INTRODUCTION

An age-old Chinese saying that emphasized the critical role parents play in their children's

education more than 800 years ago stated, "The responsibility for a child's lack of education falls directly

on the parents.” Senior high school academic performance refers to the attainment of goals,

accomplishments, and objectives within the educational programs or courses attended by students.

Numerous studies conducted in the field of education have revealed that parental involvement

significantly influences the academic performance of senior high school students (Crosnoe, Johnson, &

Elder, 2019). Parents who are immigrants may be extra disadvantaged in this regard, as they often face

challenges due to language barriers and a lack of familiarity with the educational system (Antony-

Newman 2019).

In senior high schools, exploring the extent and impact of parental involvement on students'

academic performance is of growing interest. Understanding how parental involvement contributes to

student success can provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and parents themselves.

Effective parental involvement fosters a supportive learning environment and enhances students'

motivation and engagement in their studies. When there is a strong partnership between parents and

schools, students are more likely to achieve their academic potential and succeed academically in senior

high school. It is also known that the effects of parents and what they do at home to support learning can

account for 80% of a child's academic success. Experts believe that a parent’s role in a child’s life has a

significant impact. Parental involvement is very important for a student to do well in school.

According to Harvard University, parental involvement in family studies is linked with enhanced

student accomplishment. Additionally, students are more likely to attend courses consistently, pass their

subjects, have stronger social skills, register in more advanced programs, and pursue postsecondary

education. Parental involvement not only enhances academic performance, but it also has a positive

influence on students attitudes and behaviors. A parent’s interest and encouragement in a child’s

education can affect the child's attitude towards school, classroom conduct, self-esteem, absenteeism, and

motivation.
One significant aspect of education that has drawn more attention from scholars and individuals is

the effect that parental involvement has on SHS students' academic achievement in the Philippines. The

aim of this research is to provide insights that may guide effective ways to enhance academic

achievement and promote holistic development by thoroughly analyzing and appreciating the subtle

influence of parental engagement within the distinctive cultural and socioeconomic environment of the

Philippines. Similarly, the Philippine Department of Education introduced several programs to increase

parental involvement in the educational process, such as the E-Learning Program, which brought together

teachers, parents, and community members and gave them access to social media platforms and websites

to track their children's progress (Abulon et al. 2020).

Parents are children's first teachers. They will set the rules, guide the children, and provide for

their basic necessities. Parents want their children to be successful in life, which is why they are always

encouraging them. According to Garcia and Thornton (2018), parental involvement in learning benefits

student accomplishment. It will boost their confidence, reduce absenteeism, and make them more

engaged in class. With correct instruction, children can get a high score, develop 4 their social skills, and

improve their behavior. And in our community, this is a necessity because it reduces some undesirable

behaviors like crime and poverty. Our population is rising due to a lack of parental guidance, just as it is

today. Because their parents never check on or monitor them, many students drop out of school. Learners

obtained knowledge not just in school but also at home" (Clinton & Hattie, 2021).

This study serves as a way to find out the influence of parental involvement on the academic

achievement of senior high school students at Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) in the City of San

Fernando, Pampanga. The more parents involved in their children's education, the better their entire

class's motivation, behavior, and grades become. Encouraging parents' engagement is a more common

courtesy. It's one of the ways to create a positive learning environment for every student.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to understand how parentsal involvement influences Grade 11 students at

Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU).

1. How does parental involvement, including activities such as teacher communication and

home support, influence the academic achievement of Grade 11 students?

2. Does Parental Involvement have any impacts in their students attendance and classroom

participation?

3. How does parental involvement influence the attitudes of Grade 11 students towards

school and their overall motivation for academic achievement?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is important because it provides more evidence that suggests a direct correlation between

parental involvement and student accomplishment. Academic success can then act as a catalyst for parents

and families to continue or increase their involvement in school-related activities. These results can be

used by parents, students, and teachers to create initiatives and plans aimed at boosting parental

involvement in the classroom. More specifically, different groups of people will benefit from this study.

• Students: One of the ways through which this study can be useful is that students get to know

the importance of parental involvement in their education; hence, their lives become more stable.

In addition, it could help children to understand that there are some helpful ways and approaches

to learning that they may choose with the support of mothers and fathers. Moreover, pupils might

be inspired by knowing how much their parents actually contribute to their excelling

academically.

• Parents: Parents who participated in our study were encouraged to play a more active role in

supporting their kids’ knowledge acquisition process, keeping tabs on the academic progress of

their children, and offering the necessary home support required.

The parents’ understanding of what they should do to help their young ones thrive academically

might make them feel comfortable as both learning partners.

