Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction – Grade 11
Quarter 3 – Module 18: Volcanic Hazard Map
First Edition, 2020
Republic Act 8293, Section 176 states that no copyright shall subsist in
any work of the Government of the Philippines. However, prior approval of the
government agency or office wherein the work is created shall be necessary for the
exploitation of such work for a profit. Such agency or office may, among other
things, impose as a condition the payment of royalties.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them
to manage their learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an
active learner.
Posttest - This measures how much you have learned from the
entire module.
EXPECTATIONS
In this module, we will learn how to interpret the map of a volcano base on the
PHILVOLCS study of the previous Mt. Taal volcanic eruption to serve as a guide
and what to expect when an eruption happens again.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. read and interpret the Base surge hazard map, Ballistic projectile map,
Tsunami and Fissuring hazard map of Taal Volcano.
2. identify the affected areas from the maps of the base surge, ballistic
projectile, tsunami, and fissuring hazard; and
3. appreciate the importance of interpreting the volcanic hazard maps.
PRETEST
Direction: Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter on a
separate sheet of paper.
1. What are the three towns surrounding the crater of Taal volcano?
A. Agoncillo , Balete , San Nicolas
B. Balete, San Nicolas, Talisay
C. Balete, San Nicolas, Tagaytay
D. Lipa, Santo Tomas, Tagaytay
2. According to the map, how far the ballistic projectile might hit?
A. Between 7 to 8 km C. exactly 9 km
B. Atmost 8 km. D. between 9 to 10 km.
A. C.
B. D.
5. Which among these towns are not part of the province of Batangas?
A. Balete C. Nasugbu
B. Malvar D. Tagaytay
RECAP
Several signs need to be examined depending on how closely monitored a
volcano is. Scientists often use parameters to monitor volcanoes and these are:
LESSON
Taal Volcano is one of the most prestigious volcanoes because of its beauty,
yet it is also the second most active volcano in our country. Where were you last
January 12, 2020, when the Taal volcano erupted? We saw on the news some
photos and footage of how devastated the nearby places of the volcano when
erupted.
Three towns divide the Taal volcano. They are Talisay, San Nicolas, and Balete.
These are the town that mostly affected when this volcano erupted. The next
nearest town aside from Talisay, San Nicolas, and Balete is Agoncillo which is
10km from the crater. Tagaytay City is the only town of the province of Cavite
located near the volcano. It is only 12km from the crater.
The crater of the Taal volcano is located in the middle of Taal lake. This lake
is surrounded by 12 towns namely Agoncillo, Alitagtag, Balete, Cuenca, Laurel,
Lemery, Malvar, Mataas na kahoy, San Nicolas, Santa Teresita, Taal, Talisay, and
three cities namely Lipa, Tanauan, and Tagaytay.
In this module, we learn the Volcanic Hazard map of Taal Volcano. We will
learn the visual, geospatial depictions of the areas that could be impacted by
various volcanic phenomena during or
after an eruption. This will help to
communicate a complex array of hazard
information to those at risk.
Areas within and close to the volcano Island may be affected by large
volcanic fragments explosively thrown out (ballistic projectiles) from the vent.
Areas around Taal volcano that could include those extending beyond the
coverage of this map may experience fallout tephra/ashfall. Fallout tephra/ashfall
deposition depends on prevailing wind direction and magnitude of the eruption but
is generally heavier near the active vent and thins out indefinitely away from the
eruption center.
In Taal Volcanoes base surge 15 towns that surrounded the volcanoes are affected. Agoncillo, Balete,
Laurel, Lemery, Lipa City, Malvar, Mataas na kahoy, San Nicolas, Santa Teresita, Taal, and Talisay are
affected. Alitagtag, Cuenca, Tanauan City, and Tagaytay City partly to mostly safe towns.
Assumptions:
1. Possible eruptions from various active vents within the volcano island were
considered for modeling.
2. The worst-case scenario is similar to the 1754 eruption.
3. If the eruption center occurs outside the volcano island, Expecting Off-
Calaouit, hazard zonation will change.
Hazard Zone Limits are based on the data from the historical eruption of 1754,
1911, and 1965. Possible eruptions from 5 potential eruption vents, namely, Taal
Volcano Island Main Crater, Binintiang Malaki, Pirapiraso, Off-Calaouit, and
Binintiang Munti were generated.
Assumptions
1. Worst-case scenario is similar to the 1754 eruption.
2. If the eruption center occurs outside the volcano island, excepting Off-Calaoit,
hazard zonation boundaries will change.
Assumptions.
ACTIVITY
Direction: Identify the different symbols used in interpreting the maps.

WRAP-UP
The Taal volcano has had several violent eruptions in the past, the most destructive
eruption happened in 1754 causing loss of life on the island and the populated
areas surrounding the lake, with the death toll estimated at 6,000. Because of its
proximity to populated areas and its eruptive history, the volcano was designated a
Decade Volcano, worthy of close study to prevent future natural disasters. All
volcanoes of the Philippines are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire
