, ‘Kalyana-Kalpataru’ and other pure Vaishnava scriptures. The
customary rule is to worship Sri Guru first, followed by the worship of Sri Gauranga and then Sri
Krishna. I will inform you about the detailed rules and regulations later. Meanwhile, please keep
chanting the Mantras. While worshipping the Deities, meditate upon Them based on whatever
idea and conception you have. Gradually, by cultivating more and more, your meditation will
become perfect. Please know that the main fruit or result obtained by performing deity-
worship, meditation, and related activities is to be able to chant the Krishna-Nama. I am
doing good, by the mercy of Sri Mahaprabhu.

Your ever-wellwisher, akinchana (having no material possession)

3. The differences between Karma, the fruitive activities, and Jnana, the pursuit of
impersonal knowledge

“Please beg the lotus feet of Sri Rupa Prabhu and all the Rupanuga Prabhus”

All glories to Sri Sri Krishna Chaitanya Chandra

Sri Mayapur, Nadiya

Sri Chaitanyabda 429
My dear –

I have received news through your letter dated 7th Baisakh. We are doing good by the
grace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. However, we are facing numerous hindrances in performing
Hari Seva, service to Sri Hari, as a result of the past sinful activities.

If one has the intense desire to chant Harinama without offenses, one can get rid of the
offenses by sincerely chanting Harinama all the time. Sriman Mahaprabhu has endowed Sri Rupa
Goswami Prabhu with all the potencies. Please beg the lotus feet of Sri Rupa Prabhu and all the
Rupanuga Prabhus, followers of Srila Rupa Goswami Prabhu, from the inner core of your heart
for the mercy that has been transmitted to them by Sriman Mahaprabhu. Especially, please pray
to Sri Harinama Prabhu earnestly, to kindly bestow us with the qualifications required to serve
Him. Then Nama Prabhu will appear as the Nami Prabhu , i.e., the possessor of the Holy Name
and establish Himself in the heart.

The desire to acquire anything except ‘Sri Krishna’ is known as ‘anyabhilasa’. Those who
have any desires unrelated to Krishna are to be considered anyabhilasi. Those interested in
virtuous acts and good deeds are karmis, while those who are interested in the formless,
impersonal philosophy or knowledge are jnanis. The difference of a karmi with anyabhilasi is
that, anyabhilasi is engaged in wrong activities. The difference between a gyani and
an anyabhilasi is that anyabhilasi has wrong or evil thoughts and intentions. Yukta vairagya
(proper renunciation that is pleasing to Krishna) is achieved only when one, having sincere
intention to serve Sri Krishna, becomes completely detached from the desire of mundane sense
gratifications and offers transcendental service to Sri Krishna. On the other hand, by considering
the scriptures, the transcendental form of the Deities, the devotional practice of chanting
Harinama and the Vaishnavas as mere illusory or mundane things, one gets ‘tuccha vairagya’
(improper renunciation, renunciation that is not pleasing to Krishna), which must be abandoned
by a devotee. The devotees of the Lord will only accept Yukta Vairagya. “Krame krame paya
loke bhava sindhu kula”. Please try to properly realize this instruction of Sriman Mahaprabhu.

Your ever well-wisher

akinchana (having no material possession) Sri Siddhanta Saraswati

4. Chanting and singing the Holy Name with Samvandha Jnana (the proper knowledge
of one’s relationship with the Supreme Lord)

Subhasisang rashayah santu -

I received news through your letter dated 28th Baisakh. A few days ago, I became very
concerned regarding Sriman A***. Despite not receiving any news from him, I could well
understand that he is lacking interest in chanting the Holy Name and in devotional service. All
these are indeed my misfortune. We wish to enhance our pleasure by observing the ideal
character of a devotee, always inclined towards chanting and serving the Holy Name. I wish to
see that character in a capable person as Sriman A*** and thereby consider all of you to be very
fortunate. But unfortunately, Sriman A*** himself is suffering from trouble in the mind and is
disinterested in chanting the Holy Name! At this point in time, if you can bring Sriman *** to
Mayapur, then, I think he will be relieved of his agitation of mind and related distractions. If
Sriman A***’s mother has a strong objection to sending him here, then he can also return with
*** (another devotee), or can stay a few more days here and return to his home after his mental
distress gets alleviated. You can try to explain the issue to Sriman A***, Sriman B*** and
A***’s mother to see if they cen be convinced.

Please regularly read ‘Prarthana’, ‘Sri Prema-Bhakti-Chandrika’, ‘Sri Upadeshamrita’,

‘Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita’ with utmost attention and faith. Please do not discuss the topics of
Sri Hari with materialists and impersonalists. Give up all mundane association and please
regularly chant a fixed number of Harinama without offense. If you chant the Holy Name of
Sri Hari, remaining fixed in the knowledge of your original relationship with the Supreme
Lord, no materialistic person can cause you any harm. Without chanting the Holy Name, there is
no way to bring auspiciousness in one’s life. Sri Nama (the Holy Name) is Himself the
Supreme Lord; only with material eyes does the Holy Name of the Lord appear different
from His own Self. The liberated souls know that the Holy Name is non-different from the
Lord. We are doing fine, by Mahaprabhu’s mercy.

Your ever-wellwisher
Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.

5. Sri Gaurasundar and Sri Krishnasundar

“The mercy of Gaurasundar is unlimited and the sweetness of Krishnachandra is unparalleled”

Jay Jay Gaura (All glories, All glories to Gaura)

17th Sravana, 1322
2nd August 1915

Subhasisang rashayah santu vishesah: -

I have received your letter dated 5th Sravana. I believe, by this time, you should have
received the last letter I wrote to your home address. Being occupied with different services, I get
late in writing timely replies to the letters, which is a short-coming. Mahaprabhu and Radha
Krishna are the same and are non-different. The only distinction is that Sri Gaurahari
is vipralambha rasa vigraha, the personification of the mellow of ecstatic love in separation,
searching for Krishna and Sri Radha-Krishna is sambhoga rasa vigraha, the personification of
the mellow of amorous conjugal love . By accepting Sri Gaurahari as one’s Master and serving
Him in the mood of His maidservant, one can attain Vraja. In the 20th Chapter of Anta-Lila of Sri
Chaitanya Charitamrita, the process of bhajana (devotional practice), as demonstrated by
Mahaprabhu, has been mentioned. The mercy of Gaurasundar is unlimited and the sweetness of
Krishnachandra is unparalleled. Therefore, Gaura is addressed as Audarya Vigraha, the
personification of munificence and Krishna is addressed as Madhurya Vigraha, the
personification of sweetness. Please know for sure that there is no possibility of making any
comparison between the two forms. Taking refuge unto the Lotus Feet of Gaura and performing
service unto Lord Sri Krishna are the same thing. Both of the forms are extremely charming.
Lord Gaurahari is the combined manifestation of Sri Radha and Sri Krishna and hence He is
neither less nor more than Krishna. Something cannot be considered either more or less with
respect to its own self. The living entities are greatly benefitted by chanting the Krishna Nama.
Sri Nama (the Holy Name of the Lord) and Sri Nami (the Possessor of the Holy Name) i.e., the
Lord and His Name are the same and non-different. Please attentively read Sri Chaitanya
Charitamrita. Thakura Mahasaya (Srila Narottama Dasa Thakura) has written, - “Gora pahu na
bhajiya mainu / Adhane jatana kari dhana teyaginu1 ” Keeping all these prayers in your heart,
please always chant the Holy Name of Krishna. Then, no material trouble will be able to cause
any harm to you.

Your ever wellwisher

Sri Siddhanta Saraswati

( FOOTNOTE: 1 “I spoiled my entire life and embraced suffering by not worshiping my master

6. Ways to get rid of Anarthas, the unfavorable and unwanted habits

“If one has a strong desire to proceed on the path of service and responsibilities, then no
obstacles can do any harm”

All glories to Sri Sri Krishna Chaitanya Chandra

Sri Mayapur Vrajapattan

24th Bhadra, 1322

My dear –

I received your last letter dated 15th Sridhara, full of love and affection, in due time.
However, being occupied with different services, I could not reply to your letter timely.
A soul who does not perform Haribhajan, sincere devotional service towards Lord Sri Hari,
becomes a jnani, mental speculator, a karmi, materialistic person, or anyabhilasi, one who has
worldly desires. Hence, please always pray to Sri Bhagavan by chanting the Hare
Krishna Mahamantra. By loudly chanting a fixed number of Krishna Nama with great
attachment, one can get rid of anarthas, unfavorable and unwanted habits. In this way, the
materialistic thoughts and similar foolishness will run away and mundane people who are averse
to Lord Sri Hari cannot mock or ridicule. Getting association of shastras, the revealed scriptures,
is very auspicious. Later, to understand more about bhajan, one can associate with sadhus,
saintly persons, individually. One adhering to the chanting of Harinama without aparadhas,
offenses, will surely attain all siddhis, spiritual perfection, very easily. The materialistic persons
cannot do harm to anyone then.

Once the third edition of Sajjana Toshani gets published, I will send it to you as soon as
possible. Please read that magazine very carefully. Also, you can consider reading and discussing
‘Jaiva Dharma’ if you get enough time…
Common men will always be speaking gramyakatha, ordinary and mundane talks, please
be indifferent towards those. If one has a strong desire to proceed on the path of service and
responsibilities, then no obstacles can do any harm. Please read and discuss ‘Kalyana-
Kalpataru’, ‘Prarthana’, ‘Prema-Bhakti-Chandrika’ and other scriptural texts whenever you
have spare time. Please give proper respect externally even to the materialistic and worldly
persons, but, you should be devoid of any sort of internal affection and appreciation towards
them while dealing with such persons. Internally, you should develop a feeling of detachment
towards them in your mind.

Everything is fine here. Please inform me about your spiritual well-being.

Your ever wellwisher

Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.

7. Realisation of the Knowledge (Truth) of Gaura and Krishna by the impact of

chanting the Holy Name

Sri Krishnachandra”

All glories to Sri Chaitanya Chandra

26th Bhadra 1322
12th September 1915

Dear (object of affection),

Subhasisang rashayah santu vishesah: -

I have received news through your letters dated 09.08.15 and 14.05.22. I have already
given my instructions to send you the ‘Sajjana Toshani’ magazine in due course of time. Please
read the magazine. I will also give my instructions to send the magazine to Sri *** as well.
During Chaturmasya, in the month of Aswin, one should abandon milk and in the month of
Kartik, one should refrain from accepting black gram, spinach, betel leaves, and all other non-
vegetarian foods. The devotees of Lord Sri Hari never accept non-vegetarian food items like
meat, fish, eggs etc. There are strict rules and regulations regarding the observance
of Chaturmasya Vrata – all of which are primarily aimed at facilitating service to Lord Sri Hari.
We will discuss all these topics gradually in ‘Sajjana Toshani’. If one has less taste for
chanting Harinama, then, by regularly chanting Harinama attentively, abiding by the rules
and regulations, one achieves the realization that the Holy Name and its possessor – Sri
Gaura Krishna are one and the same.
One should first worship Sri Guru, then Sri Gaura, followed by Sri Krishna. Please
attentively chant a fixed number of rounds of Harinama daily. Sri Gaurahari and Sri Radha
Krishna are the same. There is absolutely no difference between these two forms. Gaura is
Krishna Himself. When you gradually get introduced to Them properly, or familiarize yourself
with Them, They will help you to fully realize this concept. Here everyone is doing well. Please
inform us about your spiritual well-being from time-to-time. There is no comparison to the grace
of Sri Gaura Sundar; there is no limit to the sweetness of Sri Krishnachandra.

Your ever-wellwisher
Sri Siddhanta Saraswati

8. Assessment of Chitta-vikshep, distractions of the mind, and Seva-Aparadhas, offenses

in the course of serving Krishna

“Even if material thoughts arise during the process of chanting the Holy Name, please do not
allow any slackness in chanting”

All glories to Sri Sri Krishna Chaitanya Chandra

Sri Mayapur,
15th Padmanabha, 429 Sri Gaurabda

Dearest –

I have received your letter dated 5th Padmanabha. Expecting that writing an extensive
letter in reply would take quite a bit of time, this letter has been delayed and so now, I am writing
briefly. I was very glad to know that you have come to the realisation that chanting Sri Krishna
Nama, the Holy Name of Krishna, with eagerness and perseverance invokes all auspiciousness.
Even if material thoughts arise during the process of chanting the Holy Name, please do not
allow any slackness in chanting. As a secondary consequence of chanting the holy Name,
gradually such useless thoughts will be eliminated, in regards to this, you do not need to be
concerned or troubled. This result cannot be expected in the beginning. But when one
experiences great pleasure by chanting the Name of Sri Krishna, the temptation of material
thoughts will eventually be reduced. Without having extreme eagerness and attachment towards
the Holy Name of Krishna, how can one expect to get rid of the material thoughts?

Foreign sugar or mixed ghee is impure. Our native refined sugar and unadulterated ghee
are pure. Both pure and impure things are just material substances. Be it pure or impure, if one
does not offer it to the Supreme Lord with a feeling of love from the heart, the Lord does not
accept anything. Hence, while performing services, it is necessary to ensure that we are not
committing any Seva-aparadha, offenses. By carefully serving the Holy Name with one’s body,
mind and words, the all-auspicious form of Sri Nami, i.e, Sri Krishna, the possessor of the Holy
Name, becomes revealed before us.

I hope your devotional practices are going on nicely.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sri Siddhanta Saraswati

9. Advices to Nama-bhajan-kari, the worshipper of the Holy Name and Archaka, the
worshipper of the Deities

“One cannot serve Sri Bhagavan with impure consciousness”

All glories to Sri Sri Krishna Chaitanya Chandra

Sri DhamaMayapur, Nadiya,

4th Damodara, Sri Chaitanyabda 429

Dearest –

Subhasishang rashayah santu visesah

I have received news through your letter dated 2nd Damodara. I am extremely glad to
know that your eagerness for chanting Sri Nama, the Holy Name, has increased. By chanting the
Holy Name repeatedly, anarthas, the unfavorable and unwanted habits, will be removed and
the Rupa, transcendental form, Guna, transcendental qualities and Lila, transcendental pastimes
of the Supreme Lord will be spontaneously revealed through the Holy Name itself. So, there is
absolutely no need of trying for separate remembrance of the Rupa, Guna, and Lila of the
Supreme Lord in an artificial manner.

Sri Nama and Nami, the Holy Name and its Possessor, are non-different. We can
achieve this special realization only when our anarthas are eliminated. When Krishna-Nama will
be uttered without aparadhas, offenses, you yourself will arrive at the understanding that all
perfections are achieved just from this Holy Name.

One who chants the Holy Name can perceive that the gross and subtle body gradually
become indistinct, and in course of time, one’s own siddha-rupa, the internal spiritual form, is
revealed. When ons’s siddha-svarupa, own spiritual form, appears by continuing to chant again
and again, one can then perceive the transcendental form of Sri Krishna through one’s own eyes.
Revealing the siddha-svarupa of jivas, the living entities, Sri Nama, the Holy Name, Himself
pulls their minds towards the transcendental form of Sri Krishna. Revealing svaguna, the internal
spiritual qualities of the living entities, Sri Nama Himself attracts them towards the
transcendental qualities of Sri Krishna. And Sri Nama Himself, awakening svakriya, the spiritual
activities of the living entities, attracts them towards the transcendental pastimes of Sri Krishna.
The word ‘Nama-seva’, service to the Holy Name of the Lord, also inherently includes all other
necessary devotional practices of the person who is chanting the Holy Name. Such dedicated
service, surrendering your body, mind, and speech to the Holy Name, will arise spontaneously in
the field of your heart. One who chants will automatically be able to realize what an
extraordinary transcendental object the Holy Name is. One will also realize all the discussions
and conclusions associated with this topic. The actual form of the Holy Name becomes revealed
through repeated hearing and reading of spiritual topics from the scriptures and associated
devotional practices. There is no need to write any further on this, because, through the chanting
of the holy Name, everything will automatically be revealed.

