Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Home visits have a large influence on the academic achievement of students

and the relationship between teachers and students (Ilhan & Sabit, 2019). A home visit

is another way to expand the partnership among teachers and parents and increase the

students’ chances for achievement (Coronel & Tan, 2019). According to Wright et.al

Spring (2018), teacher home visit programs have also been found to improve ties

between schools and culturally diverse families a growing volume of research points to

the significance of parents assisting their children’s learning at home.

According to Kelly, Gaylor and Spiker (2022), teacher home visit programs are

utilized by many schools system as a way to create bonds with parents to increase in-

school parent participation and, most likely, increase student achievement. The biggest

benefit of home visits was a better understanding of the child’s learning in the

classroom. The teacher’s home visit program enables students to realize that they have

a network of support. A home visit is an approach to connect the gap between school

and home for learners, families and teachers.

Also, home visitation programs are designed and implemented to support

families in providing an environment that promotes healthy growth and development.

Programs target their services to families and caregivers to improve child development,

enhance pupils’ academic achievement and promote positive parent-child interactions.

Although programs differ in their approach, populations served and intended outcomes,

high-quality home visiting programs can provide child development and family support

services that reduce risk and increase protective factors (Kelly, Gaylor & Spiker 2022).
2

In line with this, Kelly et.al (2022) stated that home visiting programs

addressing Pupils' Academic Achievement are most effective when delivered at the

community level, through a comprehensive early childhood system that includes the

supports and services that ensure a continuum of care for all family members across the

early years. School Academic Achievement includes the General Average of the

individual child's grades from First grading until the Second grading period, the

school’s home visitation program provides support to children, and the ability of the

family and community involvement to support early child development, health and

well-being. Academic accomplishment is specifically identified with student

development and the advancement of knowledge in an educational environment in

which teaching and learning happen (Farkas, 2017; Lucas, 2017).

Educational success is characterized by a student’s performance in the subjects

that he/she learns in school. Academic accomplishment defines the status of children in

the classroom and provides youngsters with opportunities for developing their talents

and improving their grades as well as preparing for future academic challenges

(Trumbull, et al. 2017).

In addition to home visiting services, appropriate referrals to community

services, including preschool programs, offer a low-cost universal approach that

increases the chances of early school success. This comprehensive approach to home

visiting as a part of a broad early childhood system has been identified as an effective

strategy to help close the gap in pupils’ academic achievement and child well-being

associated with poverty and early childhood adversity. Mahalang Elementary School

conduct Home Visitation Program, however, a formal interview was conducted with

the teachers. The researchers have found out that despite the efforts of the teachers in

conducting the Home Visitation Program still, quite a several pupils have a low grades.
3

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the Home Visitation Program

in the Pupil’s Academic Achievement. Specifically, this study sought to answer the

following questionnaire;

1.What is the extent of effectiveness of the Home Visitation Program to Pupils’

learning as a whole and each area:

a. Parent’s Involvement

b. Teacher’s Participation

2.What is the academic achievement of the participants under the Home

Visitation Program?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the extent of the effectiveness of

the Home Visitation Program and Academic Achievement of the participants?

Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between home visitation program and

pupil’s academic achievement.

Theoretical Framework

This study dealt on the concept of Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) ecological system

theory of human development which states that there are many layers of children’s
development much like the layers of a nested Russian doll. This model of human
development shows how children’s development is interconnected, evolving and
influenced by overlapping systems (Collins et al., 2013; Ruppar et al., 2017). All layers
of children’s environment influence them, and all environments are important to the
development of youth. “Children develop as a result of a series of reciprocal
interactions with their environments in general and their families” (Ferretti &Bub,
2016). Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) model encourages scholars to view the impact of the
relationships between schools and communities on children’s development (Collins,
4

Frels, & Unwuegbuzie, 2013; Leonard, 2011). To help alleviate the difficulties
transitioning into kindergarten, schools and communities can use transition activities
with students, which cause layers of student’s development overlap. When viewing the
transition to kindergarten through Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) ecological system theory,
the transition to kindergarten is not only a product of the interactions between the child
and the school, but series of different interactions between; child and school, family
and school, family and child, community and family and other interactions (Knaus,
Warren, & Blaxell, 2016).

