Introductory Message

Welcome to Research 8!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of

the Schools Division of San Carlos City and DepEd Regional Office VI -
Western Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division
(CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents,
and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the
K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials

aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and
time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also
assist the learners in acquiring lifelong learning skills, knowledge, and
attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Research 8 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and the
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links
to ease independent learning.

For the learner:

The Research 8 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue

learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with
meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active
learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the
activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator
on the agreed schedule.

Categories of Scientific Research

I. Learning Competency with Code

o Categorize research in terms of feature and relevance (SSP_RS8-TRS-
Ia-2).
o Identify research problem categories (Life Science, Physical Science,
and Robotics) (SSP_RS8-RPS-Ic-e-6).

II. Background Information for Learners

The Department of Education (DepEd) through the Bureau of

Curriculum Development (BCD) is conducting a Science and Technology Fair
(NSTF) every year. The aims of the Science and Technology fair is to promote
Science and Technology consciousness and a culture of innovation among
the youth and identify the most creative and innovative student researchers
from Junior and Senior High School who shall represent the country in
International Science Research.

The NSTF is held to give the participants the chance for learning and
development through attending various shop talks designed to foster
innovativeness, creativity, and excellence in science and research education.
The NSTF is clustered into three major categories: Life Science, Physical
Science and Robotics, and Intelligent Machines.

Categories of Scientific Research

1. Life Science refers to the scientific study of both living and non-living
organisms and their processes. Studies conducted here are about plants,
animals, microorganisms, DNA, enzymes, health, and medicine.
Here are the sub-categories of scientific fields under Life Science:

a) Animal Science: The science of studying the characteristics of animals

and animal life, their life cycle, and their interaction with one another
or with their environment.
b) Behavioral and Social Sciences: The science of thought processes and
behavior of humans and other animals in their interactions with the

1
environment studied through observational and experimental
methods.
c) Biochemistry: The study of the chemical basis of processes occurring
in living organisms, including the processes by which these
substances enter into, or are formed in, the organisms.
d) Biomedical and Health Science: This is the science of addressing
human health issues and diseases.
e) Biomedical Engineering: This includes the tasks applying the
principles of engineering and the concepts designed for medicine and
biology healthcare purposes, i.e., diagnosis, monitoring, and therapy.
f) Cellular and Molecular Biology: This is an interdisciplinary field that
analyzes the cell’s structure, function, intracellular pathways, and
formation.
g) Earth and Environmental Sciences: This is study of the environment
and its result on organisms or the different systems involving the
probing of biological processes, i.e., growth and life span, and the
Earth systems and their evolution.
h) Plant Sciences: This involves studying of plants and how they survive,
involving their structure, physiology, development, and classification.
i) Translational Medical Science: projects that aim to improve human
health and longevity by translating novel discoveries in the biomedical
sciences into effective activities and tools for clinical and public health
use.
j) Microbiology: The study of microorganisms, including bacteria,
viruses, fungi, prokaryotes, and eukaryotes as well as antimicrobial
and antibiotic substances.
2. Physical Science is the science concerned with the study of inanimate
natural objects as well as the understanding of the material universe and
its phenomena.

Here are the sub-categories of scientific fields under Physical Science:

a) Chemistry: This explores the science studying matter’s composition,

structure, properties, and its reactions.
b) Computational Biology and Bioinformatics: This focuses primarily on
computer science and mathematics and the discipline and techniques
involve in it relative to the biological systems.

2
c) Embedded Systems: This studies focuses conveyed information via
signals and waveforms for purpose of enhancing communication,
control, and/or sensing using electrical systems.
d) Energy: Chemical: Studies involving biological and chemical processes
of renewable energy sources, clean transport, and alternative fuels.
e) Energy: Physical: Studies of renewable energy structures/processes
including energy production and efficiency.
f) Engineering: Mechanics: This study involves the movement or
structure, the science and engineering behind it.
g) Environmental Engineering: This study focuses to solve environmental
problems, i.e., supply of water, the disposal of waste, or the control of
pollution by engineering or developing processes and infrastructure.
h) Material Science: The study of the characteristics and uses of various
materials with improvements to their design which may add to their
advanced engineering performance.
i) Mathematics: This is the study of the numbers and symbols involving
its measurement, properties, and relationships of quantities and sets.
j) Physics and Astronomy: Physics is the study of matter and energy their
interaction.

3. Robotics and Intelligence Machines: This is the science of utilizing

intelligent machine as a vital factor in reducing the dependence on
human intervention.

Here are the sub-categories of scientific fields under this:

a) Biomechanics: This involves the system which imitate the role of

mechanics in biological systems.
b) Cognitive Systems: This involves the apparatus that function equally
to the ways humans think and process information.
c) Control Theory: This studies investigate the behavior of dynamical
systems with inputs, and how feedback modified their behavior.
d) Machine Learning: Construction and/or study of algorithms that can
learn from data.
e) Robot Kinematics: The study of movement in robotic systems.
