Read the following text to answer questions 8 to 12

The petroleum we obtain to day was formed under the ground for many millions of years.
In the past, small animals living in the sea sank to the seabed when they died. Layers of these
creatures built up over millions of years, and the actions of heat, pressure and bacteria turned
their bodies into petroleum. The petroleum spread through porous rocks until it came to
impervious rocks. In this way, pockets of petroleum were formed beneath the ground. Over many
thousands of years, this land rose above the sea, and deposits of oil are now found on or near
land.
Oil companies employ scientists to study rocks and discover where oil is likely to be
found. If it seems likely that oil exists beneath their feet, they will draw a narrow hole to find out

The largest of the world’s 17 penguin species, emperor penguins stand nearly four feet and
weigh up to 90 pounds. These sea birds never set foot on dry land. (1) An estimated 200,000
breeding pairs live in about 40 penguin colonies scattered along the coasts of Antarctica. (2)
Their waterproofed feathers, flipper-like wings, and streamlined bodies make them excellent
swimmers and divers. On ice they can travel distances up to 50 miles by “tobogganing”—gliding
on their stomachs while pushing with their wings and feet.
(3) Emperor penguins breed during the Antarctic winter in some of the world’s most severe
weather conditions (temperatures of –80 F and winds up to 112 miles per hour). Breeding during
the winter allows chicks to mature in midsummer when food is plentiful. After the female lays a
single egg, the male holds it in a fold of skin near his feet for a two-month incubation period.
During this time he huddles with other males to keep warm. (4) The male moves very little and
does not eat, usually losing up to a third of his body weight. Meanwhile the females go to sea and
dive for fish so that when they return they can feed and care for the newly hatched chicks. After
the male restores his body weight, both parents take turns caring for their young.
The world’s emperor penguin population declined in the last 50 years due to a period of
warming ocean temperatures. Warm water shrinks ice cover and reduces the population of krill—
a small crustacean that is the emperor penguin’s staple food. Today the emperor penguin
population has stabilized, but warming trends could again threaten this magnificent sea bird.

21. What is the author’s main purpose in this passage?

E. They can withstand severe weather.

23. The word ‘stabilized’ in the last sentence paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ___
A. held steady.
B. increased.
C. slowed.
D. fluctuated.

24. Why do male emperor penguins form a huddle?

Angels
Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The
family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion’s guest room. Instead the angels
were given a space in the cold basement.
As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and
repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, “Things aren’t always
what them seem”.
The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer
and his wife. After sharing what little food they had, the couple let the angels sleep in their bed
where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the next morning, the angels
found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income,
lay dead in the field.
The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel, “How could you have let this
happen? The first man had everything, yet you helped him,” she accused, “The second family had
little but was willing to share everything, and you let their cow die”.
“Things aren’t always what them seem,” the older angel replied. “When we stayed in the
basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner
was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he
wouldn’t find it. Then, last night as we slept in the farmer’s bed, the angel of death came for his
wife. I gave him the cow instead. Things aren’t always what them seem”.

The story to ‘Kung Fu Panda’

The story to ‘Kung Fu Panda’ is nothing really new, but it is told so well as to actually
pack an emotional punch. And it never comes off as laughable, which in lesser hands could easily
have happened. Speaking of laughs, there are many to be had here as well. ‘Kung Fu Panda’
works on just about every level a family movie can.
The cast features Jack Black as Po the Panda. The furious five, the most feared group of
warriors in all of China, consists of Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis
(Seth Roger), Viper (Lucy Liu), and Crane (David Cross). Their master is Shifu (Dustin
Hoffman), a fur ball creature who is a legendary teacher of Kung Fu. Escaped from prison and on
high way to claim the Dragon Scroll, which will make him the all powerful Dragon Warrior, is
the good gone bad Tai Lung (Ian McShane). But first, he’ll have to muscle his way around 400
pounds of panda to get to it.
‘Kung Fu Panda’ is a damn good time at the movies. This was the movie that
Dreamworks Animation so desperately needed after the disappointing ‘Shrek The Third’. With
gorgeous animation, spectacular action, a great cast and dramatic weight of an Akira Kurosawa
film, Kung Fu Panda is one of the favourite movie of the year.

A. Funny
B. Touching
C. Stunning movie picture
D. Excellent actors
E. Unexciting
39. Shrek The Third is ….
A. as desperate as Kung Fu Panda
B. not produced by Dreamworks
C. not a moving picture
D. not a first-rate movie

A. An animal who likes to play fur ball
B. A ball-size creature which is hairy
C. An animal with black and white skin
D. An animal who is good at Kung Fu
E. A hairy animal
