16. SERIOUS
A. The house rat is one of the smallest yet deadliest animals on earth. Not only can this animal
survive anywhere, rat-borne diseases are said to have killed more people than all the wars in
history.
B. The rats looked with pity at the sobbing young woman if only they could do something to help.
But, they knew it would be a tremendous risk on their part because if the evil woman even
found out, they were as good as dead.
17. TRAGIC
A. The man’s eyes became very sad. He did not want to be the bearer of bad news but he had no
choice. The family deserved to know the young soldier’s fate. The soldier was killed in battle.
B. He saw the fear in the child’s eyes so he walked towards her and together, they sat in a corner

There was a strange look on her face as Jenny looked up at her. The maid had bad news for

A. Nena knew what she had to do. Now was not the time to give up. She has gone this far and
there was no turning back. She tried to get up again and again but found herself back down
each time.
B. Roy pedaled as fast as he could, and at last, he saw the checked flag. Victory was just a few
meters away. He pedaled harder and harder and at last, he crossed the finish line.! He won!
The crowd cheered and Roy felt exhilarating. He was the first amputee to have won the race.

A. The old woman walked slowly towards the window as she did so many times in the past year
and a half. A lone tear rolled down her cheek as she though once more of her long love. She
knew in her heart that he was alive somewhere. She longed for her return.

veterinarian who gave her pet some medication. But Sugar won’t eat. After a few days, Sugar died.

23. Children rushed to buy tickets for the basketball game. Their favorite basketball players will be
seen in action and they just can’t wait to get a glimpse of them. The children were all laughing and
talking at the same time. Everybody inside the gym cheered when the basketball players finally
entered.
24. “Please don’t cry. Tell the kids that their daddy is fighting for them, for his wife, for his people and
for his country,” said the departing soldier.
25. The Reyes family was up already, and so were the rest of the people in the whole town. Bands have
been playing merrily since 6 o’clock in the morning; church bells have been ringing gaily, too. The
