THE IMPACT OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT ON

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF HUMS STUDENT AT CABBO

NATIONAL HIGHSCHOOL

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Research indicates that’s parental involvement is effective to strategy to ensure students

success (Bernard 2004)in this generation a lot of parents helping their children in school. Most of
them are helping the students to answer the activities or the task assign by their teachers , even if it’s
normal it has a negative and positive impact.

It also shown that the effect of parents and what they do at home to support learning can
account for 80% of a child academic Success . Expert believe that a parents role in a child’s life has for
Searching impact . Parental involvement is extremely important for a child to do in school . The
parental involvement is associated with higher students achievement. Student are also more likely to
enroll higher level programs. Pass their classes. Attend school regularly. Have letter social skill and
more onto post secondary education. Parental involvement not only enhance academic performance.
But it also has a positive influence on students attitude and behavior. Ac parents interest and
encouragement in a child education can effect the child attitude towards school. classroom conduct .
Self esteem, absenteeism. And motivation. Traditional form of parent involvement includes
participating in school activities (e.g. Parent teacher association PTA), parent teacher conference or
volunteering at the school.

As a whole , research suggest parents can have a positive effect on children learning by being
involved in their schooling .However , parent involvement has a greater impact on school grades that
on standardized achievement test scores. This research serve as a way to find out of the impact of
parental involvement on students academic performance of Humms students that enrolled in Cabbo
National High school.

questions.

1.What is the level of academic performance of grade 12 student of Cabbo National High school
(CNHS) when the parents are involve to their learnings in terms of

a. General grades when the are grade 11?

b. Attitude toward their study?

c. Percent of parental involvement?

2. What is the attention spam in studying of grade 12 students of CNHS when the parents are involve
in their learnings?

3. What is the significant of parental involvement on academic performance of Grade 12 in CNHS?

Research Hypothesis There were two hypotheses this research wished to address. They were:

1. There will be a positive correlation between parents’ level of involvement and the levels of success
of their children.

2. There will be a positive correlation between parent’s levels of education and expectations for their
children.

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

The research aims to investigate whether there is a statistically significant relationship between the
level of parental involvement and academic performance of HUMSS students.subsequent analysis and
findings will either support the alternative hypothesis, indicating a significant influence of parental
involvement on academic outcomes.

SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

This study is significant as offers additional research that may indicate student achievement is
directly corresponds to parental involvement in turn, academic achievement may serve to motivate
parents and families to continue or become more involved in school activities.patents, student, and
educations can use these finding to develop programs and strategies to increase parental involvement
in school

More specifically this study shall be beneficial to the various groups of people.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

FOREIGN STUDIES

Parent involvement in a child’s early education is consistently found to be positively associated with a
child’s academic performance (Hara & Burke, 1998; Hill & Craft, 2003; Marcon, 1999; Stevenson &
Baker, 1987). Specifically, children whose parents are more involved in their education have higher
levels of academic performance than children whose parents are involved to a lesser degree. The
influence of parent involvement on academic success has not only been noted among researchers, but
also among policy makers who have integrated efforts aimed at increasing parent involvement into
broader educational policy initiatives. Coupled with these findings of the importance of early
academic success, a child’s academic success has been found to be relatively stable after early
elementary school (Entwisle & Hayduk, 1988; Pedersen, Faucher, & Eaton, 1978). Therefore, it is
important to examine factors that contribute to early academic success and that are amenable to
change.

Researchers have reported that parent-child interactions, specifically stimulating and responsive
parenting practices, are important influences on a child’s academic development (Christian, Morrison,
& Bryant, 1998; Committee on Early Childhood Pedagogy, 2000). By examining specific parenting
practices that are amenable to change, such as parent involvement, and the mechanisms by which
these practices influence academic performance, programs may be developed to increase a child’s
academic performance. While parent involvement has been found to be related to increased academic
performance, the specific mechanisms through which parent involvement exerts its influence on a
child’s academic performance are not yet fully understood (Hill & Craft, 2003). Understanding these
mechanisms would inform further research and policy initiatives and may lead to the development of
more effective intervention programs designed to increase children’s academic performance
LOCAL STUDIES

Parental involvement refers to the amount of participation a parent has when it comes to the
schooling of his/her children. Some schools foster healthy parental involvement, but sometimes
parents has hesitations if they will involve themselves with their children’s education. It has been
advocated in Western countries. However, there is a body of literature that examines the significance
of social and cultural influences and the effects of parents’ involvement in and expectations of their
children’s development and learning. It is important for schools to recognize the existence of cultural
variations in parent involvement because there are differences among parents with diverse
background on when, why, and how they are involved in their children’s education. Parenting is
important in the Philippine society because family is viewed as a center to one’s social world. But,
social contexts in which Filipino families are embedded have changed rapidly over the past ten years
(Ochoa & Torre, n.d.). Children’s learning is increasingly moving toward a broader vision of the 21 st
century learning. As children’s educations increasingly occur across a range of settings, parents are
uniquely positioned to help ensure that these settings best support their children’s specific learning
needs. Thus, parental involvement researches remain misrepresentative of parents and the
involvement that they have with their children’s education (Jackson, 2010).The present study is using a
qualitative research design that will investigate existing literatures on parental involvement in Early
Childhood Education in terms of communicating from the school, volunteering and participating in
school’s activities, and learning at home. The study will rely on the analysis of documents in order to
gain deeper understanding about parental involvement in the Philippines and propose a School-
facilitated Parental Involvement (SPIn) Framework.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the procedures used to conduct this study. It includes the research design,
sampling procedure and sample, Data gathering and the analysis of data.

RESEARCH DESIGN

That research design used by the researcher is quantitative because we need to quantify the impact
parental involvement on the academic performance of grade 11 students descriptive method was used
by the researcher on their attempt asses the impact of parental involvement on the academic
performance of grade 11 HUMSS students at Cabbo National High School
SAMPLING PROCEDURE AND SAMPLE

To study the impact of parental involvement on the academic performance of Humss (Humanities and
Social Sciences) students, you can employ a mixed-methods approach. Begin with quantitative data by
designing surveys to collect information on parental involvement levels and academic performance
metrics. For qualitative insights, conduct interviews or focus group discussions with parents and
students to explore experiences and perceptions. Ensure random sampling for representative results
and consider variables like socioeconomic status. Combining both methods provides a comprehensive
understanding of the relationship between parental involvement and academic outcomes in humss
students.

DATA GATHERING METHOD

The process for gathering the needed data in the study is described in the following steps:

1.)The researcher shall seek the permission of the instruments that will be adapted in this study

2.)The researchers will serve permission of the school to obtain a list of shs students from which the
samples will be selected

3.) The questionnaire shall be distributed to the selected samples during interviews

4.) Questionnaire shall be collected after they answered it

DATA ANALYSIS

To answer the questions presented under the statement of the problem the following statistical tool
will be employed

1. Per percentage will be used to present and analyze data regarding the democratic profile of
the respondent.
2. Weighted mean will be computed to represent the response of each respondent to the
questionnaire and their attitude toward their study while standard deviation will be used to
determine the grades of each respondents.

3. The person product moment correlation coefficient will be used to determine the degree of
the impact of parental involvement on the academic performance.
