of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes
varicella (chickenpox). Primary infection with VZV causes varicella.

ganglia. VZV can reactive later in a person’s life and cause a painful,
maculopapular rash called herpes zoster.

4. Cold sores — also called fever blisters — are a common viral

infection. They are tiny, fluid-filled blisters on and around your lips.
Cold sores spread from person to person by close contact, such as
kissing. They're usually caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-
1), and less commonly herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2).

5. Chlamydia psittaci is a type of bacteria that often infects birds. Less

commonly, these bacteria can infect people and cause a disease
called psittacosis. Psittacosis can cause mild illness or pneumonia
