RECAP
Several signs need to be examined depending on how closely monitored a
volcano is. Scientists often use parameters to monitor volcanoes and these are:

Ground deformation. As magma moves upward into the shallow plumbing of a

volcano, it takes up space
Gasses coming out of fumaroles where volcanic gas escape from the surface.
Increase in the frequency and intensity of earthquakes. There could also be
subtle swelling of the ground surface, it breaks rock along the way.

Sensory observations (by people living near the volcano)

What did they see? hear? smell? and feel?

LESSON

Batangas is composed of 4 cities, 30 municipalities, and 1078 barangays. It

is one of the most popular tourist destinations near Metro Manila. It is home to the
well-known Taal Volcano, one of the Decade Volcanoes.

Taal Volcano is one of the most prestigious volcanoes because of its beauty,
yet it is also the second most active volcano in our country. Where were you last
January 12, 2020, when the Taal volcano erupted? We saw on the news some
photos and footage of how devastated the nearby places of the volcano when
erupted.
Three towns divide the Taal volcano. They are Talisay, San Nicolas, and Balete.
These are the town that mostly affected when this volcano erupted. The next
nearest town aside from Talisay, San Nicolas, and Balete is Agoncillo which is
10km from the crater. Tagaytay City is the only town of the province of Cavite
located near the volcano. It is only 12km from the crater.

The crater of the Taal volcano is located in the middle of Taal lake. This lake
is surrounded by 12 towns namely Agoncillo, Alitagtag, Balete, Cuenca, Laurel,
Lemery, Malvar, Mataas na kahoy, San Nicolas, Santa Teresita, Taal, Talisay, and
three cities namely Lipa, Tanauan, and Tagaytay.
In this module, we learn the Volcanic Hazard map of Taal Volcano. We will
learn the visual, geospatial depictions of the areas that could be impacted by
various volcanic phenomena during or
after an eruption. This will help to
communicate a complex array of hazard
information to those at risk.

Taal Volcano is a large caldera filled

by Taal Lake in the Philippines. Located
in the province of Batangas, the volcano is
the second-most active volcano in the
Philippines, with 34 recorded historical
eruptions, all of which were concentrated
on Volcano Island, near the middle of Taal
Lake. The caldera was formed by
prehistoric eruptions between 140,000 BC
and 5,380 AD.

The volcano has had several violent

eruptions in the past, causing loss of life on the island and the populated areas
surrounding the lake, with the death toll estimated at 6,000. Because of its
proximity to populated areas and its eruptive history, the volcano was designated a
Decade Volcano, worthy of close study to prevent future natural disasters. All
volcanoes of the Philippines are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. As a general
reminder, Taal Volcano Island is designated as a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ).

Areas within and close to the volcano Island may be affected by large
volcanic fragments explosively thrown out (ballistic projectiles) from the vent.

Areas around Taal volcano that could include those extending beyond the
coverage of this map may experience fallout tephra/ashfall. Fallout tephra/ashfall
deposition depends on prevailing wind direction and magnitude of the eruption but
is generally heavier near the active vent and thins out indefinitely away from the
eruption center.
In Taal Volcanoes base surge 15 towns that surrounded the volcanoes are affected. Agoncillo, Balete,
Laurel, Lemery, Lipa City, Malvar, Mataas na kahoy, San Nicolas, Santa Teresita, Taal, and Talisay are
affected. Alitagtag, Cuenca, Tanauan City, and Tagaytay City partly to mostly safe towns.

Base Surge Hazard Zone limits are based on

the reconstructed extents of the worst-case
eruption of 1754 using energy line modeling.
This is replicated for the 5 potential eruption
vents, namely, Taal Volcano Island Main
Crater, Binintiang Malaki, Pirapiraso, Off-
Callout, and Binintiang Munti. Buffer Zones
are marked out of 1-kilometer aerial distance
from the hazard zones, in case such as
needed for public safety guidance.
.

Assumptions:

1. Possible eruptions from various active vents within the volcano island were
considered for modeling.
2. The worst-case scenario is similar to the 1754 eruption.
3. If the eruption center occurs outside the volcano island, Expecting Off-
Calaouit, hazard zonation will change.

According to the Department of Science and Technology Philippine Institute of

Volcanology and Seismology, here are the summary of barangays prone to Taal
Volcano Base surge.
Seven towns of Batangas will be affected by the
ballistic projectiles. These towns are Agoncillo,
Balete, Cuenca, Laurel, San Nicolas, Talisay,
and Tanauan City. But only selected barangays
from those towns are affected. Barangay
Calawit of Balete, four barangays from Laurel
namely Bugaan East, Gulod, Poblacion 4 and 5.
Two barangays are greatly affected by a ballistic
projectile in San Nicolas, namely Alas-as and
Pulang Bato. Only Barangay Poblacion 6 of the
town of Talisay are affected.

Hazard Zone Limits are based on the data from the historical eruption of 1754,
1911, and 1965. Possible eruptions from 5 potential eruption vents, namely, Taal
Volcano Island Main Crater, Binintiang Malaki, Pirapiraso, Off-Calaouit, and
Binintiang Munti were generated.

Assumptions
1. Worst-case scenario is similar to the 1754 eruption.

2. If the eruption center occurs outside the volcano island, excepting Off-Calaoit,
hazard zonation boundaries will change.

According to the Department of Science and Technology Philippine Institute of

Volcanology and Seismology, here are the summary of barangays prone to Taal
Ballistic Projectile.
When a tsunami strikes after the Taal
volcano eruption, the 15 towns surrounded by
the volcanoes are safe except for some
barangays that are affected. These barangays
are Poblacion 3 and 4 of Laurel, and 4
barangays of Talisay namely Poblacion 2, 4, 7
and 8.

Hazard Zone Limits are based on the

data from the historical eruption of 1754,
1911, and 1965. Possible eruptions from
5 potential eruption vents, namely, Taal
Volcano Island Main Crater, Binintiang
Malaki, Pirapiraso, Off-Calaouit, and
Binintiang Munti were generated.

Assumptions.

1. The eruption will occur anywhere

within the volcano island.
2. 2. Worst-case scenario is similar to
the 1754 eruption.
3. If the eruption center occurs
outside the volcano island,
excepting Off-Calaoit, hazard
zonation boundaries will change.

According to the Department of Science and Technology Philippine Institute of

Volcanology and Seismology, here are the summary of barangays prone to Taal
Volcanic Tsunami.
Taal volcano is located at the center of the whole province of Batangas.
