Each tooth consists of three main parts - the crown, neck, and root. The crown is the visible part above the gums and contains the dental pulp cavity. The root is embedded in the jawbone and attached to ligaments. Teeth also contain hard tissues like dentin, enamel, and cementum. The soft dental pulp contains blood vessels and nerves. The objectives are to differentiate the tooth's histological and anatomical parts and describe the different parts of the tooth. The student will draw and label the parts of single and multi-rooted teeth and their supporting structures.

THE TOOTH A tooth is a hard-calcified structure set in the alveolar process of the mandible and maxilla primarily for mastication. Each tooth consists of three parts: the crown, the portion exposed above the gingival line, having a central cavity which contains the dental pulp; the neck, the constricted region between the crown and the root; the root, the portion embedded between the alveolus and attached to the periodontal ligament. The solid parts include dentin, forming most of the tooth and resembling true bone; enamel, a very hard inorganic substance, covering the crown; the cementum, covering the root. The soft tissue, the dental pulp, is composed of richly vascularized and innervated connective tissue. Objectives: The student should be able to: 1. Differentiate the histological part of the tooth from its anatomical parts. 2. Describe the different parts of the tooth. Materials: drawing materials, textbook and reference books. Procedure: 1. Draw and label the histological & anatomical parts of a single rooted tooth and a multirooted tooth as well as its supporting structures. Questions: 1. Discuss the blood supply of the tooth in general.
2. Describe each of the histological and anatomical parts of the