• Teachers:This research will assist teachers in determining how important parental involvement

is for student achievement. With this information, instructors may be more likely to endorse or

encourage parents' participation in school events. Moreover, we can use these findings to improve

communication between home and school, thus making teachers’s connections with parents

better.

• For future researchers: This study can be used by future researchers as a stepping stone if

they wish to pursue the same topic. Other variables that may affect the link between parental

involvement and academic achievement can also be studied using the findings of this research.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study's main goal is to find out how parental involvement influences Grade 11 students at

Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) in San Fernando, Pampanga, in terms of their academic progress.

Its objective is to look at the relationship between the experiences and perspectives of students and the

influence of parental involvement on their academic achievement.

The research included fifty (50) Grade 11 students from Our Lady of Fatima University, located

in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga. In order to provide a representative collection of perspectives and

experiences among the student body, this sample size was selected.

This research, which will take place at Our Lady of Fatima University in San Fernando City,

Pampanga, from April to May of 2024, focuses on Grade 11 pupils. An in-depth investigation of the

influence of parent involvement on academic achievement over the course of a term in school is made

possible by the chosen period.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

• Academic performance: academic achievement, or, in other words, academic performance, is a

wide term that covers many aspects of a student's success. It includes

not only the scores obtained by students but also their knowledge of the subject matter, ability to

apply it, and overall growth in skills and competences.

• Attitude: In education, attitude plays an important part in students’ behaviour patterns,

learning approaches, and their interrelationships with peers and teachers. Positivity helps foster

curiosity, resilience, and a growth mindset, while negativity may hinder social development as

well as academic progress.

• Grades: serve as a measure of academic proficiency and are often represented by a

combination of numerical scores or letter grades. They provide feedback to students, teachers,

and parents about the quality of a student's work, understanding of material, and progress towards

learning objectives.

• Holistic Development: To put it simply, holistic development is all about developing the

whole person, including the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual aspects of an individual.

• Parental involvement: Parental involvement is described as the active participation of

parents in their children’s journey through academia. It extends beyond aiding in education and

involves things like chatting with teachers, taking part in school activities, and setting an

appropriate home-based learning atmosphere. Research has consistently shown that meaningful

parental involvement contributes to better academic results, improved behaviour, and enhanced

social skills.

• Senior High School (SHS): Senior High School (SHS) is the last phase of the K–12

educational system and a transition period between secondary education and higher education or

work. It offers specialised tracks or strands that enable students to explore career possibilities as

well as match them with skills needed for future endeavours.

• STEM: The STEM strand (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in

senior high is one such form of specialisation track; it concentrates on building up competence

among its learners in these key areas. Students who enrol in this option engage in challenging

coursework and practical experiences that aim at equipping them with knowledge useful in such

professions as engineering, computer science, and

medicine, just to mention a few. This course helps develop critical thinking skills and problem-

solving abilities.

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

In two different types of research, we looked at the relationship between parents' impressions of

their interactions with their children when they help them with their math homework and their level of

math anxiety. They specifically polled parents of kids in Grades 1–6 in North America regarding how

much time they spend assisting their child with their homework and how much confidence, conflict,

stress, frustration, and emotionality they experience in relation to their math anxiety during these

interactions. As expected, when parents assist their children with homework in math, they experience

more negative emotions related to the homework setting. Knowing this relationship has significant

ramifications for educational methods, particularly in light of the growing emphasis on parental

involvement in their kids' education (DiStefano, 2020).

In this study, students at a middle-level, semi-government school in the Sukkur, Pakistan, district

will have their perceptions of how parental participation affects their academic success examined. Sixth,

seventh, and eighth graders make up the study's population. The intended sample was chosen to use a

practical sampling technique. A self-developed questionnaire that was examined by content and construct

experts was used to determine the best quantitative research approach. A descriptive analysis was

performed on the data. The collective results of these surveys demonstrate that students believe parents

ought to continue to keep an eye on their children's academic progress and that there ought to be contact

between parents and teachers as well as between students themselves. Parental participation in school

events was valued highly by the respondents (Ali, 2024).

To contribute to the realisation of additional resources for contending parents in Selangor,

Malaysia, when they are trying to make their children participate in home-based school activities, this

piece of research aims at examining parental involvement in children’s

education. The data collection was done through questionnaires and phone interviews involving 10

parents and 5 teachers who participated from one local primary school within that specific area during the

movement control order (MCO) period. The research results show that parental involvement has

significant effects on academic performance among students. However, despite being clearly understood

as a necessity for such relationships in education systems, there is still an observation that many parents

do not properly involve themselves in them, be it at schools or homes. In conclusion, parental

involvement is strongly intertwined with the development of social skills and the creation of a good self-

concept for children, hence playing a crucial role in primary education (Seong Pek & Mee 2020).
