SPREADSHEET MODELLING: MODEL MY MERCH

PART ONE

Scenario

Jem has been collecting books for quite some time and has a particular delight for first editions and
signed books. Jem wants you to set up a spreadsheet to help keep track of his book collection.

1. Create a new spreadsheet and add the following columns:


• Book Name
• Book Author
• Year Published
• Is First Edition?
• Is Illustrated?
• Is Signed?
• Money Paid
• Format (H for hardback, P for paperback, R for ring-bound)

2. Add at least 10 different books into the spreadsheet. You can research real books from
AbeBooks.com or make them up.

3. Format the columns appropriately.

4. Add formatting to make the table look nice.

5. Add a total to the Money Paid column.

(1 mark)

6. Create a table to hold the different codes for Format. Create a new column for your books data
to look up the value in the Format column and display whether the book is hardback, paperback
or ring-bound.

7. Add a validation rule to the Format column so that you can only enter H, B or R.

8. Jem has decided to put his books up for sale. The books will be sold for 1.5 x the amount Jem
paid for them, so a £10 book will be for sale for £15. Create a new “Selling Price” column and
add a formula to calculate the selling prices of each book. You should use an absolute formula so
that “1.5” is entered in a single cell.

9. Create an IF statement that writes “SPECIAL BOOK” if a book is signed, illustrated or a first
edition.

(3 marks)

10. Create conditional formatting that highlights all the books that are below a particular value
which you consider is “cheap”.

11. Apply a filter so that only books which are first editions and illustrated are shown.