It is true that in this realm pure and impure substances are material. We will have to
abandon impure things in relation to performing service to Sri Bhagavan, the Supreme Lord. The
material mode of Sattva Guna, the superlative mode or quality of goodness, is considered pure in
this realm, whereas the modes consisting of Rajah and Tamah Gunas (the lower qualities of
passion and ignorance) are to be considered impure. Accepting Sattva-Guna, we will have to
avoid the modes of Rajah and Tamah Gunas. By absorbing or residing in Visuddha Sattva (the
spiritual nature) and realizing that this Visuddha Sattva Guna is pure spiritual substance, we will
have to serve Sri Hari with only those components which possess this spiritual quality. One
cannot serve Sri Bhagavan with impure consciousness i.e., through substances created from
Rajah and Tamah Gunas. Again, unless and until a pure substance does not attain
its Nirguna form, the form devoid of any material qualities, it is not accepted by the Supreme
Lord. This depends on the faculties of the mind and the mood of the heart of the worshiper. It is
absolutely mandatory to determine the purity of the substances. However, once the
transcendental consciousness arises, then one will cease to determine the purity and impurity of
the material modes of nature and will get absorbed in the transcendental Viveka (conscience).

Everything is fine here. Please enhance our happiness by informing about your spiritual
well-being from time to time. Srimad Bhaktivilas Thakur Mahasay is doing well. We are grateful
to occasionally receive news of his devotional life and practises…

Please carefully read ‘Sri Sajjana Toshani’.

Your ever well-wisher

My dear –

Please accept my blessings full of love and affection. Please carefully and attentively read
‘Sajjana Toshani’. Simply by reading more and more about Sri Bhagavan, the Supreme Lord,
and His devotees, all our deficits and imperfections will go away. Without getting restless for the
immediate results, please keep chanting Harinama regularly, with patience and tolerance. Then,
certainly, Sri Bhagavan also will not sit silently. Sri Gaurahari bestows auspicious results based
on the degree of one’s sadhana, devotional endeavors. Serving Lord Sri Hari is termed as Bhakti,
loving devotional service. You will be able to realize that bhakti is nothing but chanting the Holy
Name of Krishna. I have come to know that Sriman *** and *** are doing well in their own
houses. You can start to chant Krishna Nama after touching the japmala (the chanting beads) to
the Lotus Feet of Sri Gaurasundar within your mind. I am doing so so.

Your ever well-wisher akinchana (having no material possession)

Bengali Calendar - 11th Poush, 1322

Dearest –

I have received both of your letters dated 27th Damodara and 27th Keshava in due
time…However, I have not been able to respond to the letter(s) until now…

Regarding the definition of the words ‘pavitra’, pure, and ‘apavitra’, impure, whatever
the karmis consider as pure, may not seem pure enough to the devotees and again, the things
termed impure in the consideration of the karmis, may be regarded as pure by the devotees. (So,
Srila Prabhupad here hints at the common confusion arising with the words pure and impure). If
the word ‘apavitra’ implies filthy, unclean or unfit, such things can never be offered by anyone
to the Supreme Lord. Only sattvik objects, i.e., objects possessing the superlative mode or quality
of goodness, neither rajasik nor tamasik, i.e., objects possessing the lower qualities of passion
and ignorance, can be offered to Sri Bhagavan, the Supreme Lord. If one offers impure things to
Sri Bhagavan, He never accepts those things. One should never accept anything impure, even if
someone else claims that it has been offered to the Supreme Lord. This is because a devotee
never accepts something knowing that it has not been accepted by the Supreme Lord. There is no
offense to not accept such things. Even if a pure, sattvik, object is known to be offered to the
Supreme Lord by a non-devotee, that should be abandoned by a devotee, knowing that the Lord
has not actually accepted it. Sri Bhagavan, the Supreme Lord, does not accept any offering
from those who do not chant the holy Name of the Lord one lakh times daily. Be it pure or
impure, a thing which is meant for sense gratification by those, averse to devotion, is absolutely
mundane. The devotees understand that when a pure object is offered to the Supreme Lord, it
becomes transcendental. That object is no more considered fit for the sense gratification of the
conditioned souls, rather, it is to be honored and regarded as the remnants of the Supreme Lord.
The impure objects can be fit for acceptance by anyone except the Lord – other people, devas,
demigods, or rakshas, demons. That is mundane and impure.

The devotees observe upavas, fasting, on the day of Sri Ekadashi, the 11th day of the
lunar fortnight) by not accepting Sri Mahaprasada or Sri Mahamahaprasada, the remnants of
the Lord. This is because acceptance of some Prasada leads to the breaking of the fast, which
means not showing proper respect to the Harivasara day, the day of, or, dearmost to Lord Sri
Hari. But someone incapable of fasting can take some anukalpa, non-grain small meals– which
does not go against the principle of honoring this day.

I have received your letter dated 13th Phalgun. By Mahaprabhu’s desire, if you can
reach Mayapur during the appearance day celebration of Mahaprabhu, I believe, He Himself will
arrange for a reliable person, whom you can accompany while returning. Sriman *** has sent me
letters after reaching Kolkata. Perhaps, he will arrive here during the festival. Every devotee
should at least try to get darshan of Mahaprabhu once a year. During Mahaprabhu’s manifested

I have received your Bengali New Year’s Card and the letter dated 19th Baisakh in due
time. But I have not been able to reply timely, due to several disturbances. Please read and
understand “Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita” and chant Harinama without any offenses. ‘Sadashiva’
refers to the incarnation of Mahavishnu. There is a difference between Rudra and Sadashiva.
There is no need to read the text, ‘Bhakti Chaitanya Chandrika’. Those, who worship five types
of demigods as well as God, cannot be considered ‘Vaishnava’. The non-devotees consider the
demigods to be equal to the Supreme Lord – Therefore, they are not Vaishnavas, they
are Mayavadis. The Supreme Lord is one without a second, but, demigods are many. Demigods
like Kali, Durga, Ganesh are worshipped by the non-devotees as independent Supreme
Controller. That’s why they are non-Vaishnavas. Sri Gita provides the evidence for this. It is
offensive to call the non-Vaishnavas as Vaishnavas… Thinking that anyone and everyone is a
Vaishnava is an offense as well. The other demigods are not to be offered obeisances to or
worshipped as independent Supreme Lords. However, there is no flaw in honoring the eternal
form of the demigods as the servants of the Supreme Lord. Those who call the non-
Vaishnavas as Vaishnavas and worship demigods considering them as independent entities, do
not have sincerity and one-pointedness in devotion, and hence cannot be termed as devotees.
Giving up such bad association within your mind, please concentrate on reading
‘Upadeshamrita’. Then Krishna will certainly bestow auspiciousness unto you. Those, who
cultivate five-fold or mixed religious principles, cannot serve Sri Bhagavan. Please inform us
about your spiritual well-being.

beginning of the month of Ashadh. Yesterday, Sriman *** arrived here and will be returning to
Kolkata today. His mental state is not well. Solely by serving Sri Hari-Guru-Vaishnavas, the
Supreme Lord, the spiritual master and the pure devotees, always, can a living entity get
rid of the material existence, or else, one will be devoured by the objects of material
enjoyments. Please always chant Harinama with the utmost faith. Please regularly read the texts

realize that Bhagavan is supremely merciful. He will surely bestow His mercy upon you one day.

I have received your letter dated 21st Aswin. Please accept my blessings of Vijaya. Due to
lack of time, my reply gets delayed. Sri Krishna mercifully forgives all such short-comings.
Please do not call *** Sriman as Brahmachari any more. *** has fallen down. Thinking oneself
as independent, when a living entity commits an offense at the lotus feet of Sri Sri Krishna, then
one falls down to such a miserable condition. Please continuously and uninterruptedly chant the
Holy Name of Krishna. Please study the devotional scriptures without offense. Numerous people
may be satisfied and motivated by observing your ideal lifestyles. *** has fallen into the clutches

In his next births, he will certainly be benefitted. But in this life, I do not find any further chance
of his spiritual advancement. He has left our association in a rather harsh manner. But please do
not get scared by observing his misfortune. I know that foolish people might criticize us
regarding this incident. Nevertheless, I hope you are chanting Sri Sri Harinama without any fear

With affection and good wishes –

I have received both of your letters dated 13th Kartik and 13th Agrahayan in due time.
There is no need to write letters to ***. Please, by all means, refrain from associating with
the Mayavadis, impersonalists, the mundane Shakta sampradayas, followers of Shakti, and
the karmis, materialistic persons or non-devotees. When a devotee is born, the forefathers of
that family are especially benefitted and they become liberated. There is no need to separately
pray for the forefathers. There is absolutely no necessity to have darshan of the Lotus Feet of
Sri Vishnu with the mood of performing fruitive activities and the motive of attaining
material enjoyment. Verses from Srimad Bhagavatam like “…vaitanike mahati karmani
yujyamanah1 ” have rejected such external shows of ritualistic ceremonies.
Please do not get engaged in such activities. There has been a delay of a few days in
publishing the magazine… Please earnestly pray to the Holy Name, as a result of which, the
Holy Name will bestow His mercy. The devotees here are doing well. Please enhance our
happiness by informing us about your spiritual well-being from time-to-time.

Your ever well-wisher

(FOOTNOTE: 1 “Those who are bewildered by the illusory energy of the Lord cannot
understand the transcendental value of performing devotional services because their minds are
attached to the fruitive activities of the Vedas. Their intelligence has become dull and hence,
they are busy collecting ingredients of ritualistic ceremonies which only yield temporary material
benefits” – Srimad Bhagavatam – 6.3.25)

I have previously received 2-3 letters from you. However, due to the lack of devotees
being available for writing the letters physically, and myself being occupied with different
services, it was not possible to timely reply to the letters. ‘Sri Krishna Chaitanya Sahasranama’
was not sent earlier, anyway I am sending it now. The 5th edition of Sri Sajjana Toshani has not
been published yet. I have heard that *** has arrived in Kolkata. Soon enough, *** will return to
his residence. The miserable condition of *** is the consequence of his past sinful activities. We
are sorry about that. “Sva-karma-phala-bhuk puman” (everyone is subjected to enjoying or
suffering the fruits of his own activities), so in the next births, he will be benefitted. Please
refrain from bad association within your mind and chant Harinama without offense. Please
regularly study the scripture, ‘Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita’. Everything is fine here. It has been
settled that, soon, deity worship will be started in Vrajapattan (Mayapur).

I have received your card yesterday. I learned that you have reached Bangaon. It has been
2-3 days that Sriman *** has gone to Kolkata for a service. It has been decided that I will go to
Sri Mayapur after he returns... Sri Gaurasundar tests us in various ways, by putting us in trouble
and giving us different types of association. It depends on the fortune of the living entity,
whether one can succeed in passing the tests or not. Sri Gaurahari, by bestowing His mercy, has
revealed the eternal truth in the heart of the living entities as the Antaryami, the indwelling
Supersoul. Those, who have taken shelter at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari and the spiritual
master without any duplicity or ulterior motives, never find any sraddha, trust or faith, arising in
the illusory words of misguided people. The unfortunate living entities are deluded by hearing
such deceitful words. Please read Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita regularly and hear its undistorted
explanations from the real, knowledgeable and realized Vaishnavas… Our only refuge is the
Lotus Feet of Sri Mahaprabhu.

I have received your lengthy letter. I was extremely occupied with services during
the Utsava (festival or celebration). I was always engaged in speaking and listening to Harikatha,
discussions on topics of Sri Hari. Even you could hear them as well. If you had something to ask,
then, you could have asked when there was a smaller crowd. I never get irritated or displeased
with anyone; so there is no reason for me getting displeased with you. You left for Kolkata
hurriedly. I did not obstruct or forbid, as I thought you might have some urgency. You were
staying here at a great expense and withstanding so many troubles. So, I did not have any
objection regarding that. Please serve Sri Harinama with great faith. Then everything will be
fulfilled and successful. Please bless us so that we can chant the Holy Name without offenses.

Subhasisang rashaya santu viseshah :-

I have received news through your letter dated 4th Baisakh. Residing at the lotus feet of
Sriman Mahaprabhu, I have started some work on Srimad Bhagavatam. Today also, I did not go
to Krishnanagar. At the end of this month, I will go to Daulatpur Prapannashram. It has been
decided that I will give spiritual discourses on ‘Sri Sanatan Siksha’ and ‘Sri Bhakti-rasamrita-
sindhu’ there. **

** Prabhu is doing well and is engaged in performing Haribhajan. I am very glad to

learn that you are performing Haribhajan with relatively less disturbances and impediments.
Please enhance our delight by regularly chanting the Holy Name devoid of any offenses. If
Sriman Mahaprabhu desires, we will receive your darshan. I will give them my instructions to
send you the eighth and ninth edition of ‘Sajjana Toshani’. I often remember your gentle,
pleasing and charming appearance. Please make us happy by informing us about news of your
well-being from time to time.

I have received your letter a few days back. Today, Lord Jagannath Deva’s Rathyatra
was celebrated. Therefore, we will be leaving in one or two days from here. For several days, we
stayed in the association of different types of devotees. Hence, gradually we are realizing the
insignificance and trivialness of this material world more and more. You all please, out of your
compassion, grant me the capability to perform devotional practice in the association of wise
people. Also please perform Haribhajan, devotional service to Sri Hari, sincerely and peacefully
in your respective houses without interruption. I have heard that you have been tormented by
***. Well, “Sva-karma-phala-bhuk puman” (everyone is subjected to enjoying or suffering the
fruits of his own activities) – Knowing this, we remain calm and positive, irrespective of the
circumstances. This time we took darshan of Alalnath, Sakshi Gopal and different other holy

all doing well. I hope you are chanting Harinama without offenses.

Subhasisang rashayah santu vishesah: -

I received news through your letter full of affection, dated 5th Bhadra. I had gone to Sri
Mayapur via Kolkata and Krishnanagar… Please repeatedly read the magazine ‘Sri Sajjana
Toshani’ with great care and attention. By reading it again and again, you will be able to grasp
the content… It is better not to talk about those who are averse to Lord Hari. By chanting
Krishna Nama, all bad association will automatically be removed like fog during the
day. Mayavadis, impersonalists, karmis, those inclined to fruitive activities, jnanis, those
inclined to liberation, and anyabhilashis, mundane people with materialistic desires, are bad
association. Day by day, the impersonalists have started introducing themselves as ‘Vaishnavas’.
Previously, some foolish wretched and characterless people used to call themselves
‘Vaishnavas’. But now, a few mayavadis have also started advertising themselves as
‘Vaishnavas’. If we can drive those mayavadis away, following the orders of Srila Svarupa
Damodar Goswami, and engage in chanting Harinama, in the absence of bad association, then
Gaurahari will bestow His mercy upon us.

I have received the news that you have reached home. I am still staying here. I suppose,
soon, I will be travelling to Ghatal in Medinipur district to preach the glories of the Holy Name. I
am pleased to know that Sriyukta Kunja babu has taken good care of you all. Please always chant
the Holy Name of Sri Hari while residing in your house. This will bestow utmost auspiciousness
unto you. Please convey my blessings to Sriman Vinodvihari. Please attentively discuss Sri
Chaitanya Charitamrita with your paternal aunt. Please read and try to get absorbed in the
content of “Sri Sajjana Toshani”. Here, a pond is being dug near the house of Sriman
Mahaprabhu. Even though there is a lack of discourses in your land on the topics of Sri Krishna
bhakti, all of you please enthusiastically discuss about these. Please let me know about your
spiritual well-being from time to time. Please study “Jaiva Dharma” and other scriptural texts.

Sri Chaitanya Matha,

19th Ashadh, 1326
4th July, 1919

With affection and good wishes –

I have received your letter dated 12th Ashadh. I went to Jessore, Khulna, Lohagora,
Purulia and different other places for preaching the glories of the Holy Name, with 10-15
devotees accompanying me. Besides the regular devotees, a few other people were residing in
the (Bhaktivinoda) Asana in Kolkata. The disappearance day of Srimad Bhaktivinoda Thakura
and Krishnadas Babaji Mahasaya have also been celebrated. I will be residing here for 4-5 more
days and can later visit Kolkata as well…

Sriman Mahaprabhu does not appear in this material world every Kali-yuga. Hence, He is
not just the ‘Yuga-avatara’ (Incarnation of the age). The verse ‘kam Krishna karmarpane1’ from
‘Prema Bhakti Chandrika’ is indeed correct, i.e., it indicates that I will engage my lust or desires
in eagerness to serve Krishna. The verses ‘Yatkarosi2’ etc from Srimad Bhagavad-gita are
indicative of karma-misra bhakti , devotion mixed with fruitive inclination, and does not imply
exactly the same as the ‘kam Krishna karmarpane’. The enjoyer of fruitive activities is the living
entity, and unalloyed, pure devotion is about engaging all activities, and all efforts for the loving
service of Lord Sri Hari. We are doing good.

