1) DESCRIPTION

The modulator CT100M is composed of two brass elements:

- The flow regulator in lower part

- The safety relay in upper part

1 FLOW REGULATOR

The flow regulator consist of a pressure reducing valve with differential pressure (lower
membrane in neoprene, spring dia. 30, an assembled valve, an adjustable screw) ensures
constant air flow to the outlet of the modulator.

It included in addition to the pressure reducing valve system:


- A flow adjusting screw, needle valve which permits to set up the bubbling output air to the
recommended value (10 litres per hour)
- A brass filter
- Two connections dia. 1/4”NPT
One for the connecting of the air supply, located near the supply valve.
One for the connecting of the bubbling tube situated below the purge valve.
- Two valves
One to isolate the air supply (normally opened)
One to purge (normally closed) which, when opened short-circuits the flow regulator and
permits the purge.
This purge is possible thanks to the safety relay that protect the indicator against
overpressure.

2 SAFETY PISTON

The safety piston separates the manometer from bubbling circuit, protects the indicator when
hydrostatic pressure comes over the range of measure scale (case: obstruction of bubbling
probe or purge).

It is included in addition with the assembled valve:


- A regulating screw which in compressing the spring diam.16 positioned under the cover of
the modulator calibrate the safety piston to a pressure close to the range of measure scale of
the indicator (± 200mbar of nominal range)
- An upper membrane in neoprene fixed with the assembled valve separates the bubbling
circuit from the atmosphere.
- A connection dia. 1/8” NPT is for the connecting of the modulator to the indicator or another
accessory (pressure-switch for example)

2) ADJUSTEMENT :
The modulator CT100M necessitates two adjustments:

- 1/ air flow of bubbling out put

- 2 / calibration of the safety piston

1 / AIR FLOW OF BUBBLING OUTPUT


This airflow is calibrated with the flow adjusting screw.

1.1 Operation mode


- Unscrew the locking nut of the flow adjusting screw by means an opened pipe wrench key
7mm large
- Keep this pipe wrench around the nut
- Introduce a screwdriver trough the pipe-wrench
- Screw the adjusting screw on to decrease the air-flow
- Unscrew the adjusting screw on to increase the air-flow
Nota : a rotation of the adjusting screw of 1/8 turn can modify very much the air-flow of
insufflation
- Lock the nut back

1.2 Flow test


The best way to check the air-flow of bubbling output is to disconnect the line far from the
panel.
The flow is checked with:
− a flowmeter connected to outlet of modulator or to the bubbling line
or
− In plunging into bottle of water.
The flow is characterized by an bubble by bubble air-blowing.
It is correct when the bubble by bubble is coherent and that is possible in the limit to count
the bubbles (about 80 bubbles per minute)

2 / SAFETY PISTON

1.2 PURPOSE

The safety piston of the modulator CT100M protects again all over pressure the gauge or
all other measure elements (pressure switch – bellows – gauge – transducer for example)
to which the modulator is connected.
This over-pressure can come from:
− The exceeding of the maximum filling level (for example filling of the event pipe for a
ballast tank).
− The obstruction of bubbling line or tubular probe
− The opening of the modulator purge valve

1.3 ADJUSTMENT

1.3.1 Materiel to use

- A spanner of 14 and 11 mm or adjustable spanner


- A spanner of 10 or small screwdriver dia. 3mm
- Plastic pipe of 2 meter long and dia. 4x6
- A plug or valve to connect to the plastic pipe above
- An accurate gauge

1.3.2 Preparation of installation

1/ Disconnect from the modulator the plastic pipe of bubbling outlet,


2/ Connect the plastic pipe of 2 m long to the bubbling outlet and put the other
extremity of this pipe front of the panel,
3/ Connect the gauge between the modulator and the transducer.

1.3.3 Operation mode

Increase the pressure in bubbling line by plugging the plastic pipe.


The indication goes up on the numerical indicator and must stop little bit above the
maximum of reading.

For example : Maximum of reading 850 mbar indication must stop to 865 mbar and
on gauge to 855 mbar.

Two possible effect:

The pressure on the gauge stops

1/ bellows the recommended pressure 855 or 830:

The safety piston cuts the pressure early do the following operations:

- Take the plug away or open the valve to increase the pressure
- Unscrew the nut on top of the modulator (spanner of 14mm)
- Screw a little bit the screw and block the nut back
- Test again, if the safety piston does not stop to the desired value, return to the
first operation just above or go further.

2/ above the recommended pressure:

The safety piston cuts the pressure above the recommended value do the following
operations:
- Take the plug away or open the valve to increase the pressure
- Unscrew the nut on top of the modulator
- Unscrew the screw a little bit and block the nut back
- Test again
- Adjust a again until to get the desired value of the adjustment.
