4. Simple Past or Past Perfect? Circle the correct form. Try to translate the ideas so that you can choose the
option that makes sense.
Remember that the past perfect is used to talk about an event that happened some time before another event in the past.
The past perfect tense is not used for consecutive events in the past. If there is a list of consecutive events in the past, we
use the simple past tense.
• The robbers left/had left the bank when the policemen finally arrived/had arrived.
• When the rain started/had started, the Atkinsons finished/had finished planting trees.
• By the time Rebecca went/had gone into the store, she got/had gotten soaked.