Your ever well-wisher

My dearest –

I have received your letter dated 12th Aswin. Earlier, I have received the Anukulya
(financial support, favor or donation) sent by you for the appearance day celebration of Srila
Bhaktivinoda Thakura. After residing for a paksha, one fortnight, in Mayapur, I have returned to
Sri Asana last Friday via Krishnanagar. Shortly, I will have to march to Purva Banga (East
Bengal) on the day of Bijaya Dashami for preaching purposes. The rule of Urja Vrata is that,
accepting non-vegetarian food, including mashakalai dal (black gram), betel-nut, yard-long
beans, broad beans, is strictly prohibited. There should not be any exception in observing the
rules and fulfilling the vow of chanting the Holy Name as well as practicing other devotional
activities. The usual custom is to offer sacred food items - havisya (boiled rice with
ghee), medhya (which are pure and eligible for offering) to Sri Bhagavan, the Supreme Lord, and
then accept the remnants; to abstain from excessive sleep, idleness and misconducts which are
inappropriate for Vaishnavas (devotees) as well as to quit activities like shaving and to perform
self-restraining activities and rituals including Nitya-snana (taking daily shower or bath) etc. by
all means. The adverse sampradaya , community, is now a little quiet. They must be engaged in
their own subject matters. Srimad Bhaktivilas Thakur is now better than earlier. I personally
went to see him. One senior devotee is serving him. Everything is fine here.

devoted and religious-minded friends and associates. If you can reach Sri Mayapur by the
evening of 16th Phalgun, Saturday, then your parikrama can start right from the 17th.

Please let us know about the news of your arrival before 16th Phalgun. Please do not
leave any stone unturned to try to collect a few khol-kartals (mridanga and cymbals), Ram-
Sringa (special musical air horns), Nishan (Flag) as well as some devotees. It has been decided
that a grand celebration will be held on 17th Phalgun in Sri Chaitanya Matha . Please also try to

Yesterday, I received your letter dated 13th Trivikrama. You will be disappointed to know
that Sriman *** has departed for Mumbai via the train scheduled at 2 PM last Tuesday, thereby
leaving Sri Bhaktivinoda Asana, without informing us. Soon, we are supposed to travel to
Baharamganj village of Faridpur district to preach the glories of the Holy Name. However, both
the body and mind are incapable . I am not sure if I can go.

It is the duty of the householders to worship the Deity with faith. The householders who
sincerely take the shelter of the Holy Name, possessing full realization of their relationship with
the Supreme Lord, also adores and appreciates the Deity-worshipers. Those who, despite being a
householder, do not worship the deity in order to save money, incur vitta-sathya (the sin of being
a miser). Deity worship is extremely essential particularly for the ill-natured and restless
householders.

I have received news through your letter dated 10th Aswin. My health is much better now
than it was earlier. You were unable to come to Sri Asana, Kolkata, for Janmotsava celebration.
Anyway, shortly, Niyam seva vrata, i.e., Kartik vrata will be observed in the city of Dhaka for
one month. Association is the main support for Hari-bhajan in human life. By the association
of avaishnavas, non-devotees, jivas, living entities, can only attain improvement in material life,
whereas, by the association of sadhus, saintly persons, the soul gets more and more involved
in Hari-seva, loving devotional service to Sri Hari. This is indeed one of the main supports of
human life. Please do not be averse to this. If you are coming to Kolkata during Puja, then you
can go to Dhaka from Kolkata to observe Sri Niyama seva (service to be observed in the month
of Kartik) there; then you will be able to get the benefit of associating with the sadhus for more
than a month. Being deprived of such association, we are spending our life in vain. Instead
of Hari seva, other works and activities are occupying space in our lives. Therefore, I desire that
you should participate in Hari-seva during the one-month celebration on account of the
foundation of Sri Madhva Gaudiya Matha in Dhaka. In reply to this letter, please let us know on
which date you will be arriving at the Asana in order to travel to Dhaka. Meditating
upon “Sreyanshi bahuvighnani1”, please carefully analyze the sloka
“labdhva su-durlabham idam bahu-sambhavante manusyam artha-dam anityam apiha dhirah

My dear—

I have received your card dated 21st. Srijukta *** Prabhu has been recently traveling in
Ritudvip, Jahnudvip, Modadrumdvip, and other islands. When he wants to go to Dhanbad, he
will inform beforehand.

We are doing so so. Sundarananda is still residing here.

It appears that the departed *** babu was a believer in Theosophist philosophy. He did
not sincerely accept the concept of pure devotion as it is. Hence, all these fallacious conclusions
have appeared through his writings.

1. The pastime of Sri Gaurasundar is eternal, hence, the impersonal Brahma has not temporarily
manifested His form to provide occasional relief and strength. That is just mere Mayavada.

2. Savisesha Brahma, the Lord with His divine form and attributes, is eternally affectionate
towards the unadulterated, pure souls and does not establish any affection towards conditioned
souls. Materialistic feelings and attractions of the conditioned souls cannot even reach Him.
Reading the sentences which you have quoted from that text, we cannot restrain ourselves from
bursting out in laughter. Even protesting against such foolishness implies giving unreasonable
and unjust honor to the author, which he is not worthy of. But the author has not done a good act
by imposing the material responsibility of serving parents on Mahaprabhu’s shoulder just
because of his own mundane ideas and conceptions.

3. The third question is an indication of extreme indiscretion.

4. Sri Sri Mahaprabhu did not ever buy and send saree to the wife of his purvashram, previous
stage of life.

5. Nimai knows if He has accepted any service offered by *** babu. However, towards living
entities like us, only his severity has been expressed.

6. Answer to the sixth question – uproarious laughter.

31. Duty of vaidha bhakta, a regulated, bonafide devotee, during the eclipse

“There is no consideration of auspicious (proper) or inauspicious (improper) time for chanting”

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

English calendar - 27.09.22

My dear—

I have received your letter dated 5th Aswin. We have sent the magazine ‘Gaudiya’ to Sri
***. There is no possibility of getting the old editions of ‘Gaudiya’ now. If, by chance, that is
possible, we will let you know.

For a smarta, the period of the eclipse is inauspicious and impure. Hence, during this
time, they do not perform the activities which they are prohibited to do during the impure
condition. But vaidha bhaktas, the bonafide devotees, inclined towards loving devotional service
do not wait for those mundane rituals. If possible, they should perform their duties of offering
respective services to the Supreme Lord on time. The devotees used to take holy dip in the rivers
and perform other rituals at the time when Sri Gaurasundar had not yet spread the message
of bhakti, loving devotional service, on this earth. But after Mahaprabhu preached the glories of
Holy Name of the Lord, it has been prescribed to only perform Hari Kirtan, the congregational
chanting of Hare Krishna Mahamantra all the time. There is no consideration of auspicious
(proper) or inauspicious (improper) time for chanting. Those who have the desire of collecting
pious credits for material prosperity only engage in such consideration. During the eclipse, a
bonafide devotee does not perform rituals like taking bath in Ganga, etc., i.e., they do not
perform any fruitive activity desiring for the result. Today, I am going to Mathura Mandala to
take bath in Sri Radha Kunda.

32. Anger of Vaishnava and nature of Sraddha ceremony, the final rites of offering
oblation

“The devotees of the Lord are always engaged in pleasing the senses of Krishna”

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

Sri Gaudiya Matha , Kolkata

11th May, 1923

Dearest –

I have received news through your card. Anger is nothing but the tendency that rises
because of obstruction to sense gratification. The devotees of the Lord are always engaged in
pleasing the senses of Krishna. Those who are obstructing their service can be called ‘bhakta-
dveshi’, envious towards devotees. Hence, the tendency of venting anger towards such bhakta-
dveshis is included within devotional practice and can be termed as a type of bhajan. Those who
equate such devotional activity with general materialistic anger have a hellish mentality. The
devotees have the strength to accept the impediments and disruptions to sensual pleasures. Hence,
one is contented with not gratifying one’s own sense organs. But one is very concerned
about bhajan and extremely prompt in expressing one’s anger towards one hindering devotional
service to Sri Krishna.

Be a Vaishnava, either a householder or a renunciate, he does not have any impurity or

grief. Just by performing Hariseva, service to Sri Hari, pitrisraddha and tarpan i.e., the rituals of
offering an oblation to the forefathers are automatically completed. There is no need to separately
perform such rituals. However, for maintaining social practices and customs, a householder
Vaishnava can follow his daily schedule of chanting the Holy Name of Lord Sri Hari, thereby
purifying himself and then perform a ceremony by offering Mahaprasada (remnants of the Lord)
- that is Vaishnava Sraddha. Please convey my affectionate blessings to Sriman *** Prabhu.

Your ever well-wisher

* * prabhu,

I have received your letter. Following Mahaprabhu’s verse on ‘Trinadapi sunichena1’

regarding the teachings of Vaishnavism, we have to make our tolerance more than that of a tree.
By Krishna’s desire, if the time of enduring pain arrives, please try to tolerate, being very patient.
As a result, though seemingly unbearable, it will equip you with the valuable teachings of
endurance. Please come to Kolkata after a few days. But in the meantime, please learn that
enduring pain is but an opportunity to comprehend religious teachings. I will inform you about
other things later.

Ever-affectionate,

oneself lower than the straw; one should be more tolerant than a tree, devoid of all sense of false

With respectful greetings—

Deceitfulness or wickedness is not favourable to journey to Vaikuntha, the spiritual abode. I had
read a verse from Srimad Bhagavatam, which states that the human birth is meant for achieving
the ultimate goal of life through spiritual cultivation. When you used to come to us in your
childhood days in “Bhakti Bhavan”, then you might have noticed the verse, written on the wall –

“labdhva sudurlabham idam bahu sambhavante manusyam arthadam anityam apiha dhirah |
turnam yateta na pated anumrityu yavan nihsreyasaya visayah khalu sarvatah syat1 ||”

Earlier you knew that this human life is an opportunity to achieve the highest goal. We have both
received a human birth. It is the artha, interest, of both you and me to have inclination towards,
or to hanker after, the eternal need of the living entities. Why then, dear brother, did you become
so greedy for the prakrita-artha, material wealth, to satisfy the prakrita sahajiyas (mundane,
cheap pseudo-devotees)! You have been deprived of the real wealth for last twelve years. I have
been wandering to attain the same wealth (the ultimate goal of life) since my birth. Never have I
felt the necessity to wander for sense enjoyments – which is the object of your collection of
wealth. Nor was any wealth necessary for me to alleviate hunger pangs, to maintain wife and
children or to kindle illicit desires. Never have I endeavoured for material wealth like you. Sri
Krishna has never put me into any trouble or anxiety for filling my belly like all of you…I want
to serve Lord Vishnu. So I have only tried to collect just as much wealth as is required to keep
my sinful body surviving, in order to engage it in the service of Shri Hari. Never have I
endeavoured to acquire any wealth other than that. Even today, I have no greed for anyone’s
wealth… I do not hanker just for perishable wealth like you. Please bless me that I can remain
greedy for eternal, transcendental wealth, birth after birth. I wish that my greatest enemy may
never have the greed for collecting material wealth. May I not have any desire other than praying
for the benefit of my greatest enemy. Please bless me that I may not have to see the faces of
those impious atheistic persons who have greed for material wealth, i.e., those who have
desire to collect money in order to engage them in gaining labha (profit), puja (adoration),
pratistha (distinction, name and fame) as well as enjoying kanaka-kamini (gold and people of
opposite gender), in the last few days of my life.

This is all for today. Please contemplate for a while after reading the letter. Attentively
study the 23rd Chapter, 11th Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam once. Greed for acquiring wealth will
reduce.
Sympathetic in your sorrow,
Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.

After many, many births and deaths, one achieves this rare human form of life. Though this
form is temporary, it provides one the opportunity to attain the highest perfection of life. Thus a
sober human being should quickly endeavor for the ultimate perfection of life as long as his
body, which is always prone to death, has not fallen down and died. This is because, sense
gratification is available even in the most abominable species of life. But spiritual cultivation is
only possible for a human being - Srimad Bhagavatam – 11.09.29)

35. The intention of Srila Bhakti Vinoda and its impediments

“Never try to accumulate wealth or mundane knowledge for your own gratification”

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

Sri Gaudiya Matha , Kolkata

18th Chaitra, 1332
1st April, 1926

With respectful greetings—

One evening, in the beginning of the month of Baisakh of 1321 Bengali era, Srila
Bhaktivinoda Thakura himself very clearly told me about his prediction, at Bhakti Bhavan, that
in due course of time, the poisonous seed of the apasampradaya named ‘Ativadi’ would be
infused in you and as a result, the hollow of your tree-like-heart would be infested with ferocious
wild animals like snakes, biting and causing tremendous harm to bhakti, devotional service. I am
unfortunate that I protested at that time, saying – “They are your sincere followers. They will
never form a protest group to criticize or act against your ideals, of serving Sri Hari, in public. If
they attempt to do so, I will try to stop them with my very life.” I did not disclose this to you
until now, sensing that you would be sad to hear this. On the other hand, you had already started
performing such activities from before. You have been providing impediments at every step of
fulfilling Srimad Bhaktivinoda Thakura’s transcendental desire till now. Therefore, I have
always been boldly declaring that the apasampradayas, like you, never have any connection with
the suddha-bhakti, pure devotional service, or with Srila Thakura Mahasay. You have gone off
the rails of bhakti, not listening to my words. I am writing about a few of the intentions of
Srimad Bhaktivinoda Thakur, in his own words, below –

1. People who are proud of their worldly possessions and acquired wealth, unable to obtain
real aristocracy, say that the Vaishnavas have appeared in the low-class families due to
their past sinful activities. By saying so, these people commit an offense. Please know for
certain that the service of restoring the custom of transcendental Varnashrama which
you have already started as the remedy to this recently, is the real service to the
Vaishnavas.

2. Due to the lack of preaching the conclusions of pure devotional service, these feminine
superstitions and abominable teachings are being considered as bhakti among the men
and women in sahajiyas, ativadis and other apasampradayas (the cheap pseudo-
devotees). Please combat all these evil conclusions by practising the real conduct and
preaching the conclusions of pure devotion.

3. Please try to start parikrama, the circumambulation, of Sri Dhama Navadwip as soon as
possible. Through this service, everyone in this world will attain Krishna Bhakti. Please
make special efforts to ensure that the service in Sri Mayapur Dhama is established
permanently and that it prospers day by day. The real service of Sri Mayapur is
possible by – establishing printing press, propagating the devotional scriptures and
preaching the Holy Name of the Lord (not secluded devotional service). You should
not let the preaching or service of Sri Mayapur get hindered, by trying to perform
solitary devotional service.
4. In my absence, the responsibility of performing loving service to Sri Mayapur is on you.
Please make special efforts to fulfill that – This is my special order to you. The barbaric
and envious men can never possess bhakti. So never accept their advices. But do not let
them know that directly or indirectly.
5. I always had a sincere endeavour to point out the significance of pure devotional service
as depicted in the scriptural texts like “Srimad Bhagavatam”, “Shat Sandarbha” ,
“Vedanta Darshan”, etc. Please accept the responsibility of this service. Sri Mayapur
will be greatly benefitted if you can establish educational institutions there.

6. Never try to accumulate wealth or mundane knowledge for your own gratification.
Collect all those only for serving the Supreme Lord. Never indulge in any bad
association for the sake of money or your own interests.

This is all for today. I am going somewhere to attend Vaishnava Seva, a programme arranged
for serving the Vaishnavas. I will gradually respond to your remaining questions after returning.

Sympathetic in your sorrow,

Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.

36. Things to be known in the life of sadhaka, devotional practitioner

“Serving Shri Krishna and His devotees as well as chanting the Holy Name may seem to be three
independent activities. But actually they have the same significance”

Obeisances to Sri Sri Gandharvika Giridhari

Sri Chaitanya Matha , Sri DhamaMayapur

English calendar - 5.08.26

My dear –

I received news through your letter dated 21st Ashadh. I was in ‘Sri Jagannath Ballabh
Math’ in Sri Purusottam Kshetra (Puri) at that time. After that, I returned to Sri Gaudiya Math after
residing in Sri Bhubaneswar and Cuttack for a few days. It has been 10-12 days since I arrived
here.

I can understand that you were maintaining the Varanasi Matha alone and hence your mind
got anxious to write such a letter.

“krame krame paya loke bhava sindhukul1”

Ashavandha, firm faith to receive the grace of Sri Krishna, samutkantha, intense
eagerness for His mercy, Karshna-seva, performing service to Krishna and anything pertaining
to Krishna, chanting as well as singing the Holy Name of Krishna – all these bring
auspiciousness. If we are always eager to please Krishna with all possible means, various
delusions of Maya (internal potency of Lord) cannot cover our consciousness. Please all engage
in hearing and chanting; study the scriptures written by the mahajanas (the exalted devotees) and
the magazine ‘Gaudiya’. Then, there will not be any reluctance in acceptance of siddhanta,
scriptural conclusions.

