Introductory Message
Welcome to Research 8!
The Research 8 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and the
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links
to ease independent learning.

The NSTF is held to give the participants the chance for learning and
development through attending various shop talks designed to foster
innovativeness, creativity, and excellence in science and research education.
The NSTF is clustered into three major categories: Life Science, Physical
Science and Robotics, and Intelligent Machines.
1. Life Science refers to the scientific study of both living and non-living
organisms and their processes. Studies conducted here are about plants,
animals, microorganisms, DNA, enzymes, health, and medicine.
Here are the sub-categories of scientific fields under Life Science:
1
environment studied through observational and experimental
methods.
c) Biochemistry: The study of the chemical basis of processes occurring
in living organisms, including the processes by which these
substances enter into, or are formed in, the organisms.
d) Biomedical and Health Science: This is the science of addressing
human health issues and diseases.
e) Biomedical Engineering: This includes the tasks applying the
principles of engineering and the concepts designed for medicine and
biology healthcare purposes, i.e., diagnosis, monitoring, and therapy.
f) Cellular and Molecular Biology: This is an interdisciplinary field that
analyzes the cell’s structure, function, intracellular pathways, and
formation.
g) Earth and Environmental Sciences: This is study of the environment
and its result on organisms or the different systems involving the
probing of biological processes, i.e., growth and life span, and the
Earth systems and their evolution.
h) Plant Sciences: This involves studying of plants and how they survive,
involving their structure, physiology, development, and classification.
i) Translational Medical Science: projects that aim to improve human
health and longevity by translating novel discoveries in the biomedical
sciences into effective activities and tools for clinical and public health
use.
j) Microbiology: The study of microorganisms, including bacteria,
viruses, fungi, prokaryotes, and eukaryotes as well as antimicrobial
and antibiotic substances.
2. Physical Science is the science concerned with the study of inanimate
natural objects as well as the understanding of the material universe and
its phenomena.
2
c) Embedded Systems: This studies focuses conveyed information via
signals and waveforms for purpose of enhancing communication,
control, and/or sensing using electrical systems.
d) Energy: Chemical: Studies involving biological and chemical processes
of renewable energy sources, clean transport, and alternative fuels.
e) Energy: Physical: Studies of renewable energy structures/processes
including energy production and efficiency.
f) Engineering: Mechanics: This study involves the movement or
structure, the science and engineering behind it.
g) Environmental Engineering: This study focuses to solve environmental
problems, i.e., supply of water, the disposal of waste, or the control of
pollution by engineering or developing processes and infrastructure.
h) Material Science: The study of the characteristics and uses of various
materials with improvements to their design which may add to their
advanced engineering performance.
i) Mathematics: This is the study of the numbers and symbols involving
its measurement, properties, and relationships of quantities and sets.
j) Physics and Astronomy: Physics is the study of matter and energy their
interaction.
