SECTION A
QUESTION 1
(a) Briefly describe, with the help of sketches, the various types of concrete bridge decks
used in bridge construction,
(b) Figure QI shows a three-span continuous bridge deck with piers 0 and 2 pinned for
rotation and rigid vertically, pier 1 pinned for rotation and with vertical stiffness ky) =
2000kNim, and pier 3 is rigid against rotation and deflection. EI = 20000kN(mm)’.
Analyse the deck by using slope deflection equations for end moments and plot the
bending moment diagram.

Design a beam of composite construction for the following requirements:
Flange width provided by slab = 1800mm
‘Thickness of the slab = 120mm
Prefabricated unit shall be a steel beam section
Span ofthe beam = = 14,5 ~
Total load on the beam = 30kN/m i
‘The allowable stresses in the concrete and steel are:
f, (bending stress in concrete) = 7N/mm?
fi (tensile stress in steel)
m (modular ratio)
Design for moment: [15 marks]
Check for shear: [10 marks]
QUESTION 3
Design the four-pile cap shown in Figure Q3 if the characteristic strengths of the
reinforcement and concrete are 425N/(mm)’ and 30N/(mm)* respectively. The design

‘A simply supported plate girder has a span of 12m, and carries two concentrated loads on
the top flange at the third points, consisting of 450KN dead load and 300kN imposed load.
In addition, it carries a uniformly distributed dead load of 20KN/m which includes an
allowance for self weight and an imposed load of 10kN/m. The compression flange is
fully restrained laterally, ‘The girder is supported on a heavy stiffened bracket at each end,
The material is grade 43 steel, Design the girder utilizing tension field action.
Design of web, load-bearing and end stiffness: [15 marks]
Design of end post and drawing of sketch: [10 marks]
QUESTION 6
(@) Describe the general principle involved in the “analysis by stress concept” of
prestressed beams.
(b) A prentensioned beam of rectangular section 80mm wide by 120mm deep is to be
designed to support concentrated loads of 4KN each at one-third span joints over an
effective span of 3 metres. The permissible stresses in concrete are limited to zero
and 1.4N/mm? tension at transfer and working load respectively. If 3mm diameter
wires initially stressed to 1400N/mm? are used, find the number of wires required and
the eccentricity of the prestressing force assuming 20 percent loss in prestress.
Weight of concrete is 25kN/m’.