Please discuss Harikatha, discourses on topics of Lord Sri Hari, with the devotees you
are residing with. Then you will be able to realise about your own unworthiness and
insignificance, as well as your progress on the path of bhajan, devotional service. You know the
verse “sarvakshana apanake hina kari’ mane 2 ” very well.

Serving Shri Krishna and His devotees as well as chanting the Holy Name may seem to
be three independent activities. But actually they have the same significance.

By performing Nama Sankirtana, the congregational chanting of the Holy Name, one
automatically performs service to Lord Shri Krishna and His devotees.

By performing service to the Vaishnavas, one automatically performs Krishna Kirtan, the
chanting and glorification of Lord Shri Krishna as well as Krishna seva, loving devotional
service of Shri Krishna.

Just by performing service to Shri Krishna, one performs congregational chanting of the
Holy Name as well as service to the Vaishnavas.

This is proven by the verse “Sattvam Visuddham Vasudeva-sabditam 3 ”

By reading Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita, one performs service to Lord Krishna as well as
congregational chanting of the Holy Name. By reading Srimad Bhagavatam in the association of
the devotees, one attains the same. By performing archana (Deity-worship) also, one performs
all the three activities. By chanting the Holy Name also, the same is nicely accomplished.

Please think about your past history in such a way that it appears favourable for
devotional services i.e., please know that the previous unfavourable conditions were just the
preceding state of the current favourable condition. The dangers which come because of those
adversaries give birth to conditions favourable for devotional service in the next moment. All the
objects of the entire visible world are the ingredients of service to Krishna. Our mentality, which
is averse to service, bewilders of our mind regarding the worldly objects thereby indulging us in
material sense enjoyment. On the awakening of transcendental consciousness, when we can
observe everything in this world in relation to Krishna, then the poisonous fruit of pratistha, our
own name and fame, cannot devour us.

“chancala-jibana-srota pravahiya, kaler sagare dhay 4”. With this conscience, the
propensity to serve Lord Shri Hari increases at every step. Therefore, my duty is to happily
accept whatever pleases Krishna. If Krishna feels happy by keeping me averse to Him, then I
must readily accept the sorrow.

“tomara sevaya duhkha haya yata seo ta parama sukha 5” – This is the realization of the
Vaishnavas. Please try to follow that example. All anarthas, the unfavourable and unwanted
habits, when uncovered in the service of Krishna will become arthas, favourable habits, which
are the ultimate causes of our eternal benefit. The previous character of Thakura Bilvamangala,
the story of Sarvabhauma, the dry arguments of Prakashananda – all these anarthas eventually
transformed into service to Lord Shri Hari. Hence, please do not think at all about the previous
anarthas. Regarding the present anarthas – by performing sravana and kirtana, i.e., hearing and
chanting on the topics of Shri Hari, strongly, the anarthas will not be able to dominate anymore.
Our life span is short, therefore please make an endeavour to perform sincere service to Shri Hari
without duplicity until death. Following the example and path set by the mahajanas, the great
devotees, is our only means of attaining auspiciousness.

Please cultivate the verse, “ aham tarisyami duranta-param 6 ”. I have read out your
letter to Sri Bhakti Vilasa Thakura and he has expressed his satisfaction after hearing it.

I hope everyone is performing Sri Hari-kirtana, glorification of Lord Shri Hari, as well as
serving the Vaishnavas there with great enthusiasm. Please convey our heartfelt greetings to
everyone.

As a consequence of past fruitive activities, sometimes I remain healthy while at other

times I become ill. When I am healthy, I become averse to Lord Sri Krishna and as a result, I
consider the devotees, more advanced than me in bhajan, as inferior to me. That’s why, Krishna,
considering my situation, keeps me in various kinds of sorrow, miseries, illness and other
adverse situations. Then I try to realize the meaning of the verse starting with, “Tat te
‘nukampam 7 ”. When indulging in material objects unrelated to Krishna, we become inclined to
quarrel with different worldly people. When we are occupied with loving, devotional service,
we are attacked by the materialistic persons. I hope you are doing well.

Well-wisher
Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.

37. Protest against religion mongering1

“The pure devotees never approve the false show of fake devotional service. In this age of Kali,
the path of bhakti, the devotional service, has been blocked by crores of thorns”

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

Sri Gaudiya Matha , Kolkata

15th January, 1927

With lots of reverence to the Acharya, this is my request–

I have arrived at Sri Gaudiya Matha yesterday from Sri Chaitanya Matha, Sri Dhama
Navadwip. I hope you have received the letter I had written to you from Sri Dhama Navadwip…

When there is nothing called ‘Dharma’ except sense gratification for the pseudo-
devotees, it makes me wonder, will the principles of pure devotion not be re-established and
preached in places like Vrindavan? Will the Deities of Sri Vrindavana always remain as
commodities of business for the caste Goswamis? Such unlawful businessmen, embracing the
duties of the traders, will keep on maintaining their self-interest in the name of service to the
Deities and selling Mantras. And will that be regarded as ‘Dharma’? Isn’t it desirable to the
present residents of Vrindavana that the whole world becomes benefitted by the cultivation of
pure devotional service?

The pure devotees never approve the false show of fake devotional service. In this age of
Kali, the path of bhakti, the devotional service, has been blocked by crores of thorns. Here, there
is no other way except Sri Krishna Chaitanya Matha. The foolish people are unable to understand
this. If you can propagate our message in Hindi, Vrajabuli language like a manifesto, then I feel
many people might become favourable.

The service to the Deities is not a commodity and His servants are not traders. They are
Vaishnavas, devotees. Abandoning everything, Vaishnavas are performing service to Sri Hari by
spreading the glories of the Lord, for the benefit of themselves and all others in the world. The
traders deal in paddy, rice, marble houses and rooms on the pretext of Deity worship. They execute
their business with the help of all these dealings in order to fill their bellies, buy new buildings and
temples, appoint unworthy people for service, thereby incurring offenses. They make a show of
taking initiation deceitfully from unworthy people, take improper instructions of bhajan and what
not! The pure devotional community does not have any interest or faith in such activities.

The devotional community should not abandon bhajan and get carried away by the worldly
sensations or emotional excitements. In the practical world, real truth is being concealed and
warped in such a way that this duplicity is being accepted as ‘religion’ rather than simplicity. At
this moment, the real devotees of Sri Gaurahari are finding it to be their duty to deliver the world
from the clutches of pseudo Vaishnavism by preaching the sincere, undeceitful truth. This truth is
the Swarupa Lakshana, intrinsic aspect, of the Supreme Lord.
My earnest request to you is this – Please make a last endeavour to establish the pure
devotional realm in the years remaining, thereby becoming the object of praise and admiration of
the Vaishnava community. The book ‘Vaishnavism Real and Apparent’ has been distributed
widely. At this moment, it is extremely necessary to act for the real welfare of the Vaishnavas.
You are indeed a qualified and capable person. This can certainly be achieved by you. Most of the
duplicities centering around worship in Bengal have been caught and identified. Therefore, now it
is necessary to refute these in all the places, wherever such artificial shows, on the pretext of
religious practises, is going on.

The servant of Harijanas, the devotees of Lord Sri Hari,

Sri Siddhanta Saraswati

38. Removing lamentation

“Whatever the Supreme Lord does, is for our benefit”

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

Sri Gaudiya Matha , Kolkata;

English calendar - 29th May, 1927

My dear –

Today I have returned to Sri Gaudiya Matha from Puri with Sriman Paramananda in the
morning. After arriving at the station, I heard that, by the will of the Supreme Lord, ‘Tota’ has left
us forever. You treated ‘Tota’ as your own son. He was the servant of Krishna. He came to the
house of the Vaishnavas. Both of you served him as his parents. He has left after accepting the
service that he was destined to receive. Though the material body of ‘Tota’ was received from you,
he is a spirit soul, a Vaishnava. His eternal duty is serving the Supreme Lord. A Vaishnava arrives
in the material world based on one’s karma and stays in this gross universe for an amount of time
as specified by karma. Later he departs to where Baladeva sends him, based on his qualifications.
Inside Baladeva, resides Mahalakshmi and inside Mahalakshmi, resides the Supreme Lord.
Therefore, ‘Tota’ has departed for serving his object of worship. He is jivatma, the spirit soul, and
a Vaishnava, originating from Sri Nityananda Prabhu – the predominating Deity of Sandhini
potency, the knowledge potency of the Lord. So, if you learn to establish Lord Vishnu as your son,
then you will not feel his absence any more. As the Supreme Lord was existing in the heart of
‘Tota’ as the Supreme Indweller, you have served none other than the Supreme Lord. So now also,
you should serve Lord Baladeva. Tota’s inert material body, that had emerged from this universe,
has merged into the five gross elements. The spirit-soul of ‘Tota’ will be engaged in the service of
Shakti and the Shaktiman – the Supreme Potency and its Absolute Possessor. Your material son
has been separated from his material father. He is meant for the Supreme Lord and hence his actual
duty as a Vaishnava is to serve the Supreme Lord. Knowing that you are not conditioned by Maya
(the illusory potency of the Lord) like me, the Supreme Lord will bestow His infinite mercy and
capability unto you so that you are not grief-stricken. This is my conception. Please remember the
pastimes regarding Sri Srivasa Pandita’s son. Read ‘Shoka Shatana’ and ‘Sri Chaitanya
Bhagavata’ . When Mahaprabhu accepted sannyasa, the renounced order of life, at that time, He
said to His aged mother, His wife Vishnupriya Devi and the residents of Navadwipa – “ I am just
a human being, established in different kinds of relationships with all of you. When I am gone,
you should establish all those relationships with Krishna, instead of Me, and thereby give Me the
opportunity to serve Shri Hari, free from all bondages.” You will also get more time to serve the
Supreme Lord in Tota’s absence. Whatever the Supreme Lord does, is for our benefit. I am a
conditioned soul, what more can I explain?

Ever wellwisher,

Sri Siddhanta Saraswati

With great affection –

... We, surrounded by enemies, are sincerely determined to engage in the service of Lord
Sri Hari and Harijanas, the devotees of Sri Hari. All of us, more or less, forget about serving
Krishna. My request to you all is this - co-operating with each other and remaining united
together, please perform service to Sri Hari. Remembering the verse, “Ekaki amara nahi
paya bala 1”, please fulfill our objective of performing kirtan-yajna, the congregational
chanting, while co-operating with each other. Those who are given the responsibility of
arranging and leading the kirtan-yajna should possess the great quality of having a friendly
relation with everyone. That person should satisfy all the Vaishnavas and indulge in
Haribhajan, devotional service to Lord Sri Hari. I hope that you, becoming equiped with this
great quality, will complete the services nicely during the festival.

Ever well-wisher,
Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.

With great affection –

I have received both of your cards, dated 13.11.27 and 16.11.27. I write letters to ***
daily. Please show this letter to Kunjababu. I have not received any letter from him yesterday. I
have sent the proofs of the Harmonist yesterday. The definition of Bhakti given by Nimananda
prabhu in his article is incomplete. Besides, to explain, Avaroha or deduction, he has used the
word ‘unknown’. Though the Absolute Truth may apparently seem to be unknown to us from an
external point of view, but in the true conception, He is the best known. The unknown cannot
incarnate as Avaroha or Avatara. He, inaccessible by senses, descends down, but, is not (i.e,
does not remain) unknown. He comes upon (i.e., in front of) the material eyesight. If you can get
that part changed, it would be good. Based on your desire, I have sent the first two pages of the
description of my journey in the Registry bookpacket and am writing the remaining part. I am
gradually becoming infirm and hence, cannot perform services fast, but that should not reduce
the agility and activities of you, Vasudeva prabhu and others…The article written by *** for the
magazine ‘Gaudiya’ is very difficult for you to send to me so far, rather, you can yourselves
check and proofread the contents. It is extremely necessary to print ‘Sri Chaitanya Bhagavat’
and 10th Canto of ‘Srimad Bhagavatam’ very fast. It is also essential to print ‘Chaitanya
Mangala’ as soon as possible. I am sending the Sanskrit article “Vilasa O Viraga”, written by the
scholar of Udupi in a registered packet, for publishing it in The Harmonist.

Ever well-wisher,
Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.

41. Worldly, moral rules and love for Krishna

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

My dear, -

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

My dear –

I have not received news from you for many days. I hope, by the mercy of the Supreme
Lord, everything is fine with you…

Please bless me so that I can always remain dedicated in fulfilling the wishes of Srimad
Bhaktivinoda Thakura and in performing kirtana, the glorifications of the Supreme Lord, based
on his desires. The Deity of Sri Gaurasundara has been installed in Kurukshetra, the centre of
vipralambha-rasa (ecstatic emotion in separation). Now the service of Sri Gaurahari has been
introduced in Naimisaranya, the centre of the recitation of Srimad Bhagavatam. You have already
witnessed with your own eyes that the service of Sri Gaurahari has been established in Varanasi,
the centre of worship of Lord Shiva. Sri Gaurasundara may be installed in Sri Vrindavan next year.
Though I have received darshan of Pushkara, Dvaraka, Gopi Sarovara, Prabhasa, Sudamapuri
and Avantipuri – the seven sacred places awarding liberation, I feel that I am not getting liberated
because I am not engaging in your services. But it is not that I do not intend to serve Krishna in a
liberated state.

The verses from Srimad Bhagavat-gita - “api cet suduracara bhajate1 ”, “sarvadharman
parityajya2 ”, “yat karoyi yad asnasi3 ” , “ya pritiravivekinam ” as well as the verse “janmadyasy4
” are coming to my mind today. In this context, I am also remembering you and hence writing this
letter to disturb you. The Ethical Principles or moral rules are considered the best in this material
world – I have no difference of opinion in this matter. But since Krishna Prema, divine love for
Sri Krishna, is most relishable, moral rules can not be superior or more relishable than Krishna
Prema. Many people do not appreciate the pastime of Sri Krishna of forcibly taking away the
clothes, garlands, etc. from the washerman, after killing (delivering) him. They may consider the
sincere premika devotees, taking shelter of transcendental parakiya rasa (nectar of loving affairs
of Krishna) as less ethical. But there is such a great, astonishing potency in the divine love for Sri
Hari, that all the other, apparently most relishable moral standards or sense of duties, become dim
in front of it. When the sense of one’s duty becomes an impediment to the service of Sri Krishna,
then abandoning those duties, if one gets absorbed in the service of Shri Krishna, that code of
conduct should definitely be adored. If you write an article yourself discussing this matter, I will
be very glad. This is because, the performer of kirtana does not attain loving devotional service, if
they are not considerate. And without devotional service, one’s obligation to material duties, as
well as one’s disbelieving temper and tendencies are not removed. I wish to return to Kolkata soon.
The servant of the Harijanas, the devotees of Lord Sri Hari,

Sri Siddhanta Saraswati

O my Lord, Sri Krishna - the son of Vasudeva, O Supreme Lord, I offer my respectful obeisances
unto You. I meditate upon Lord Sri Krishna because He is the Absolute Truth and the primary
cause of all causes of the creation, maintenance as well as destruction of the manifested universes.
He is directly and indirectly conscious of all manifestations, and He is independent because there
is no other cause beyond Him. It is He only who first imparted the Vedic knowledge unto the heart
of Brahma, the original living being. Just as one is bewildered by the illusory representations of
water seen in fire, or land seen on water, similarly, great sages and demigods are placed into
illusion by Him. Only because of Him do the material universes, temporarily manifested by the
reactions of the three modes of nature, appear factual, although they are unreal. Therefore, I
meditate upon Him, who is eternally existent in the transcendental abode, ever-free from the
illusory representations of the material world. I meditate upon Him, for He is the Absolute Truth.

42. The sectarian facts and Sri Chaitanya Matha

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

Sri Gaudiya Matha ;

29th Keshava, Gaurabda 440

The great scholar,

Sriyukta Madhusudan Goswami Maharaja

Radha-Raman-Ghera, Sridhama Vrindavan

With due respect befitting to the Gaudiya Vaishnava Acharya -

Maharaja, I and a few other devotees have returned to Sri Gaudiya Math yesterday after
completing a tour of India. It will take some time to dispose of the travel fatigue.

