Thermochemistry and Hot Pack Creation

1) The document describes a hot pack device created using the exothermic reaction between calcium chloride and water. When the water bag is squeezed, calcium chloride dissolves in water, releasing a large amount of heat energy. 2) The hot pack is intended to help relieve muscle cramps by placing it on the cramped area. The heat expands arteries to increase blood flow and relax the muscle. 3) Exothermic reactions like combustion and neutralization release heat energy and raise temperatures, while endothermic reactions absorb heat from the surroundings. The hot pack demonstration illustrates an exothermic reaction concept in thermochemistry.

TEACHER’S NAME : PN ROHAIZA BINTI BAHAROM
OBJECTIVE
Every chemical reaction is followed by a change in the form of energy. When
chemical reaction occurs, chemical energy stored in the reactants is converted to
heat energy and released into the surroundings.
In general, thermochemistry is the study of thermal energy related to chemical
reactions or physical transformation. Chemical reaction in thermochemistry can be
divided into two types namely exothermic and endothermic reaction that depend on
the heat change that occurs during reactions.
Based on this topic, I was required to do a research about these chemical reactions
that can be used in our daily life or to solve any problems. In this case, I was tasked
to create a tool that could overcome the problem of muscle cramps that are often
faced by sport people.
In addictions, I will describe some information related to thermochemistry based on
the task given. This can help those out there learn about this topic and know some
advantages behind this topic.
MUSCLE CRAMPS FACTOR
Overuse of a muscle, dehydration, muscle strain or simply holding a position for a long
period can cause a muscle cramp. However, there are several other factors that can cause
muscle cramps:

1) Low blood supply

 Constricted arteries
can’t supply enough
amount of blood to
leg and cause the
pain in the leg.

2) Nerve compression
 Compression of
nerves in spine
produce pain in legs
(cramp). This pain
usually persist if we
continue to force our
legs to work like
walking
.
3) Mineral depletion
 Poor mineral intake in
diet such as
potassium, calcium
and magnesium can
cause injury to
muscle cells.
HOT PACK
I was tasked with creating a thermochemically conceptualized device called a hot
pack.

Materials:
1. 2 different size of ziplock bag
2. Calcium chloride
3. Water

Instructions:
1. Fill the larger bag with calcium chloride
2. Fill the smaller bag with water
3. Then put the small bag into the large bag
4. Squeeze the small bag until it break open to create a reaction

HOW IT WORKS
Hot pack functions by dissolving salt in water. When the bag containing water was
squeezed, calcium chloride will be dissolved in water. This process will absorb
energy from surrounding to break the ionic bonds of calcium chloride. The ions then
form a bond with water that release energy. This process released a huge amount of
energy that cause the solution feel warmer (exothermic reaction).

A hot pack will be used when a person experiences a muscle cramp. The hot pack
will be placed on the area that experiencing cramp. Heat released from hot pack will
expand the arteries so that blood flow increase and relaxing the muscle to reduce
the cramp.
CONCLUSION
Based on the product, we can found that exothermic reaction is a reaction that
release heat energy, thus the temperature of the surrounding become increase.
Example of exothermic reactions are combustion, respiration and neutralisation.
Other than that, there are one more reaction which is endothermic reaction. This
reaction absorbs heat from surrounding to make the temperature of surrounding
become decrease. As example is cold pack that use the process of dissolving
magnesium sulphate in water.