Conceptual Framework
This study is anchored on the study of Ilhan & Sabit (2019) stated, “Home visits
have a large influence on the academic achievement of students and the relationship
between teachers and students”. This study the researchers believe that the parents and
teachers are involve in pupils’ academic achievements and they are most likely to
perform better.

interactions.
5

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study will cover the Grade 6 Pupils enrolled at Mahalang Elementary

School this first and second grading period A.Y 2021-2022. The participants were

randomly selected during home visitation survey and nearby areas. Their responses to

the questionnaire were based on the assessment experiences they have had from the

teachers handling their subjects.

Significance of the Study

This study will beneficial for the following:

School Administrators. It will be beneficial for the school administration to

know if the stakeholders are satisfied with managing classes, online and modular

classes in this pandemic. It will also serve as a guide to monitor the pupils in this

situation.

Teacher. The result of the study could benefit the teachers as becoming mentor,

guide, coach, and support and help students learn.

Parent. The study can provide information on how the parents support and

guide their children.

Pupils. The study from different ways to promote deeper learning, allow pupils

and engage in different techniques and increases children’s satisfaction. This study

wants to know the experience and impression of each child in dealing with this

situation.

Researchers. The result of the study will be beneficial to the future researcher

to know how the student will be able to continue their educational journey at home and

to know how they are equipped when learning takes place.

Definition of Terms

For purpose of clarification to avoid confusion arising from misinterpretations,

the following terms are conceptually and operationally defined:

Home Visitation Program. This term refers to a program that are designed and

implemented to support families in providing an environment that promotes the healthy

growth and development of their children. Program target their services to families and

caregivers in order to improve child development, enhance school readiness, and

promote positive parent-child interactions (Kelley, Gaylor & Spiker, 2022).

Operationally, home visitation program bridges the gap between home, school,

parents, teachers and pupils.

Effectiveness. This term refers to the extent to which objectives are met (‘doing

the right things’) (Erlendsson, 2022).

Operationally, it was the capability of producing the desired result.

Pupil. A person who is enrolled in an educational institution (Barrie, 2021).

In this study, it referred to the learner who is under the direct supervision of a

teacher and is given lessons in every subject necessary for his learning and

development.

Academic Achievement. This term refers to the academic content a learner

learns in a specific period (Barowski & Carter, 2022).

In this study, academic achievement is the measurement of student’s

achievement across various academic subjects.

Parents’ Involvement. A positive influence on pupils’ academic achievement

is so intuitively appealing that society in general, and educators in particular, considered
as the remedy for many problems in education (Driessen, 2021).
In this study, parent involvement is seen as an important strategy for closing the
gap.
7

Pupil’s Behavior. This term refers to the pupils’ behavior to conduct

themselves in an appropriate and respectful manner (Boca, 2021).

In this study, pupils’ tendency to respond a certain way towards something can

be on a continuum of positive to negative or good to bad.

Teacher’s Participation. Able to successfully participate in problem handling

and activities aimed at the development of improvements in instruction and guidance

both formally and informally (Meissel, 2017)

In this study, teachers invest time and effort to mold the learners.

Review of Related Literature

Home visits have a large influence on the academic achievement of students

and the relationship between teachers and students (Ilhan & Sabit, 2019). A home visit

is another way to expand the partnership among teachers and parents and increase the

students’ chances for achievement (Coronel & Tan, 2019). According to Wright et.al

Spring (2018) teacher home visit programs have also been found to improve ties

between schools and culturally diverse families a growing volume of research points to

the significance of parents assisting their children’s learning at home.

Academic accomplishment is specifically identified with student development

and the advancement of knowledge in an educational environment in which teaching

and learning happens (Farkas, 2017; Lucas, 2017). Educational success is characterized

by a student’s performance in the subjects that he/she learns in school. Academic

accomplishment defines the status of children in the classroom and provides youngsters

with opportunities for developing their talents and improving their grades as well as

preparing for future academic challenges (Trumbull, et al. 2017).

8

In the study of (Kelly, Gaylor, and Spiker, 2022) they discovered that the recent

advances in program design, evaluation, and funding have supported the

implementation of home visiting as a practical intervention to improve the health,

safety, education of children and families, mitigating the impact of poverty and adverse

early childhood experiences. The results of the study indicate the home visits and family

engagement have positive impacts on students’ academic achievements in school. The

results of the study are applicable broadly in education and can assist teacher’s in

improving the academic achievement of the pupils.

