1. Reflect on what you have learned today.

Today I learned about the topic of cultural competency which is the ability to relate to

and understand people of different cultures from oneself. In addition, I learned about the four

main components of cultural competence which include awareness, attitude, knowledge, and

skills. With these components in mind, I was able to listen to my fellow classmates when

discussing different cultures, traditions, celebrations, baby ceremonies, and ethnic meals. Under

traditions, we discussed different practices such as the celebration of Christmas and Easter, as

well as Chinese New Year. I also learned that although I myself have not experienced the arrival

of new life, my peers celebrate this event in different ways such as Baptism, baby showers, and

more. Among most of the practices that my peers and I discussed, family and social gatherings

seem to be the highlight and centre of importance. Lastly, I learned about the different definitions

of groups of Indigenous peoples including Aboriginal, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.

With this knowledge, I hope to become a better person, student, ally and help me in my future

career opportunities.
