Why College Athletes Should Be Paid

The discussion on whether student-athletes should be compensated for the services they

give have existed for an extended period. NCAA argues that paying college athletes could be a

logistical nightmare which would instead hurt the world of student-athletes in colleges more than

it would be of help to them. However, student-athletes bring in massive revenue for their

colleges every year. These students should be compensated to enable them to meet their financial

needs, makes tons of income for their universities and enough amount of money to cover their

hospital bills when they have injuries.

Personal insurance covers for all athlete students to cover for their injuries. There have

been cases where many college players who have hurt themselves while blocking shots from

their opponents and therefore not able to play for the following months as a result of serious

injuries which they have suffered. Students need money to help them pay for medical insurance

cover. These college students sacrifice their physical health and bodies to participate in games

which they love. Student-athletes take immense suffering on their bodies to participate in a sport

for a few additional years before they leave college and begin building their careers. NCAA

should, therefore, centralize healthcare for all the participant student-athletes as they are what

makes the schools and NCAA profitable (McCune 22-24). If the college athletes are injured and

NCAA or school does not aid on how they will be treated, then the students are not able to pay

for their medical bills.

College students should be allowed to make money in some way related to the sport they play.

This is because the college athletes do not expect to get salaries from the school or NCAA. It is

impossible to pay students out of personal department budgets because most of this departments

run at a deficit, and therefore making regular payment of salaries becomes difficult. However,

these students should be salaried proportionately to the effort they put in ensuring regular flow of

revenue. Any athlete loses their eligibility, according to NCAA, if they are paid to play, play on

a professional team, sign contracts with agents, or receive any salaries or allowances. College

athletes should be treated equally as the other students talented in different fields such as

musicians and journalists. The unsafety of the sport alone should be reason enough for players to

earn some kind of revenue for going out and competing for their schools.

Schools are making money off of the player's work. The school makes millions of money each

year, and the college athletes are the main reason why. In coordination with the NCAA, the

school makes a lot of money when they sell out arenas, hosting tournaments, selling

merchandise, and many more activities. In the year 2017, the revenue of 1 billion US dollars was

generated for NCAA, colleges, and universities. More revenue is generated for colleges with

brands like Adidas, Nike, and Jordan (Flaherty 14). Without serious commitments among the

college athletes, this kind of money cannot be generated. If these schools are making a lot of

money from the bowl games and other related events, then students should get paid for the work

they put in to make it to the game.

Most of the college athlete spends a lot of time practicing and therefore unable to work. The

student-athletes spend an average of forty houses or more in training and gaming. They commit

most of their free time in the field, with some of these games reporting weekly. A report by

NCAA shows that athletes spend more than 40 hours training and other activities in between the

week such as weight lifting, administrative meeting, film study, conditioning, and activities

incidental to participate, like visit to the trainer, taping, and rehabilitation which do not account

to the 20 hours limit rule (Jacobs 7). College athlete, therefore, lacks time to make money or

secure a job in any method because time is limited. These athletes need cash to cater for their

daily needs, and therefore, paying them through scholarship is not enough; they need to be paid

for their hard work.

Student-athletes should get compensated while participating in sports. They are playing the sport

and at the same time gaining education to secure their future career paths. They put a lot of effort

into these games to get paid. Apart from playing college games, there is much more to college

students athletes like advertising and conferences they have to be there after the end of the

regular season. College athletes, therefore, deserve a share of the money which they help to

generate.