This model of human development shows how children’s development is

interconnected, evolving and influenced by overlapping systems (Collins et al., 2013;

Ruppar et al., 2017)

Most of the teachers stated that home visit has an affirmative influence on the

academic achievement of pupils because the focus or motivation of well-behaved pupils

is much better than others. Teacher home visit also help to build a strong relationship

among teachers, students and parents.

In line with, (Wright et.al Spring 2018) teacher home visit programs have also

been found to improve ties between schools and culturally diverse families. Teacher

home visits give families an opportunity to share their culture and background with

teachers.

Effectiveness this term refers to the extent to which objectives are met (‘doing

the right things’) (Erlendsson, 2022).

Academic Achievement this term refers to the academic content a learner learns

in a specific period (Barowski & Carter, 2022).

Parents’ Involvement a positive influence on pupils’ academic achievement is

so intuitively appealing that society in general, and educators in particular, considered
as the remedy for many problems in education (Driessen, 2021).
9

Pupil’s Behavior this term refers to the pupils’ behavior to conduct themselves

in an appropriate and respectful manner (Boca, 2021).

Teacher’s Participation able to successfully participate in problem handling and

activities aimed at the development of improvements in instruction and guidance both

formally and informally (Meissel, 2017).

In this research methods relationship among two or more variables are studied

without attempting to influence them. Instead, the possibility of relationships between

among the identified variables is only investigated but manipulated. (Ramos, Sabit, &

Bajao 2017).

Total population sampling is a type of purposive sampling where the whole

population of interest (i.e., a group whose members all share a given characteristic) is

studied. It is most practical when the total population is of manageable size, such as a

well-defined subgroup of a larger population (Glen, 2018).

Validity refers to how accurately a method measures what it is intended to

measure (Fiona Middleton, 2019).

Reliability refers on how consistently a method measures something. If the same

result can be consistently achieved by using the same methods under the same

circumstances, the measurement is considered reliable (Fiona Middleton, 2019).

In this study, parental engagement in their children’s education is a powerful

impact, parents are a child’s first and most persistent educator, and their importance

cannot be over stated (Agayon, Amini, et al., 2022).

Syntheses

The result of home visitation to the parent involvement that families behave

and interact with their children, including the relationship between parent involvement
10

and student achievement from the family perspective, characteristics of families as

learning environments and their effects on student performance. Parents, Pupils and

teachers' perceptions of the home visit program's effect upon student academic

achievement, discipline, and attendance. Also, teacher participation in a targeted home

visitation program had on their attitudes, practices, and parent participation within their

classroom.

Home visits can work as reconciliation sessions among the student, the parent,

and the teacher. This improved the relationship between the teachers and the students.

Numerous conceivable objectives exist for home visits including bridging specific

cultural barriers, giving an account of academic progress, using parental help to build

educational success, and ensuring that the parents have the right tools to do so. Usually,

these home visits take place before the school year starts to enable the teacher to get

some answers concerning the requirements and interests of individual students. These

visits are crucial because they allow the parent and the student to interact with the

teacher in a way that is not intimidating. These visits can likewise enable a teacher to

have better comprehension of the different strengths and difficulties faced by a student

when meeting a student and his/her family in a casual setting.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, participants of the study, sampling

technique, research locale, validity, data and statistical analysis of the study.

Research Design

This study used the descriptive correlational method. Correlation research is

conducted to establish a relationship between two variables. Moreover, it examines how

one variable affects the other and what changes are eventually observed. In this research

methods relationship among two or more variables are studied without attempting to

influence them. Instead, the possibility of relationships between among the identified

variables is only investigated but manipulated. (Ramos, Sabit, & Bajao 2017).

For the quantitative aspects of gathering data in this study, the researchers used

a self-made questionnaire based on the effectiveness of home visitation program on the

pupil’s academic achievement.

Participants of the Study

The participants of the study were the Parents and Teachers of Grades 6

Elementary pupils enrolled in Mahalang Elementary School Year 2021 to 2022. The

participants were randomly selected those who are available during home visitation

survey in nearby areas.