After meeting you, we went to have darshan of the Deity of Lord Sri Govinda in Sri Jaipur
and from there, via Ajmer, Chitor, Mauli, we reached Nathdvara wherewe had darshan of the Deity
served by Sri Madhavendra Puripada. After having scriptural discussion with the Acharya, head,
of Vallabha sampradaya there, we went to the city of Bombay via Khandwa and Nashik. After
having a wide variety of scriptural discussions with the Acharya of Vallabha Kula - the lineage of
Vallabhacharya, we took darshan of the Samadhi of Sri Visvarupa Sankararanya Yatiraja, who
was the elder brother of Sri Gaurahari and non-different from Sri Nityananda Prabhu. Then, after
having darshan of Bhima river, we went to Udupi - the center of preaching of Sri Madhvacharya,
via Mangoli, Panda, Tadra, Gokarna and Nava-Gaya.

As per your wish, I am enclosing a picture of Sri Madhva Muni and another of Sri Udupi
Krishna with this letter.

Many of the eight Math in-charge yatis, who are in renounced order of life, carrying the
ekadanda, the stick with a single rod, perform bhajan in the (inner) guise of a Gopi. I have
collected a picture of that. I am sending you some related information in this regard with this letter,
which has been mentioned here and there. Kindly read it.

“It was indeed a happy idea of Sri Madhwa’s, to ordain 8 ascetics, put them each in charge
of a separate Math and make them jointly and svereally responsible for the poojas and festivals of
Sri Krishna’s temple… The monks who take charge of Sri Krishna by rotation, are so many Gopees
of Brindaban, who oved with and loved Sri Krishna with an indescribable intensity of feeling and
are taking re-births now for the priviledge of worshipping Him. These monks conduct themselves
as if they are living and moving with Sri Krishna Himself… Sri Krishna presiding here being a
boy, they feed him in the forenoon with choice offerings.” (Life and Teachings of Sri
Madhwacharya by C. M, Padmanavachar, chapter XIII pp. 143 and 145).

However, the eight Math in-charges have not accepted the speculative unauthorized
practises like the Sakhi-bheki-sect, a deviant Vaishnava sect where devotees often physically dress
themselves as Gopi. Each of them has the eka-danda, the stick with a single rod and kaupina-
varirvasa, the dress of a sannyasi.

The sannyasi-in-charge of Krishnapur Matha is presently acting as the servitor of the Deity
of Sri Krishna with a churning-rod in His hand. I conversed with him in Sanskrit. Despite being a
sannyasi, they follow the Vidhi-marga, the path of rules and regulations of worship, as revealed in
the karma-kanda of the scriptures, for worshipping Sri Krishna. Everyday, they feed thousand
Brahmins and serve a hundred and fifety cows with their own hands. I have also brought a city-
map of Udupi. Again, we went for darshan of Sri Ranganath. There we saw a procession in which
Sri Ranganath Deity accompanied by the Deities of the eighteen Alwaras and Acharyas were taken
in palanquins from Sri Mandir, the temple, to Sri Mandap, the stage. I met with a few tridandi
sannyasis, the sannyasis carrying sticks having three-rods.
The enjoyment of material sense objects does not let one to realize one’s propensity to
serve. It misleads us to consider service as materialistic. This is the nature of a non-devotee sense-
enjoyer. The devotees are adverse to sambhoga-vada, material sense enjoyments.

Please have a merciful glance towards the devotees of Sri Krishna Chaitanya Matha in
Vrindavan so that they can perform their devotional service peacefully, without any disturbance.

Sri Chaitanya Matha is the only center for pure devotees taking refuge unto the lotus feet
of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu,. This is not just a branch center for the devotees surrendered unto
Sriman Mahaprabhu’s lotus feet. The sole duty of each of the Gaudiya Vaishnava devotees, who
are the followers of Sri Svarupa Damodara, is to perform the action of scrubbing and scouring,
wherever there are misconducts opposing pure devotion within the devotees of Sriman
Mahaprabhu and wherever there is preaching of unauthorized conclusions. That is why, the pure
devotees sheltered in Sri Chaitanya Matha have taken refuge in the Matha, in order to perform real
service to Sri Gaurahari.

The devotees surrendered unto Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, at present, are three crore
Indians in number. But many of them, in reality, are not pure devotees of Sri Chaitanya
Mahaprabhu. Even though they are pseudo-devotees, they are all the servants of Sri Gaurahari.

Sriyukta Madhusudan Adhikari Mahasay has sent me a copy of his book on socio-cultural
tradition entitled “Gaudiya Vaishnava Itihasa” - the history of Gaudiya Vaishnavas. I wish to have
a look at it some time.

I am extremely grateful to you for the merciful glance you showered upon us during our
visit to Sri Vrindavan, thereby showing utmost reverence to the lineage of our spiritual masters.

With great affection—

I received news through your letter dated 7th Jaistha. Staying here for almost a month, I
am feeling much better now and can stay several more days. Sriman *** and others are with
me... You have written that you have been quite upset since the end of the festival. There is no
fruitful consequence of listening to bogus people, rather, one should laugh all these away.
Evil persons do not cause any favor, but can only cause harm to others. If *** does not have
some special service in hand, he may travel to Barisal soon. Having established Matha s (temple)
in different places, we have to remain concerned in various ways. The Supreme Lord only knows
when can a Matha be eventually established in Barisal. The Matha that we had actually planned
for Barisal is about to be established in Kolkata. I believe you must have heard about Sriyukta
Jagabandhu Datta Mahashay; he has donated the land for the Matha .

44. The duty of the Gaudiya Vaishnavas during Surya-Uparag, solar eclipse

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

Dear –

I have received your letters and a few telegrams. I have issued you a telegram today to
provide some anukulya, financial support, to Kuruskshetra. There are lots of services to be
performed by the followers of devotional path in the festival that will be organised during the
solar eclipse in Sri Vyasa Gaudiya Matha. We have to take the dear associates of the Supreme
Lord - the servitors of our worshipable Deity, Sri Krishna, to Kurukshetra to relieve them of their
prolonged pain of separation from Him. Therefore, our foremost duty is to serve the
Vrajavasis, residents of Vraja, distressed by the separation from the Lord of Mathura, Sri
Krishna. Though Sri Krishna resides in Dvaraka, being the worshipable object of Aisvarya-rasa,
the mood of opulence, we have to bring Him on a transcendental chariot to ‘Sannihita-sara’ in
the Syamanta-Panchaka region, on the occasion of solar eclipse. Therefore, there is necessity of
a chariot.

You know that we have some expenditures for worldly matters in all these services. We
are the living entities engrossed in sense objects - busy in sense gratification. Therefore, if these
transcendental pastimes are manifested before us in form of the deities, then our propensity to
serve will awaken. The objective of our service is to establish the union of the visaya, Supreme
object of worship, and the ashraya, worshiper. Besides, it especially helps us, who are averse to
devotional service, by inspiring us to engage in more service, through the awakening of these
transcendental pastimes in our mind. In other words, it releases us from the service of mundane
sense objects and in the field of the heart, awakens the desire to serve the associates of the
Supreme Lord, who are serving Him in His transcendental eternal pastimes.

Sri*** is engaged in bringing the Deity of Sri Krishna in the chariot from Dvaraka to Sri
Vyasasrita Gaudiya Matha in Kurukshetra near Sannihita Sarovar. So in order to help in that
mission, all of you should try to accumulate worldly donations and financial supports, through
your bodily, verbal and mental services. Time is extremely limited. Our duty is to sincerely
endeavor to make it possible that everyone is able to observe the Deity form of all these pastimes
and thereby follow the respective moods.

After showing *** the festival of Kasi and Naimisaranya, please show him the glories of the
Vrindavan pastimes as depicted in the verse “Tathapy-antah-khelan-madhura-murali-pancama-
juse mano me kalindi-pulina-vipinaya sprhayati” in the Kurukshetra-pastime of Krishna. By
serving these transcendental pastimes, their desire for mundane sense enjoyments will be
thwarted and their human birth will thereby become successful. Please know that taking
ritualistic bath in ‘Sannihita-Sara’ or Brahma-Tirtha and other lakes of Syamanta-Panchaka
including Dvaipayan Hrada during the solar-eclipse leads to the destruction of all the sinful
reactions. Particularly, by taking bath in the sacred water of all those lakes during the solar-
eclipse, one kindles the propensity to serve Sri Krishna; and as a secondary effect of this, the
desire of performing sins as well as acquiring pious credits for mundane enjoyment are driven
away.

During the solar eclipse, all the current followers of Ballabh sampradaya, included under
Vishnuswami Sampradaya, will be present there. Kurukshetra, being quite far away from Gauda-
desh (Bengal), many people are unable to be physically present there. Despite staying at a distant
place, they, individually as well as collectively, try their level best to arrange the meeting of Sri
Radha Govinda. It is needless to say that those who contribute in any possible way towards the
meeting of Lord Shri Krishna, afflicted by separation from Vraja, and His associates of Vraja,
however insignificant or crude that contribution might be, will be able to find a propensity to
serve an exalted devotee inside them.

Those who will not be able to physically reach Kurukshetra to get darshan of Lord Sri Krishna,
can nourish the transcendental mellow through their feeling of intense separation, by assisting to
arrange such meeting.

The karmis, inclined towards fruitive activities, cannot realize these exalted topics.
Though they, aspiring for piety, will go ahead to remove their gross sins during the solar eclipse
there, service towards Sri Krishna will also be secondarily achieved through their desires of
accumulating piety. This year, a health centre will be established there speculating the need to
restore the health of the unhealthy visitors and arrangements will also be made to help the ill
pilgrims.

Those who are floating in the current opposing pure devotional service, leading to an
aversion towards festivals held at Sri Madhva Gaudiya Math in Nababpur, Dhaka, can also be
told to help with the festival at Kurukshetra. As a result, they too can be liberated from the
offenses incurred from the association of caste-Goswamis and can accumulate some piety
without knowing it.
Ever well-wisher
Sri Siddhanta Saraswati

(FOOTNOTE: Still, within, I desire to go to the bank of the River Yamuna and under the
shade of the trees I wish to hear Him play the fifth note of His sweet flute which charms the
mind)

45. The special characteristics of service in Kurukshetra by the Gaudiya Vaishnavas

“The gopis appear to have the same mood as Krishna, being fully absorbed in visaya-vigraha”

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

Laimkhera, Shillong, English calendar - 17.10.28

My dear, –

Yesterday, the professors reached here safely… At this time during the solar eclipse, we
should have all concentrated on the service in Kurukshetra. But due to the extreme eagerness of
Nimananda prabhu, we have been compelled to travel here. Letters and telegrams are coming one
after another from Kurukshetra… Therefore, it is essential for you all to go there without further
delay. The service can continue later in Assam…

Only 25 days are left until the solar eclipse… Different people from U.P., Punjab and
Central India are especially aware of the eclipse in Kurukshetra. At least 15 hundred thousand
people will be assembled there.

We have prepared a chariot. Other than this, there is a necessity of tube wells and temporary
tents. There, we will also have to send a Medical Relief Mission. This solar eclipse has arrived
after almost a very long time. I am writing to you the duties of Gaudiya Vaishnavas during the
eclipse in brief.

It is a custom to take bath in the Brahma-sarovara during the solar eclipse. Lord Shri
Krishna had gone there with Balaram in a chariot from Dvaraka. On the occasion of the eclipse,
the residents of Vraja were also present there in the pretext of taking bath. Therefore, the Gaudiya
devotees, who always endeavour for arranging the meeting of Sri Radha and Sri Govinda,
will try to properly perform their service with utmost care, in order to make this event a
success. Following the moods and ideals of Kurukshetra, Lord Krishna in His second
appearance as Shri Gaurasundara has disclosed vipralambha-bhava, the sentiment of ecstatic
love in separation, of the gopis, by singing songs in front of Sri Jagannathadeva. The karmis,
who are inclined towards fruitive activities, make arrangements for taking bath during the solar
eclipse, in order to remove their sins, which gives them an opportunity to chant the Holy Name of
the Lord during this auspicious moment.

The jnanis (impersonalists), cultivating the concepts of visaya (the object of worship)
relating to alamban-vibhava (the support for spiritual ecstasy), reach the conclusion that they
intend to merge into the Absolute Truth. However, the gopis appear to have the same mood as
Krishna, being fully absorbed in visaya-vigraha, the worshipable form, of Sri Krishna, actually
remaining separate from Him while apparently being merged into Him. The jnanis, arriving at the
proper conclusion from this pastime, may reject their endeavours for merging into the Impersonal
Brahman and therefore give up their respective sentimental moods. Therefore, it is necessary that
all these three classes of people are present during the eclipse. Please inform the contents of the
letter to Tirtha Maharaja as well. Both of you should, with great enthusiasm, be engaged in making
arrangements for the meeting of Sri Radha Govinda. We are here for 5-6 more days. Later, we will
reach Kolkata via Gowalpara and Dhubri in a few days.

Ever wellwisher

Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.

“The topics of Raga are of higher level, but our mouth is not worthy of speaking such higher
topics”

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

Sri Chaitanya Matha , Sri Dhama Mayapur,

English calendar - 13. 12. 28

Dear, —

I am extremely pleased to find the collection of scriptural essence in your letter. By

cultivating all these topics more and more in your mind, you will be able to understand that such
immature intelligence originating from idleness is unable to produce any fruitful results. We are
insignificant living entities, the followers of Vidhi Marga (the path of rules and regulations of
worship as revealed by the scriptures), but, not averse to Raga Marga (the path of spontaneous
loving sentiment to the Lord). The topics of Raga are of higher level, but our mouth is not worthy
of speaking such higher topics. If the real, pure devotees hear such elevated topics coming out of
our insignificant mouth, they would surely ridicule us.

Those who have not been able to properly realize the truth about Krishna but are trying to
superficially achieve advancement in the path of Anuraga (spontaneous deep loving attachment to
Krishna) only demonstrate their idleness – This is what the mahajanas (great saints) have
expressed repeatedly.

The Supreme Lord and His Holy Name are the same transcendental object. Those who still
discriminate between the transcendental Name and its Possessor - the Supreme Lord due to their
mundane conceptions, should essentially serve the exalted pure devotees who are sincerely
practising devotion, in order to get rid of their own anarthas (unfavourable qualities). The
associates of Sri Gaur Sundara have explained all these topics. However, if we just keep repeating
those, without actually practising, then people will label us as ‘Prakrita Sahajiya’ (mundane and
cheap pseudo-devotees) and thereby reduce the significance of our movement. Since the pseudo-
devotees have fallen into the mire of misfortune, if one desires to show the real glories of
Raganuga Bhakti to those ‘panke gaur iva sidati’ group (who are helpless as a cow that has
fallen in the mud), one should first himself become an expert in the devotional practise and
then try to preach others for their benefits. Hence, please try to understand all the written topics
very carefully. Devotional practise is not for the sake of external exhibition. Please loudly chant
the Holy Name of Sri Hari and then the gratification, and its desires in the form of idleness will
not be able to devour us.

Your well wisher

Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.

47. Nrimatradhikara – The minimal rights of all human beings

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

Sri Gaudiya Matha , Kolkata

2nd March, 1929

My beloved Sriman Thakura Prasada Adhikari –

Dear object of my affection –

I have received all your news through the letter dated 28th February. Previously, we
heard about your shifting to another place. As a consequence of your moving out from Sitapur,
indeed, our enthusiasm and courage have suffered a setback. Anyway, by the desire of the
Supreme Lord, your convenience is our convenience. Recently, we have been engaged in
organizing the Sri Dhama Parikrama, circumambulation of the Holy Navadwip Dhama, and the
divine appearance festival of Sriman Mahaprabhu. I wish to travel to Haridwar at the end of
April or in the month of May, after the completion of this service. From Haridwar, we will make
a pilgrimage to Badrika-ashrama. If possible, we have a desire to have darshan of all of you.
Based on the scriptural injunctions, each and everyone has the right to receive spiritual
initiation. Unlike the worldly initiation, it is not confined within a certain sect or community. I
am citing a few evidences in this respect. Please explain the meanings to the pandit mahasay,
erudite scholar.
“ tantrikeshu cha mantreshu dikshayam yoshitam api
sadhvinam adhikaro sti sudradinam ca sad-dhiyam”
(Chaste and saintly women, and saintly-hearted sudras are qualified to be initiated in the
chanting of mantras from the Tantras)
In the Smriti-artha-sara as well as in the conversation between Sri Ambarish Maharaj
and Sri Narada Muni, in the Vaisakha Mahatmya of Padmapurana, it is stated:
“agamoktena margena stri-sudrair api pujanam
kartavyam sraddhaya vishnos chintayitva patim hridi
sudranam chaiva bhavati namna vai devatarchanam
sarve 'py agama-margena kuryur vedanukarina
strinam apy adhikaro'sti vishnor aradhanadishu
pati-priya-ratanam cha srutir esa sanatani”
(According to the rules and regulations mentioned in the Agama literature, women can faithfully
render devotional service to Lord Visnu even while remaining devoted to their husbands, and
sudras who have taken initiation can also worship Lord Vishnu. After receiving initiation
according to the rules and regulations described in the Vedas and Agamas, one should worship
the deity of one’s worshipable Lord. Even the non-initiated sudras can worship their worshipable
Lord while chanting the holy name. There is also an ancient custom for the initiated women to
worship Lord Vishnu, especially if they desire benefit for their husband.)

