MAJOR POINTS

Teachers Involve Parents in Schoolwork (TIPS) is a research-based Family, School,

and Community Partnership (FSCP) initiative that encourages home-school collaboration

focused on student learning. This chapter presents background information and guidelines for

two research-based approaches for increasing family involvement in students’ education.

These practical programs were designed, implemented, and evaluated to help educators see

that they may focus comprehensively on explicit school improvement goals to improve

student learning. TIPS Interactive Homework increases family engagement with students at

home in positive conversations about interesting topics that students learn in class. Ten

purposes of homework and the components of an effective interactive homework process are

discussed. TIPS Volunteers in Social Studies and Art increases family and community

involvement at school by organizing volunteers to present prints of art masterpieces that are

linked to social studies units to increase students’ art appreciation and critical thinking.
Chapter 8: Implement
Teachers Involve Parents
in Schoolwork
Teachers Involve Parents in Schoolwork (TIPS)

interactive homework enables teachers to design and use homework assignments to connect

school and home on curriculum-related

activities. TIPS activities guide students to share their work and ideas with a family partner.

The assignments improve parents’ understanding of what their children are learning; promote

positive conversations about schoolwork at home; and, if well implemented, improve

students’ homework completion, subject-matter skills, and readiness for classwork.

In this chapter, the purposes of homework are outlined. Then, the goals and

components of TIPS interactive homework in language arts, math, and science are discussed.

Sample assignments are given for the elementary, middle, and high school grades. Steps for

implementing TIPS interactive homework are explained.

Parental involvement is a critical factor in the success of children's education. When

parents are involved in their children's education, children are more likely to do well in

school and have better social and emotional development. Parental involvement improves

student achievement, self-esteem, and behavior.