Sampling Techniques

This study used the total enumeration technique in selecting the participants of

parents and teachers of Grade 6 pupils. Total population sampling is a type of

12

purposive sampling where the whole population of interest (i.e., a group whose

members all share a given characteristic) is studied. It is most practical when the total

population is of manageable size, such as a well-defined subgroup of a larger

population (Glen, 2018).

Research Locale

This study was conducted at the Mahalang Elementary School, which is located

at Proper, Barangay Mahalang, Himamaylan City. The campus has an area of

approximately 3 hectares and is situated 4.1 kilometers away of the northern part of the

city proper.

Refers to how accurately a method measures what it is intended to measure

(Fiona Middleton, 2019).

15

To establish the validity of the research instrument, the Good and Scates

evaluation criteria was employed. The researchers submitted a copy of the test

questionnaire to three (3) validators of experts for evaluation and obtained the result of

4.45, which is interpreted as very good, thus the research instrument was valid. These

validator experts were composed of principals with a Master’s Degree and also active

in the teaching profession in elementary education department.

Reliability

To how consistently a method measures something. If the same result can be

consistently achieved by using the same methods under the same circumstances, the

measurement is considered reliable (Fiona Middleton, 2019).

For the reliability, the instrument was conducted and evaluated on Grades 1-3

pupils of Mahalang Elementary school using Cronbach Coefficient Alpha. The result

of the reliability test was .93. This means that the instrument is Excellent.

Data Gathering Procedure

In gathering the data, the following procedures were observed: First the

researchers were sent a letter to the Principal/ Teacher In-charge, Teachers, and

participants of the Mahalang Elementary School asking permission to conduct the

study.

Second, the researchers have the research instrument evaluated for validity in

have pilot tested for to determine its reliability.

Lastly, the researchers were reproduced the necessary number of copies for the

final administration. These were conducted to the parents and teachers of Grade 6 pupils

enrolled at Mahalang Elementary School during the first and second quarter of A.Y

FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATONS

Summary of Findings

1. The extent of effectiveness of home visitation program is very high both for

parent’s involvement and teacher’s participation.

2. The academic performance during the first and second quarter are very

satisfactory.

3. There is a significant relationship between academic achievements and home

visitation program.

Conclusion

This study concluded that parents involvement has a great impact towards

Home Visitation Program because the parents are very supportive when it comes to

their children learning and development.

In terms of teacher’s participation they (provide) to give all their best as long as

they can do to help the pupils learn more and gain more knowledge to achieve their

goals or objectives in life. Also molds them into a better person.

Home Visitation Program is an effective way of communication and interaction

in bridging the gap between home and school, parents, teachers, and learners. Perhaps

the result in the extent of effectiveness of Home Visitation Program to the pupil’s

academic achievement is in the first quarter has a very low significant/negative

relationship. This suggested that the academic performance in the first quarter goes up,

then the extent of effectiveness of Home Visitation Program goes down. While in the

second quarter this revealed that the academic performance has a significant negligible

positive relationship with the extent of effectiveness of Home Visitation Program. This
21

suggested that the academic performance and the extent of effectiveness of Home

Visitation Program both goes up.

Recommendations

Based on the findings, it is recommended for the Principal/Teacher In-charge,

Teachers, and Participants of the Mahalang Elementary School to use variety of

techniques in home visitation where pupils can enhance their academic achievement

and give the learners motivation to learn.

In addition, the researchers need to provide the teachers with all the necessary

because they were the ones who molding young learners to become better responsible

and productive citizens in the future.

Also, an intervention and remediation recommended to be designed and

conducted. More importantly, it is highly recommended for the teachers to come up

with their own authentic technique or teaching materials to cater pupils needs and

improve their academic achievement.

Teachers, instructors at schools, colleges or universities, must remind the

learners that in academic achievements, it is important to think that home visitation is

beneficial to the learners because it gave knowledge to the learners to develop their

learning skills especially in our situation that we are struggling from pandemic.

Teachers have to provide good feedback to the learner’s motivation to learn.

Moreover, learner should be made responsible for their own learning and must always

supplement their knowledge about home visitation program.

For future home visitation studies, it is recommended to include the sources of

home visitation programs, its evidences and references to make the study relevant and

valid with truthfulness and utmost confidentiality.