In the Agastya Samhita, it is stated regarding the Rama-Mantra:

“suchi-vrata-tamah sudra dharmika dvija-sevakah
striyah pati-vratas chanye pratilomanulomajah
lokas chandala-paryantah sarve’py atradhikarinah”
(Hari-Bhakti-Vilasa 1.91)
(The sudras, who are religious, serve Brahmanas and observe sacred vows; the chaste ladies;
those born in intercaste families and even dog-eaters are eligible to chant Sri Rama Mantras)
In the Brihat Gautamiya, it is stated in a general way -
“atha krishna-manun vaksye dristadrista-phala-pradan
yan vai vijnaya munayo lebhire muktim anjasa
grhastha vanagas chaiva yatayo brahmacharinah
striyah sudradayas chaiva sarve yatradhikarinah”

(Hari-Bhakti-Vilasa 1.103)

(Now I will describe the Krishna mantras, the chanting of which give results which can
sometimes be seen and sometimes unseen. By knowing these mantras, the thoughtful
practitioners can easily attain liberation. Brahmacharis, grhasthas, vanaprasthas, sannyasis,
women and sudras are all eligible to chant these mantras.)
Especially, the living entities take birth in human form only for serving the Supreme Lord. Since,
spiritual initiation is not possible in births of animals, human birth has been glorified in the
scriptures.
It is stated in the Agama literature:
dvijanam anupetanam svakarma adhyanadisu
yathadhikaro nasitha syat cha upanayanadanu
tatha atra diksitanamtu mantra devarchanadisu
nadhikara astitah kuryat atmanam Siva samstutam
(Just as a brahmana boy is not qualified to perform his occupational duties and study the Vedas if
he is not initiated, so a person who has not taken spiritual initiation is not eligible to chant
spiritual mantras and worship the Supreme Lord. By accepting initiation into Vishnu mantras,
one makes himself worthy of praise even by Lord Siva. Just as one cannot separate himself from
worshiping the Supreme Lord, he cannot separate himself from accepting initiation.)
In the conversation between Sri Brahma and Sri Narada Muni, in the Kartik prasanga of
Skandha purana, it is stated, -
“te narah pasabo loke kim tesam jivane phalam
yenair labdha harer diksa narcito va janardanah”
(Those who have not taken initiation from a spiritual master according to the prescribed rules
and regulations and who have not worshiped the Supreme Lord, Sri Janardana, are no better than
animals and their lives are spent uselessly)
In a conversation between Rukmangada and Mohini, in Visnu Yamala, the following is stated:
“adiksitasya vamoru kritam sarvam nirarthakam
pasuyonim avapnoti diksa virohito janah”
(Hari-Bhakti-Vilasa 2.3-4)

(All activities performed by an uninitiated person are useless. After death, such a person receives
the body of an animal.)
The soul is neither female, male or neuter. The living entities, who are compelled to
enjoy or suffer the fruits of their own actions and deeds, forget their own constitutional position
of a spirit soul and consider themselves to be male or female, accepting their material body to be
their self. The learned persons do not accept this.

yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke

sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhih
yat-tirtha-buddhih salile na karhichij
janesvabhijnesu sa eva go-kharah
(Srimad Bhagavatam 10.84.13)
(One who identifies one’s self as the inert body composed of mucus, bile, and air, who assumes
his wife and family are permanently his own, who thinks an earthen image or the land of his
birth is worshipable, or who sees a place of pilgrimage as mere water, but who never identifies
himself with, feels kinship with, worships, or even visits those who are wise in spiritual truth—
such a person is no better than a cow or an ass)
The interpretation of this verse from Srimad Bhagavatam is that, those consider their own self as
male or female, and decide to be confined within the gross scriptures depicting their materialistic
duties, are counted within idiots.
Especially : -
prayena veda tad idam na mahajanoyam
devya vimohita-matir bata mayayalam
trayyam jadi-krita-matir madhu-puspitayam
vaitanike mahati karmani yujyamanah
(Srimad Bhagavatam 6.3.25)
(Being bewildered by the illusory energy of the Supreme Lord, Yajnavalkya, Jaimini and other
compilers of the religious scriptures cannot know the secret, confidential religious system of the
twelve mahajanas. They cannot realize the transcendental value of performing devotional
service. Because their minds are attracted to the ritualistic ceremonies mentioned in the Vedas —
especially the Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Rig Veda — their intelligence has become dull. Thus
they are busy collecting the ingredients for ritualistic ceremonies that yield only temporary
benefits, such as elevation to Svargaloka for material happiness. They are not attracted to the
sankirtana movement; instead, they are interested in dharma, artha, kama and moksha.)
Unable to understand the conclusions of Srimad Bhagavatam and the concept of bondage and
liberation, many people are deprived of the opportunity of receiving spiritual initiation. But each
and every men and women have the rights to accept spiritual initiation - no learned follower of
the Sanatan Dharma can deny this. The soul is never a male or female of this material world.
One should progress in the wise path of devotion, surpassing the mundane social duties which
are confined within the gross worldly conceptions, due to lack of proper realisation of one’s
original identity.

Ever well-wisher
Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.
48. Things to be known by the Deity-worshiper

“One, who chants the Holy Name less than one hundred thousand times a day, is considered

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

Sri Purusottam Matha , Puri

1st May, 1929

Dearest—

I had received your graceful letter a few days back. However, in course of services, I could
not reply timely. Recently, I have received your letter dated 13. 01. 36 . I am doing good, by the
mercy of the Supreme Lord. There has not been any health related problems after arriving at Sri
Purusottam Ksetra (Puri). I wish to stay here until the Snanyatra festival in Jaistha.

You can worship the deities with the initiation mantras if you want to, or else, you can
daily chant each of the Mantras and the Gayatris twelve times, during Tri-sandha (the three sacred
junctions of the day). If no mental disturbance is noticeable during chanting the mantras, then one
should know that japa is going on nicely.

Now that you have arranged for the service of Sri Sri Lakshmi Narayan Jiu and Sri
Banalinga in your friend *** Mahasay’s house and Their worship is going on nicely, you do not
need to worry much about this matter. When you will again be accepting the Deities, then Their
proper worship will start. It is not possible to write elaborate instructions on all these matters in
the letter. But please learn that, our previous Acharya Sri Viswanath Chakravarti Thakur has
prayed to Mahadeva in this way –

“vrndavanavani-pate jaya soma soma-

maule sanandana-sanatana-naradedya
gopesvara vraja-vilasi-yuganghri-padme
pritim prayaccha nitaram nirupadhim me1”

If one sees Rudra as being separate from Lord Vishnu, then one has to consider Him a
Vaishnava. Otherwise, if one wants to see Him as Gunavatara (an incarnation of qualities of
Lord Vishnu), He is perceived as an empowered demigod. In the transcendental body of Lord
Vishnu, there is no possibility of transformation. However, there is association of material
qualities in the pastimes of Sambhu (Shiva) and hence, distinction with Lord Vishnu
automatically arrives in this context.

Brahma Gayatri, Sri Guru Gayatri, Sri Gaura Gayatri and Kama Gayatri, the sacred
chants in Gaudiya Vaishnava Lineage, should be glorified by means of chanting. Please try to
gradually increase the chanting of the Holy Name to one hundred thousand Names per day. One,
who chants the Holy Name less than one hundred thousand times a day, is considered fallen.
Hence, please try to attentively chant the Holy Name without fail. Please arrange for water, Tulsi
(holy basil leaves), Naivedya (food offering), Dhup (incense) and Dip (ghee / oil lamp) for
offering at the time of deity worship. I have learned that you will be engaged in your work there
until the month of Kartik. However, you may also get permission to leave before that, if the Lord
desires.

You can perform service to Lord Sri Hari, staying wherever you desire. We can discuss
this matter gradually. We are extremely pleased observing your firm attachment to the Supreme
Lord. That’s how we have been able to understand that the Lord has unlimited mercy on you, or
else it is not possible to reject one’s previous prejudices so fast.

Your ever well-wisher

Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.

The kind of offense, that you have mentioned in your last letter, is not an intented

engaged in the service of Supreme Lord. Therefore, I know that, unlike other worldly persons,
you will remain unaffected by any inconveniences. I also know that Sri Bhagavan is the ultimate
authority of forgiving offenses. He does not accept any offenses in sincere services performed
towards Him. Please bless me that, being surrendered, I may remain ever-anxious to serve.

Most respected,-

I am very glad to receive your letter, dated 5th May, full of grace. My proficiency in
languages is limited. Therefore, I cannot fully express my sincerest gratitude to you. But I am
relishing great happiness remembering your causeless mercy.

You are always the place of refuge for the Gaudiya devotees. Especially, I am not worthy
of such great affection you have towards an insignificant soul like me, as I do not possess such
propensity to serve Sri Bhagavan, the Supreme Lord. You are so spontaneously absorbed in the
mercy of Supreme Lord that, if we receive even a drop of blessings from such a great heart, then
certainly we can improve. You are the well-wisher of the Harijanas (the devotees of Lord Sri

With blessings,

I have received your news through the letter dated 22nd Baisakh. This material world is
temporary, no one has come here to live forever. Wherever the Supreme Lord keeps someone at
whatever time, one should stay there with a cheerful face and accept the reward or punishment of
the Supreme Lord. The Lord’s reward or punishment are both intended for one’s benefit. We
welcome the rewards awarded to us by the Lord’s illusory energy where as His punishments
trouble us in several ways. Since the punishments of maya are intended so that we can receive
the grace of the Supreme Lord, the devotees do not even disregard them. They gladly accept
them to be the mercy of the Supreme Lord, with a cheerful face and with utmost tolerance.
Those who are unable to understand that the worldly inconveniences and troubles are just
the Lord’s mercy, try to repeatedly seek material benefits, mundane happiness, etc
eventually failing in their endeavors.

Sri Chandana-Yatra Mahotsava is on the next Saturday, 20th Baisakh. During this
summer month, water pastimes of Sri Radha-Madanmohana are taken place at Narendra
Sarovara. At this time, different pilgrims assemble in Sri Ksetra and get respite from different
worldly sufferings.

Please get relieved of the worldly deficits by arriving at Sri Purusottama Ksetra and by
listening to discourses on the topics of Lord Shri Hari. Our material scarcities cannot remain at
all, if we participate in the service during the festivals, in the association of those who serve the
Supreme Lord. The instruction of the saints, the scriptures and the Supreme Lord is to always
remain engaged in the hearing and chanting of the glorifications of Lord Shri Hari.

I am good, by the mercy of Sri Jagannathdeva. I have received the special opportunity of
chanting Sri Harinama all the time. As soon as you can, please liberate yourself from the material
miseries by arriving at Sri Purusottam Matha.

While the garden of Sriman Mahaprabhu was expected to prosper, you all have
distributed those lands. That land was particularly collected and included within the Matha
property to cultivate it well for Mahaprabhu’s service, especially during the rainy season. But
now, you all have excluded that from the Matha property. After a few days, you all will contract

The motor car which had ascended Shillong hill and Cherapunji has recently arrived here
for the service of Sri Purusottam Matha , i.e, it has descended 5000 ft. The annual festival of Sri
Kshetra (Puri) has started from the time of Sri Chandan Yatra this year. *** and *** are
preaching in the suburbs of Orissa. Aprakrita prabhu and Vana Maharaj are residing here. This
time, the house hosting Sri Purusottam Matha is quite large and centrally located. The edifice is
named ‘Porakuthi’. Sri Purusottam Matha will remain here for a year and the glories of Sri
Gaura will be spread from Purusottam Ksetra (Puri) of Utkala (Orissa). The editor and secretary
of the magazine ‘Gaudiya’ are also present here.

My beloved –

I have received your letter dated 12th May. The day before yesterday, we have received
the donation that you have sent. I am extremely pleased to hear that the festival of Sri Chaitanya
Gaudiya Matha has been nicely completed with your service endeavours. I am thinking, when
will the Lord of our lives, Sri Gaura, being persuaded by our intense service efforts, will
manifest Himself in His Deity form in Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Matha . The Deities of Sri
Chaitanya Gaudiya Matha – Sri Gandharvika-Giridhara Sri Radha-Ramana-Deva are not the
Deities served by the Nimbarka sampradayas. Therefore, the appearance of Sri Gaurasundara is
extremely essential here.

My dear Gaurgunananda Brahmachary,

Yours (letter) of the 13th instant is to hand… I am very glad to receive Madhwamunidas,
which I wish to go through and will hand you over for safe custody…

I am really astonished to find that K*** Babu is now busy to perform Smarta
Sraddha for the benefit of his villagers... Probably, you understood that I have not given this
sort of advice. His long absence from Gaudiya Matha means a check of the rise of the

from the Matha for such a long time…

My dear K*** Babu,

Your favour of the 18th is just received along with S**’s letter. You have written that by
your Sva-karma-phala (the consequence of fruitive activities), you have to undergo great
troubles of all varieties and you are compelled to submit to them, but I think you could have
avoided those things if you had a mind to do so. To some extent, you preferred to elongate
your head in the guillotine. Of course, whatever happens, that should be classed as Holy
Providential wishes. As you do not want to be disturbed with these I must stop here now.

I have received two or three of your earlier letters and today I have received another
letter... Wherever there is light, there will be some darkness. Wherever there is piousness, there
is a necessity of the presence of some sort of impiety. I am glad to know that *** Brahmachari

a requirement of panditya, erudition. If there is no sorrow, then one cannot properly realize the

for that.

Here, the festival is going on quite auspiciously. The repair of the Alalnath Temple has
begun. Please keep sending us news of all of your spiritual well-being. Unless and until you are
able to introduce the topics of Sri Hari inside the ears of the people continuously for
twenty-four praharas or time-divisions, the eight-prahar kirtanas of the frivolous persons
will go on.

My dear Aprakrita Prabhu,

Gaurgunananda’s note of yesterday disclosed your unsuccessful attempt of

proselytizing K*** Babu in his present movement. Your letter of the 27th reached me today
which corroborates the same fact. However, you have done your duty to save a drowning
friend, who does not demand such uncalled for advice from you. The interpretations and
explanations offered by him have no value, i.e., your interpretation was necessary before he
launched in a wrong direction. Had that been the case, he might have consulted me, but he cared
little to hold any counsel with us during his stay at ‘Saram’. I predicted the same, long
before, to you before you attempted for it. He had already reported his case to be compared
to that of one ‘swakarmaphalabhuk puman’. He has preferred to run into an ordinary cause
instead of saving himself from the inglorious acts.

Please always be very careful to maintain the piousness and purity, so that Sri Dhama
Mayapur does not get blended with the fake, artificially-established Mayapur. Do not get bound
by the mundane object of senses, like prakrita sahajiyas, the cheap pseudo devotees. ... In Sri
Chaitanya Charitamrita, it is stated that, “Vaishnava vidveshir nama -, ‘pashandi Hindu’, ara
Vaishnava ganera nama- ‘visuddha Hindu’1. ” The atheistic pashandi Hindus are always hostile
to the Vaishnavas. One should not pay any heed to that. There is absolutely no evil deed that the
pashandi Hindus… cannot perform. Therefore, the servants of Sri Hari should not increase a few
small-time enemies. In East Bengal, such vile persons are known as musk-rats.

My dear—

Your elaborate letter dated 5th June has been received. Please keep continuing the
preaching activities in our Delhi branch. From time to time, it is necessary to go to Shimla and
Kurukshetra. The preaching will be good in Delhi if you stay there. *** is not willing to come to
Delhi, rather, especially he intends to chant japa in his Tulsi mala, residing in a secluded place.
Furthermore, *** sampradaya has held the nirjan-bhajan-anandi, solely interested in his own
spiritual welfare, to stay permanently with them. In this situation, I do not know how successful
our earnest requests and polite appeals would be. However, please write to *** prabhu on my
behalf that, I do not think residing in a secluded place is apt for a person like him. Jadya,
idleness, and Krishnanusilan, rendering devotional service to Lord Sri Krishna are different. If
Sri Mahaprabhu desires, the mundane thoughts of the residents of Delhi will be ruined. On the
contrary, their evil-thoughts and conceptions will be aggravated, if He wishes so. So, we have
nothing to say. If you can keep this branch in existence, then some day or the other, the mundane
thoughts of the atheists and impious persons will be destroyed. Please convey our cordial thanks
to Ray Saheb. He is greatly affectionate towards us. That’s why he takes so much care of you all.

