It is designed for operation in a transverse powertrain for FWD (front wheel drive) vehicles. This transmission has a 4-element torque converter design, which includes a TCC (torque converter clutch) and a geartrain with 4 planetary gearsets. The solenoid body tag on the transmission case contains the 13-digit solenoid body strategy and the 7-digit solenoid body identification. When a new solenoid body is installed, a new solenoid body strategy file is downloaded into the PCM. 4 replacement solenoid body tag is supplied with the new solenoid body which contains the 13-digit solenoid body strategy and the 7-digit solenoid body identification. The new tag is placed over the original solenoid body tag. Solenoid Band Number The solenoids are calibrated from the factory and are not all the same. The solenoids can be replaced separately, but only with a replacement solenoid with an injector nozzle and band number that matches the solenoid being replaced. When solenoid(s) are replaced, the new solenoid band number must match the old solenoid band number. The band number is next to the two-dimensional matrix barcode on the side of the solenoid and will be a 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. ‘There are three different types of solenoids art Number jescription 7638. Start Stop Accumulator (present on vehicle equipped with Stop/Start) ftem jescription fb jolts (2 required) R tudbolt \uto-Start-Stop accumulator ransmission case For Stop / Start purposes 8F Taransmission comes equipped with a Transmission Hydraul Accumulator, an electronically controlled device that can store pressure while the engine is running, then during a stop/start engine restart can release that pressure into the line pressure hydraulic circuit, allowing the transmission to engage before the main pump is outputting pressure. This allows quick response on the engine restart because the transmission reengages before the engine starts. The Transmission Hydraulic Accumulator is controlled by an on/off solenoid, which is turned on to release the pressure stored in the accumulator, The solenoid is controlled by “smart driver” chip - when the main micro sends out the commanded state the smart driver returns fault information (open, short to power, short to ground). The accumulator is also functionally monitored during stop/start engine restarts - if excessive clutch slip is detected the accumulator did not discharge, which could be due to the accumulator stuck open or closed. If a Transmission Hydraulic Accumulator fault is present the stop / start system will be taken out of operation with the engine running (no more stop events while the fault is present). Circuit failures can recover during a drive cycle, but functional can only be detected when the accumulator is turned on during a stop/start engine restart - those faults will require a key cycle to recover. Transmission Control Module (TCM) All Diesel engine applications will use a TCM. Some gas engine applications may use a TCM, but generally gas engines will use a PCM that controls both the engine and transmission. The TCM has the same module diagnostics as an ECM or PCM - see miscellaneous CPU tests. for details. Main Control Components. item ransmission case Main control-to-transmission case seperator plate Main control [Solencid body-to-main control seperator plate [Solenoid body assembly Main control cover ‘The main control assembly consists of a valve body and a solenoid body. Both the valve body and the solenoid body contain hydraulic shift valves. The solenoid body contains the shift solenoids that control the hydraulic valves. The solenoid body can be serviced as an assembly with the solenoids or the solenoids can be serviced individually. The solenoid body is controlled by the PCM. The PCM has software stored in it specific to the solenoid body currently in the transmission, called the solenoid body strategy. A new solenoid body strategy must be downloaded into the PCM anytime a new solenoid body is installed, Transmission External Sealing The transmission fluid pan has a reusable gasket. ‘The transmission fluid cooler tubes use 2 rubber seals with plastic backing rings to seal the tubes to the transmission case. The transmission has 6 pressure test tap plugs. The transmission fluid fill plug is near the LH halfshaft seal, ‘The transmission fluid drain plug Is at the bottom of the transmission case. When determining the best operating strategy for transmission operation, the PCM uses input information from engine and driver related sensors and switches. In addition, the PCM receives input signals from transmission related sensors and switches. The PCM uses these signals when determining transmission operating strategy Using all of these input signals, the PCM can determine when the time and conditions are right for a shift or when to apply or release the TCC. It also determines the best line pressure to optimize shift engagement feel. To accomplish this, the PCM uses output solenoids to control transmission operation Component Description Sensors and Switches ‘The PCM controls the electronic functions of this transmission. The PCM receives input signals from engine and transmission sensors and uses these inputs to control line pressure, shift time, TCC and shift solenoids. When a new solenoid body or transmission is installed, the scan tool must be used to get the solenoid body strategy data file and download it into the PCM If the PCM is replaced and the PCM data cannot be inhaled or exhaled, the solenoid body identification and solenoid body strategy must be downloaded into the PCM. HOOP (Hold Out Of Park) solenoid / Park Lock Pawl Solenoid item [Description ft lArmature/pin assembly 2 Part information The 8F24 utilizes five shift (A-E) solenoids that are linear force solenoids. Unlike previous shift solenoids they are mechanical in nature in that no transmission fluid passes through them. {Acronym.CIDAS}s use a armature/pin assembly that moves a control valve in the main control valve body to control and apply hydraulic fluid pressure. Each clutch (A-E) has a corresponding shift solenoid (A-E) that is directly proportional in that zero current equals zero pressure and maximum current equals maximum pressure. Since there is no pressure with zero current if the power is interrupted to the shift solenoids none of the clutch packs are able to engage. Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Line Pressure Control (LPC) tem [Description ft [Solenoid nozzle 2 Part information ‘The TCC solenoid is a variable force solenoid that varies hydraullic pressure by actuating a hydraulic valve, The TCC solenoid uses proportional operation. As the current from the TCM (transmission control module) decreases, the pressure from the solenoid decreases. As the current from the TCM increases, the pressure from the solenoid increases.