With due respect –

I have been informed about your worldly troubles from your letter dated 15th Ashadh.
While travelling on the path of karma (fruitive activities), sometimes miseries and sometimes
happiness come to trouble us. As soon as there is some worldly inconvenience, Bhagavan (the
Supreme Lord), gives the opportunity to serve, He Himself acting as the guardian. Srimad
Bhagavat Gita states,

“Chatur-vidha bhajante mam janah sukrtino 'rjuna |

Arto jijnasur artharthi jnani ca bharatarsabha1 ||”

Hence, taking shelter of the service of Sri Bhagavan is, in my opinion, one’s sole
responsibility in this or any situation.

The Supreme Lord has placed different kinds of inconveniences in the material world in
order to test us. This is for our own benefit. Knowing for certain that these inconveniences are
beneficial for us, we should indulge in His service. Those, who serve the Supreme Lord, are indeed
blessed. Amidst all problems, please continue to listen, chant and remember the topics of Sri
Bhagavan. I do not have any other request.

The servant of the devotees of Sri Hari,

Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.

I received your news today in Krishnanagar, through the card dated 7.7.29. I have not
departed for Kolkata yesterday or even today because of the Ashlesha and Magha Nakshatras –
two inauspicious lunar mansions. I have decided to reach Kolkata tomorrow at 3 pm. Previously,
I have already informed you about the festival in Godrum Dvipa, one of the nine islands in
Navadwipa.

From a letter written by Aprakrita prabhu to Vasudeva from Kolkata, I came to know that
Tirtha, Vana, Dasarathi and Sarvesvara have left for Cuttack to begin the initial services. I am
glad to know that you all have returned after performing Gundicha Marjana, the washing and
cleansing of the Gundicha Temple in Puri.

We have to always give instructions to Ni*** so that he always performs devotional

service to Lord Sri Hari with great enthusiasm, while performing his own duties. I have met and
conversed with Bh***. He was distrusting you and T***, being mentally restless at the words of
Ra*** and some other inexperienced, neophyte and foolish, so-called brahmacharis. I have
advised him to restore his beliefs and respects in all of you. He has returned to the Gaudiya
Matha , but I do not know of his opinion now. In short, we should be always careful that
people do not develop any misunderstanding about our ideal characters. Those with tender
faith are in danger, at each and every step. They do not have any deep insights, but always
judge based on the external appearances.

We have received your letter sent to Sri *** dated 15.10.29. We have arrived at Faizabad
via Varanasi the day before yesterday. Seven devotees including *** have departed for Sri
Gaudiya Matha yesterday. Perhaps, they have reached there by today. Here, we seven are
staying in the shelter of Amulya Babu. I wish to travel to Naimisaranya after a week in order to
attend the grand festival there. Since yesterday, it has been getting colder here, but in the day, it
is still quite warm. I have not yet been able to decide whether I will be able to travel to Delhi this
time.

I hope you are performing your bhajana, devotional services, in the ecstasy of chanting
the Holy Name. The proper ettiquette is that, for their day-to-day purposes, one should start the
letter by glorification or offering obeisances. It is not appropriate to address someone by writing
the Hare Krishna Mahamantra at the top of the letter. The writer may develop the feeling and
pride, that he is the advisor of Mahamantra, by writing so. However, among prakrita sahajiyas,
the mundane pseudo-devotees, there is a custom of using the words “Radhe Radhe” to respect
the indication of asraya-jatiya bhagavatta, the ultimate shelter of devotion. The poets are also
seen to compose different imaginary rhymes for this.

Chaitanya Matha as well… I have heard that the group of people, averse to Lord Sri Hari, have
gained recognition from their sympathesizers and like-minded people. Therefore, while wishing
their welfare, we should engage in the loving, devotional service of Lord Sri Hari. Residing on
the banks of Sri Kunda is only achieved by those who are extremely fortunate. Since a

My dear –

It has been decided that in Sri Dhama Mayapur, the exhibition ‘Sri Gaudiya-Bhagavat-
Pradarshani’ will be opened from the 3rd of this coming February, i.e., the appearance day of
Srimati Vishnupriya Devi. In this exhibition, all the significant matters related to the path of
bhakti will be included. The appearance day festival of Sri Vishnupriya Devi is in three months
from now. This exhibition will take place for forty days – from Vasanta (Maghi) Panchami
(January/February) to Phalguni Purnima (February/March).

In this exhibition :

(1) Various devotional scriptures, texts written by our acharyas, etc. will be displayed.

(2) All the Vishnu temples and sacred places in India as well as the places visited by
Mahaprabhu, Nityananda Prabhu and Gaudiya devotees will be shown.
(3) A large map, projected on a plane, containing the indications of all the holy places of India
and those marked by Mahaprabhu’s lotus feet, will be prepared.

(4) Figures depicting different topics of Vaishnava society (caricatures, do’s and don’ts) will be
demonstrated through clay modeling.

(5) (a) Different decorating items of the deities, (b) Different types of mridanga, kartal, jhanjhar
and other musical instruments, (c) Different elements required for deity worship, (d) Diverse
varieties of intricately carved and designed flags, khunti (paddle), ashasota (sceptre), hand-fan
etc, (e) Asana (seat), Singhasana (the seat of the Deity), Ratha (chariot), (f) Different kinds of
garlands, flowers, collection of food items, etc. will be exhibited.

(6) Different Deity forms and Shaligrama.

(7) Dry food items dear to Lord Krishna, offered in different places (should not be stale),
Raghaver Jhali, bags of Raghava.

I think M*** will perhaps take the responsibility of providing electric light to Sri
Chaitanya Matha . People from Minerva Nursery and Kunjababu have taken the responsibility of
the flower garden decorations.

Diverse varieties of decorations, used in the processions, need to be collected from Dhaka
for displaying those in the exhibition for two months…In Dhaka, there is an abundance of
decorative items, clothing, ingredients of Deity-worship and different musical instruments.
Please try to collect those as much as possible from now on. The items need to be displayed only
for two months in the exhibition. Based on the qualities of the people, certificates of honor as
well as a few medals made of gold and silver will be awarded, according to the distinctions -
general, internediate and excellent. It is necessary to display a few large utensils, made of brass
(like large cooking pots with lids), that are usable during the festivals. Su*** will be going to
Dhaka after a few days. Please try to see, from where and from whom, these things can be
collected, and to what extent. It is enough to get one variety of a single item from each person.
Not everyone is fortunate enough to observe the Janmashtami procession in Dhaka. So, an
instance of Janmashtami processions of Dhaka must be shown in Navadwip.

67. Bad association should always be given up

“Kali Maharaj takes different forms and disguises himself as Vaishnava to degrade the people”

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

Sri Gaudiya Matha , Kolkata

English calendar - 07.05.30

***
Sri Chaitanya Deva has instructed that the householder women and devotees should also
be engaged in service of the Supreme Lord in their houses with their body, mind, and soul
(implying that, they should not be engrossed in material welfare, rather, should always perform
Hari bhajan). Without serving Sri Hari, one gets entangled in Maya, the illusory potency. As
a result, one becomes absorbed in objects other than Krishna.

The question which has been asked regarding whether one can accept the remnants of a
loin-cloth dressed follower of the Sakhi-bheki sect (a deviant Vaishnava sect where devotees
often physically dress themselves as Gopi), is like asking “Who is the father of Sita” after
reading the entire Ramayana. One should not even see or converse with loin-cloth dressed,
impious hypocrites and followers of Kalnemi, who disguised himself as a sage to kill Hanuman.
What to speak of accepting their remnants, if one offers them one’s own remnants, then fall-
down is inevitable. Kali Maharaj takes different forms and disguises himself as Vaishnava to
degrade the people. Residing in sacred places and following the religious principles with the
ulterior motive of committing sinful activities in the future, in the name of religion, is not
acceptable at all. That is why the associates of Supreme Lord including Sri Rupa Goswami and
Sri Sanatan Goswami, only engaged in devotional service to Supreme Lord, restraining their
manifested pastimes, which might otherwise seem mundane to some. Or else the religious
misconduct of the hypocrites will take the conditioned souls to an even far more conditioned
position. Those who have not awakened their propensity to serve the Supreme Lord, by
staying under the shelter of a self-realized soul, should not be associated with, however
pleasing their association may seem. All these concepts will automatically arise in your heart if
you read and discuss the conversation and conduct of Sri Chaitanya in dealing with the wife of
Parameshwari Modak in Nilachala.

Your ever well-wisher

My dear –

... We deeply appreciate and fully support your service of distributing the mercy of Sri
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Assam. Especially, you have received the Nama, the Holy Name and
the initiation Mantras. As a result, remembering the instructions of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu,
please realize the meaning of the verse ‘Amar ajnay guru haiya taro ei desh 1’. As a result, you
will not have to suffer the miseries of material waves and Sri Chaitanyadeva will empower you
with enormous strength…

… Please regularly, and without interruption, discuss in detail the articles published in
the daily newspaper, ‘Nadiya Prakash’, by splitting it into shorter paragraphs. Without the rise of
devotion towards the Supreme Lord, the ‘Provincial Spirit’ will not give up our association. We
have noticed that in all countries and all societies. The expansion of Sri Gauranga’s followers
i.e., preaching of the pure devotional mood in Assam is only possible for you.

You have discussed the verse “Nishkinchanasya Bhagavad-bhajan-unmukhasya 2 ”.

Therefore, understanding the substance of the verse, you should always remain surrendered unto
the service of the Supreme Lord. Obviously I do not need to explain this to you in detail. All
these contexts are properly explained in Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita. As you are discussing
those topics, please also bring those into your own conduct. We study the verses “Kama
Krodha chaya jane, laiya phire nana sthane..3 ” and offer our obeisances unto the lotus feet of
Sri Narottama Dasa Thakura Mahasaya. Inspite of that, our misfortune does not let us engage in
service of the Supreme Lord, rather, leads us to accept misconceptions. Please know for certain
that the mercy of Sri Guru and Vaishnavas is our only hope.

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

3rd Sravana, 1337
19th July, 1930

My dear –

… I have received news through your card dated 16.07.30. Those who are adverse to
Lord Sri Hari are naturally, by their material faults, inclined towards opposing the dear devotees
of the Lord and are intoxicated by indecent, vicious, barbaric activities. For them, the scriptures
inform us about the arrangement of “pashunam laguro yatha” – they are punished exactly in the
same way the animals are physically punished with sticks. If these atheistic, impious persons are
not punished, then their animalistic tendencies keep increasing more and more. Though Sriman
*** had externally avoided punishing the wrong-doers, he had exhibited a nature of indifference
towards them, impelled by his simple, innocent nature. But this kind of indifference only gives
significant indulgence to such atheistic behaviours. If an innocent person remains silent even
after noticing that some unscrupulous persons are being envious towards the Vaishnavas, then
the wrath of Maya, the illusory energy of the Lord, has to be faced even more. By the desire of
the Supreme Lord, he can act as a neutral witness, or else he would fall into the politics of the
parties.

This person should essentially receive special punishment, because he has performed
extremely abominable activities like Madhai. B*** prabhu will not be harmed due to this. But
the offender has no way of deliverence from suffering the hellish miseries for many births,
falling into the clutches of inauspiciousness. Not only has he attacked the Vaishnava with his
cruel words, but has also physically attacked another Vaishnava! As a result of all these sinful
activities, he will attain extremely inferior birth. Even if *** prabhu and N*** prabhu forgives
this miscreant, Sudarshan Chakra, the spinning disk-like weapon of the Supreme Lord, will
make him atone for birth after birth. But if he receives punishment now, his sins will reduce.
Receiving such punishment is actually beneficial for him and this will relieve him to some
extent in future from the excessive sufferings of Kumbhipaka Naraka, the part of the hell
where sinners are tormented by roasting them in fire. And if he is not punished now, later he
will suffer even more.

71. Sat-tattva and Pancha-tattva

“Gurutattva is non-different from Krishna, who manifests Himself in these five tattvas”

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

Sri Ekayan Matha , Krishnanagar

8th Sravana, 1337
24th July, 1930

My dear –

…I have received your letter dated 22nd July. The special characteristics of the six
elements of truth in “Vande Gurun…1” and the five elements of truth in “Pancha-tattva-
atmakam2 ” center around Gurutattva – the principle of Sri Guru, the spiritual master. Except Sri
Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, anyone among these four elements can be regarded as Guru,
like, Sri Nityananda Prabhu was the spiritual master of Sri Vrindavan Das Thakur, Sri Advaita
Prabhu – the spiritual master of Sri Yadunandana Acharya, Sri Gadadhara Pandita – the spiritual
master of Sri Achyutananda Prabhu and Srivasa Pandit is the spiritual master of all the pure
devotees. Of all these four Gurus or Prabhu-tattva, the sole manifestation of Visaya, the object of
worship, is Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Therefore, there is no mutual distinction
between Pancha-tattva (the five elements of truth) and Sat-tattva (the six elements of truth).
Gurutattva is non-different from Krishna, who manifests Himself in these five tattvas. He
is undivided, uninterrupted and one without a second. But, established in Achintya-bheda-abheda
(the concept of inconceivable oneness and difference), Sri Guru appears different and
simultaneously non-different from Krishna. The special feature of ‘Sri Guru’ is directly
manifested from Krishna, who is the combination of five truths. However, from the consideration
of our shelter Sri Guru, the same Krishna appears as the object of worship. So, in the perception
of servant of Sri Guru, Guru is non-different from Krishna. But at the same time, there is
no need to reject the conception that, in the form of Ashraya-tattva or the abode of divine
love, Sri Gurudeva is the worshiper of Sri Krishna. That is eternal.

The servant of the Harijanas, the devotess of Lord Sri Hari,

Sri Siddhanta Saraswati

With great respect, this is my kind notification to you—

I have received news through your letter dated 20th September. You have returned to Sri
Prayaga Kshetra due to your health problems. There was no harm in it. But there has been some
impediment in the listening of Harikatha – the topics of Lord Sri Hari. Wherever there is
Harikatha, that is tirtha, a holy place. The tirtha, where there is lack of Hari-Nama, does not help
in increasing the eagerness to serve, though it can enhance our material happiness. We are in
sheer poverty, residing in this realm of Maya, the illusory potency of the Supreme Lord, being
deprived of Krishna-bhakti, the devotional service to Sri Krishna, births after births. Therefore,
being bereft of the main treasure of the soul – the Visaya-vigraha, Supreme Object of worship,
our physical and mental weakness is increasing day by day. Being afflicted in this famine of
Harikatha, we consider the desire for material happiness as the most enjoyable. Sri Rupa
Goswami prabhu has said, -

syat krsna-nama-caritadi-sitapy avidya-

pittopatapta-rasanasya na rocika nu |
kintv adarad anudinam khalu saiva justa
svadvi kramad bhavati tad-gada-mula-hantri1

We take mundane pleasure in sense gratification. But we have forgotten the beauty and
elegance of the toe-nails of Sri Krishna – which is the most relishable among all relishable
objects and hence we are considering substances other than Krishna as our object of service.
This accumulation of material objects unrelated to Krishna is our main disease. In this state,
the Holy Names of Sri Hari, His Eternal Form, Transcendental Qualities, Eternal Associates and
His Divine Pastimes seem very bitter and unpleasant to us. But the same thing, when
continuously used as a medicine, like sugar candies used in treating liver problems, will
gradually diminish the disease of unpleasantness in Sri Krishna’s service. Then, the
transcendental sweetness of the Holy Name of Sri Krishna will spontaneously manifest Himself
and engage us in the service of the transcendental Supreme Object with our spiritualized senses.
Please bless me. When will that day arrive in my life, when, giving up all the objects of sense
gratification, I will reach Vrindavan? Will we be able to sing ? –

jivana-samapti-kale koribo bhajana,

What more can I say than this? Please arrive here during the festival before 5th of
October, to attend the programmes in 3rd and 4th of October. I will talk to you more in person.

Sri Harijana-kinkara, the servants of the Lord’s devotees,

akinchana, having no material possession,

Sri Siddhanta Saraswati.

(FOOTNOTE:
1
The holy name, character, pastimes and activities of Krishna are all transcendentally sweet like
sugar candy. Although the tongue of one afflicted by the jaundice of avidya, ignorance, cannot
taste anything sweet, it is wonderful that simply by carefully chanting these sweet Names
everyday, a natural relish awakens within his tongue, and his disease is gradually destroyed at
the root.
2
A wise, experienced man will never say: 'At the end of my life I will woship God, but now I
will enjoy happiness in family life'-- for he knows that this body is tottering and unstable, about
to drop at any second. Death certainly must come, either today or in about hundred years, so
don't live so carefree, brothers! Immediately begin worshiping the lotus feet of Krsna, for ther is
no fixed certainty of this life. One thinks: 'After spending my worldly life I shall go to
Vrndavana, but to purify myself of the three debts I am endeavoring very hard now'. This type of
idea is not the ultimate goal of life. By the influence of such a nonsensical desire, your life will
depart in the end without your ever having worshiped the lotus feet of -dina-bandhu-, the
dearmost Friend of the fallen. If you want the topmost auspiciousness, then just sing always the
name of Krsna whether you live at home or in the forest. All these other arguments described
here are simply aimless excuses.
3
This flickering life is slowly drifting away, flowing onward into the ocean of time. So many
days have gone by; more will not come, so now I am wondering what is the means to
get You dear Lord Krsna! Oh Lord! I know that You are the dear most friend of the fallen souls.
Indeed You are a veritable ocean of compassion. I am most unfortunate, backward and
inexperienced, for I do not understand even a tiny fraction of devotion. But by virtue
of Your own good qualities, Oh Lord, make me Your very own beloved and thus put an end to
all of my worldly afflictions. Giving me a spiritual body within the transcendental realm
of Vrndavana, bestow upon me the nectar of Your service. Thus I will become madly intoxicated
with pure love by drinking the nectar of such service. Just hear this song about Your own divine
qualities. Please engage me in rendering confidential services within the circle of the divine
Rasa-mandala. Thus Bhaktivinoda, the unworthy maidservant of Sri Lalita Sakhi, is catching
hold of Your feet under her guidance )

73. Inexperience and shallowness of those who are hankering for name and fame, being
averse to Sri Hari

This is my notification with due respect -

… Lord Gaurasundara had removed the lamentation of the bereaved devotees over the
kidnapping of Maya-Sita, the illusory duplicate of Goddess Sita, by Ravana, always craving for
name, fame and prestige. By the desire of the same Lord Sri Visvambhara (another name of
Sriman Mahaprabhu), the averse community has invited this tandava-nritya, destructive vigorous
dance. Their inexperience and shallowness will find its way in the form of booklets and lectures
from door to door of each and every person and the highest philosophical conclusion of
Achintya-bhedabheda Tattva will enhance the delight and joy of the devotees engaged in loving
devotional service of Lord Shri Krishna.
Please do not consider yourself to be strengthened by remaining indifferent to the spotless,
serene concept of fundamental religion of the soul, as preached by the followers of Sri Rupa
Goswami and embracing the speculative knowledge of the imperfect, mundane philosophers like
Martin, Ceyard, Parker etc. And, hence, instead of knowing the mundane love of birds and
animals, as practised by the cheap pseudo-devotees, to be a perverted abominable distortion of
the divine love of Sri Radha Govinda, do not consider this to be just a shadow of the divine love
that has descended to the material world. The mundane cheap pseudo-devotion is not a pure
devotional concept, rather just some unrestrained, perverse activities, situated far away from
pure, unadulterated divine love. On the contrary, rescuing the groups, indicated in the verse “sva-
laangulenaatititarti sindhum”, from being drowned by the weak and dry arguments of Mayavada
and other deliberations opposing bhakti, is a special instance of the compassion of Sri Gaudiya
Matha towards other living entities.
If you take some time to carefully and attentively read the contents of the cornerstone of
Sri Chaitanya Matha and Sri Gaudiya Matha, then you will be able to realize the real motive of
the preaching of Sri Gaudiya Math and thereby will get relieved from the clutches of offenses at
the feet of Sri Guru and Vaishnavas, incurred due to the defects of bhrama (inadvertent
mistakes), pramada (confusion or illusion), vipralipsa (cheating tendency) and karanapatava
(imperfection of perception and senses). Only then will you be able to fully join in Sri Gaudiya
Matha and therefore relish a drop of the nectarine ocean of devotion.
Please be assured that the transcendental desire of Shri Gaurasundara will be fulfilled and
propagated by more capable and even the most capable persons through the daily newspaper
‘Nadiya Prakasha’. Not only that, the thunder-like strong and uncompromising writings of the
publication team of the ‘Gaudiya’ magazine, who have acquired unlimited, unequalled power
from the lotus-feet of Sri Nityananda prabhu, will uproot and shatter the mountain-like fake
arrogance of the predantic Apyaya Dikshita - the weak writer of ‘Parimala’ who was utterly
confused with the Shaiva-Visistadvaita philosophy. While showing respect to the wise
conclusions of the learned persons of Sri Vallabha Sampradaya including Purusottama Maharaja,
we will prove the insignificance of the theory of powerless, feeble, indistinct Brahman as
propagated by the followers of Kevaladvaita philosophy. We will follow the process of
continuous, uninterrupted Hari-kirtana, without desiring for name and fame, while offering
respect to everyone, in a humble state of mind, thinking ourselves lower than the straw and being
tolerant as a tree, as instructed by Sri Gaurasundara. Carrying the holy shoes of the devotees who
practise this, we will remove the inefficiencies of the deceptive view-points of the unwise,
inconsiderate communities including the anyabhilasis (mundane perople with material desires
unrelated to Lord Sri Krishna), karmis (those inclined towards fruitive activities), yogis (those
desiring for material mystic power) and nirbheda-jnanis (the impersonalists inclined towards
liberation). Due to some temporarily added impurities, there has been a rise of fake and tasteless
pseudo-sentiments - we will rectify all these wastes that have accumulated in the world. In order
to be able to perform all this service, we are begging for the mercy of everyone.
Please know that the mendicant monks of Sri Gaudiya Matha are not reluctant to beg and
collect food items from you. For seven more days, the sessions of Transcendental Assembly on
Vedic conclusion will be held in Gaudiya Matha. You will be greatly benefitted if you can join
this assembly as well… By attending this assembly and by listening to Sri Hari-kirtan without
any deceit in your heart, you will be able to achieve proper realization, as an extra-ordinary result
of following the prescribed Vedic principles, in your remorseful heart, hardened by logic and dry
arguments. Then you will be able to understand the real meaning of the verse “trinadapi
sunichena...”

With blessings and affection—

I have received news through your letter dated 28th . The astakaliya lila, eight-fold
daily pastimes, that you have heard about, from the Vaishnavas in Vrindavan, is certainly
adorable without any doubt, but not the way this is conceptualized, in a state full of anarthas
(unfavourable habits). By continuously chanting the Holy Name of Sri Hari, a person comes to
know subject matters of the identity of his own self. When these anarthas, unwanted qualities,
are removed, then only the swarupa or original identity becomes manifested. As a result of the
awakening of one’s swarupa, the eternal realization regarding this arrives spontaneously, without
any artificial effort. No one can deceitfully teach or determine that for others in reality. However,
the realization that one attains by chanting plenty of Harinama without duplicity in the heart,
should be informed to the lotus feet of the spiritual master, and elevated saintly persons, to have
those conceptions purified and properly confirmed by them. That is the identity of 11
characteristics of one’s swarupa. In different places, many unwise, so-called gurus, artificially
impose those topics on unworthy practitioners of bhakti. But that is not the real identity of siddhi
– the state of utmost perfection. One who attains siddhi of his swarupa becomes automatically
acquainted with all those identities. Sri Gurudeva just helps one to spiritually advance in these
matters. I do not have much more to disclose on this topic. Based on one’s advancement in
devotional perfection, gradually, all these things are spontaneously revealed in the heart of a
genuine, sincere devotee.

Ever well-wisher,
Sri Siddhanta Saraswati

75. The destiny of one who constructs a temple for Lord Vishnu

“Yama and his servants are the order carriers of the servants of the Lord”

All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga

Sri Chaitanya Matha
24th Agrahayan, 1337

4 Narayana, 444 Gaurabda

My dear –

… An article was published in the magazine ‘Gaudiya’ depicting that Jagabandhu Babu
was protected from Yamaraja, the demigod of death, for a few days. The conclusive statement is
not that when he left the world later, he was taken by Yamaraja. The scriptures indicate that
those, who construct a Vishnu Temple, do not reach the doors of Yamaraja’s abode like Ajamila,
rather are taken by Vishnudutas, the servants of Lord Vishnu, to Vaikunthaloka, the abode of
Lord Vishnu. Certainly, the sannyasis and brahmacharis of the matha have also sent Srila
Jagabandhu to Vaikuntha, carrying him on their shoulders.
The Chandogya Upanishad says, - “ Those who have acquired true knowledge of the
Supreme Lord and attained the propensity to serve Him before leaving the material world, are
Brahmajna, the knower of Brahman. They are taken to Brahmapura – the abode of Brahman.
Those, who do not help or co-operate to build the temple of the Supreme Lord, are oppressed by
Yamaraja.” Therefore, the devotee of the Lord is revered by Yama. The devotees of the Supreme
Lord always perform service to Lord Sri Hari, abandoning Karmakanda, the fruitful activities.
Yama has influence in this material world and the lower hellish planets including Naraka. Yama
and his servants are the order carriers of the servants of the Lord.

Ever wellwisher
Sri Siddhanta Saraswati
INTRODUCTORY MATERIALS

Publisher’s Preface

The dreadful evil Kaliyuga has taken complete control of today’s materialistic society. Having
almost no way of saving themselves from the clutches of this wicked Kali, the conditioned souls
are suffering unbearable pangs of distress in this endless ocean of miseries. The shrewd Kali is
so audacious that he has extended his arms now with an aim of contaminating the devotees and
the saint communities. As a result, instead of endeavouring to cleanse the mirror of their heart,
they are getting devoured by the impenetrable darkness of ignorance.

In order to thwart the oppression of Kali, the founder Acharya of the world-renowned Sri
Chaitanya Matha and its branches, Om Vishnupada Nityalila Pravista 108 Sri Sri
Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Prabhupada, had appeared as a blazing ball of fire in the
mid-day Gaudiya sky with the treasure of pure devotion and mood of firm renunciation, under
the instruction and mercy of the inconceivable Supreme Lord Sri Krishna - the one without a
second and Lord of the puranas as well as Srimati Radha Thakurani - the embodiment of divine
love. Before this, the service of preparing the background was skillfully completed by Srila
Sacchidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakur. Srila Prabhupada, through his extra-ordinary conduct and
unparalleled examplary behaviour, has firmly established the pillars of pure devotion, by
destroying the dry arguments, unauthorized conclusions and sly deceptions of maya - the illusory
potency of the Lord, thereby providing the living entities with a great medicine to combat maya -
which will serve as their sole everlasting support throughout the journey of life. But the wise and
learned saintly persons who were preserving the unadulterated Gaudiya ideology and the
conclusions of pure devotional service have gradually left the world. Hence, the next generation
is slowly moving towards further degradation. In such a critical juncture, the ever-charming and
powerful words of Srila Prabhupad can certainly direct the entire devotional community towards
the real path of devotion and thereby liberate them from the tight bindings of Maya, which is
otherwise impossible to overcome. Therefore indeed it is his words and instructions, which is our
object of meditation, and the most significant knowledge to be focused on. The center of all our
devotional service is to distribute his divine teachings. Those who will come forward to
participate in this valuable service, will surely be enormously benefitted.

By the unlimited mercy of our most beloved Gurumata Parivrajika Shrimati Jayshree Devi
Goswamini - the revered Acharyaa of Sree Guru Prapanna Ashrama, as well as the blessings of
all the saints, Vaishnavas and devotees, I am making an insignificant attempt to publish the
English translations of the collection of letters, known as ‘Prabhupada Patrasudha’ consisting of
the transcendental message of Sri Srila 108 Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Prabhupada.
Otherwise, how can I even think of taking such an impossible endeavour alone? It is not possible
for anyone of us to perform the service of preaching the devotional path alone. ‘Ekaki amara
nahi paya bala Harinama sankirtane’ - Especially for a foolish person as I am, it is never
possible to do so. And therefore, to fulfill this intense desire, the one who has assisted me the
most in this service is none other than my dearest godbrother and the recipient of special mercy
of Gurumata, Sri Paramananda Das. It is worth mentioning here about Paramananda Prabhu that,
despite residing in the distant foreign land of Canada and being occupied with his own
occupational duties, the way he is spending his days practising pure devotion and performing
sincere services of the Mission, though physically staying far away from the Mission, is
definitely worth appreciation. All the credits of translating these transcendental letters of Srila
Prabhupada to English goes to him. I sincerely hope that through the contents of this book, Srila
Prabhupada will again direct the living entities towards the right direction and will show the
proper path of devotion with dazzling bright light in these dark days of decandence of the saintly
community. Above all, I pray that may he gradually enchance the mood of surrender of this
unworthy soul towards his lotus feet.

All glories to Srila Prabhupad!

All glories to Srila Prabhuji!
All glories to Sri Sri Gurumata!
All glories to the saints and devotees!
And all glories to Sri Sri Guru Gauranga Radha Ballabh Jiu!

(All topics and conversations unrelated to Sri Krishna are just another kind of suffering. May I
never go where such conversations are held, but remain ever fixed in remembering your lotus
feet. Constantly, may I always sing your glories with a sweet voice and undistracted mind in the
association of the saintly persons.)

Your aspiring servant,

Sri Achyutananda Das
Binaya Krsna Prabhu’s preface

First of all I would like to offer pranams to my Gurudeva, Om Vishnupada Sri Srimad
Bhaktivedanta Narayan Goswami Maharaja, Sri Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja who has
brought the Vedic knowledge of Krishna consciousness to the whole world at large in the
English language, to my param-gurudeva Om Vishnupada Sri Srimad Bhaktipragyan Keshav
Goswami Maharaj, to Gurumata Parivrajika-acharyaa Srimati Jayshree Devi Goswamini and to
Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura, Srila Prabhupada himself, without whose mercy I
would never be able to attempt such a service.

When I was first asked by Sriman Paramananda prabhu to help with the English translation of
Jagadguru Om Vishnupada Sri Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura Srila Prabhupada’s
letters, I was very happy to be engaged in such a service. Then, when I got together with
Paramananda prabhu to begin helping edit the English, I was feeling very unqualified and
worried that I may inadvertently change any meanings of such a great transcendental scholar as
Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura. Having read the introduction of Sri Brahma-Samhita
by Subhananda prabhu :

“As per Srila Prabhupada's instructions regarding the publication of this volume,
Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati’s somewhat technical and sometimes difficult prose has been left
intact and virtually untouched. Fearing that any editorial (grammatical and stylistic) tampering
with Bhaktisiddhānta's text might result in inadvertent changes in meaning, Prabhupāda asked
that it be left as is, and the editors of this volume have complied with his wishes. Only
typographical errors have been corrected, capitalization has been standardized, Sanskrit terms in
devanāgarī script appearing within the English text have been transliterated, and already
transliterated terms have been adjusted to international standards.”

Being aware of the instruction of Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada that not one single
word of his Gurudeva Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakurashould be changed or it may
result in changing meanings, which is certainly something I would not want to do. Because I was
ordered by Srimati Gurumata to write a preface, I am doing my best to perform this service. The
only way possible that I can do this service is to beg mercy with fervent prayers from the core of
my heart to Srila Gurudeva, Srimati Gurumata and all guru-parampara, all Vaishnava devotees of
Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu - that ever were or ever will be, to shower their mercy upon me so
that I do not make mistakes. Also, I must beg for the mercy of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati
Goswami Thakura himself, to give me this blessing that there are no errors. I humbly request the
Vaishnava community to forgive me for any mistakes that I may have made due to my
conditioned nature. To conclude, in the words of my Gurudeva which he has written in the
Preface of ‘Sri Siksastakam’,

“ Being agrieved by the distress of others, may Sri Sachinandana Gaurahari and the most revered
spiritual master who is the direct embodiment of Lord’s mercy, be pleased and bestow upon us
the eligibility to serve their innermost heart’s desire - This is the sole heartfelt prayer at their
Lotus-feet.”
Begging for the mercy of Sri Guru and Vaishnavas,
Binaya Krsna Dasa.
