Amazon - Amazon obsesses over making each customer’s experience uniquely personal. For example,
the Amazon.com site greets customers with their very own home pages, complete with personalized
site content and recommendations based on their past purchase and browsing histories and the
purchasing patterns of customers with similar profiles.
More broadly, market offerings also include other entities, such as persons, places, organizations,
information, ideas, and causes. For example, to market the cause of suicide prevention, rapper Logic
worked with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL) to create a seven-minute online public
service video embedded with his song “1-800-273-8255,” the NSPL phone number.

Marketing Myopia - Many sellers make the mistake of paying more attention to the specific products
they offer than to the benefits and experiences produced by these products. These sellers suffer from
marketing myopia.

Nike - Beyond shoes, Nike markets a way of life, a genuine passion for sports, a “just-do-it” attitude.
Customers don’t just wear their Nikes, they experience them. As the company once stated, “Nike has
always known the truth—it’s not so much the shoes but where they take you.” Nike’s mission isn’t to
“make better products,” it’s to “bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world.” Few
brands have become more ever-present and valued than Nike in their customers’ lives and
conversations.

Airbnb (Don’t stay there. Live there) the Airbnb team interviewed hundreds of guests and hosts
around the world. Time and again, they heard guests say that the last thing they wanted was to be
tourists. Instead, Airbnb customers wanted to be insiders—to engage with people and immerse
themselves in local cultures. According to the company, 86 percent of users picked Airbnb because
they wanted to live more like a local. They wanted to belong.

3. Question marks. Question marks are low-share business units in high-growth markets. They
require a lot of cash to hold their share, let alone increase it. Management has to think hard about
which question marks it should try to build into stars and which should be phased out.
4. Dogs. Dogs are low-growth, low-share businesses and products. They may generate enough cash to
maintain themselves but do not promise to be large sources of cash.
The BCG and other formal methods revolutionized strategic planning. However, such centralized
approaches have limitations: They can be difficult, time-consuming, and costly to implement.

Microsoft (Adapting to the Fast-Changing Marketing Environment) - In the new digitally connected
world, Microsoft found itself lagging more-glamorous competitors such as Google, Apple, Samsung,
and even Amazon and Facebook, which provided a complete slate of all things digital—not just the
software but also the smart devices, connecting technologies, and even digital destinations. Although
still financially strong and still the world’s dominant PC software maker, Microsoft lost some of its
luster. In turn, the company’s growth stalled and profits languished at early 2000s’ levels for a dozen
years or more. Microsoft needed to change with the times, and fast. So Microsoft began a sweeping
transformation to align itself better with the new digital world order. More than just a PC software
developer, Microsoft set out to become a full-line digital competitor. In tune with the times, the
company pursued a new “mobile first, cloud first” strategy. It developed a mobile version of its
Windows operating system—the longtime company cash cow. And it created Office 365—a
cloudbased subscription version of its market-dominating suite of productivity apps.

To create value for customers and build meaningful relationships with them, marketers must first
gain fresh, deep insights into what customers need and want. Such customer insights come from good
marketing information. Companies use these customer insights to develop a competitive advantage.
P&G(Customer Insights and Creating Irresistibly Superior Experiences) - P&G’s goal is to create
innovative brands that give consumers an “irresistibly superior experience.” In these fastchanging
times, however, to create such irresistibly superior experiences, P&G must first create a steady flow of
deep, fresh insights into consumers’ constantly changing needs and behaviors and into just what it is
that will make the company’s brands irresistibly superior. How does P&G gain these insights?
Through marketing research—lots of marketing research. Each year, the company invests some $350
million in marketing research, conducting more than 15,000 research studies and interacting with
more than 5 million consumers, amassing mountains of information and insights into what its
consumers need and how they think, act, and buy.

SHINOLA( Nobody’s Confusing Sh*t with Shinola Anymore) - Such success might seem surprising.
At first blush, Shinola’s name and its Detroit roots seem incongruous with the premium-priced luxury
goods it makes and sells. But dig deeper and you find that everything about Shinola binds together
strongly under a carefully crafted, all-American brand image. In an age of products “made in China,”
Shinola is on a mission to revive old-time American values. Why the Shinola name, and why the
Detroit location? “We’re starting with the reinvigoration of a storied American brand, and a storied
American city,” says the company. Shinola “is a brand committed to turning out high-quality
products in America with... American suppliers and American labor,” says one analyst. “To drive
home that commitment, the company selected Detroit—the buckle of the American rust belt—as its
base.” By linking the brand with Detroit’s legacy of hardworking people, resilience, and
craftsmanship, Shinola is selling more than watches, bicycles, and accessories—it’s selling a made-in-
America comeback story.

What Is a Product? We define a product as anything that can be offered to a market for attention,
acquisition, use, or consumption that might satisfy a want or need. Products include more than just
tangible objects, such as cars, clothing, or smartphones. Broadly defined, products also include services,
events, persons, places, organizations, and ideas or a mixture of these.
What is service? An activity, benefit, or satisfaction offered for sale that is essentially intangible and
does not result in the ownership of anything.
STARBUCKS: Delivering the “Starbucks Experience” - Starbucks didn’t sell just coffee, it sold the
“Starbucks Experience”—“an uplifting experience that enriches people’s lives one moment, one human
being, one extraordinary cup of coffee at a time.” Starbucks gave customers what it calls a “third
place”—a place away from home and away from work. At Starbucks, the smells, the sound of beans
grinding, and watching baristas blend and brew the brand’s specialty coffees all became as much or
more a part of the customer experience as the coffee itself.

Branding - A name, term, sign, symbol, or design or a combination of these that identifies the
products or services of one seller or group of sellers and differentiates them from those of competitors.
Packaging - Packaging involves designing and producing the container or wrapper for a product.
Traditionally, the primary function of the package was to hold and protect the product. In recent times,
however, packaging has become an important marketing tool as well.

GOOGLE (...er, Alphabet): The New Product Moonshot Factory - At many companies, new product
development is a cautious, step-by-step affair that might take years to unfold. In contrast, Google’s
freewheeling new product development process moves at the speed of light. In the time that it takes
most competitors to refine and approve an initial idea for a major new product or serviced, Google has
already implemented it. Google’s famously chaotic innovation process has unleashed a seemingly
unending flurry of diverse products, many of which are market leaders in their categories.

Product life cycle (PLC) - The course of a product’s sales and profits over its lifetime.
1) Product development: The company
finds and develops a new product idea.
During product development, sales are
zero, and the company’s investment
costs mount.
2) Introduction: A period of slow sales
growth as the product is introduced in
the market. Profits are nonexistent in this
stage because of the heavy expenses of
product introduction.

3) Growth: A period of rapid market acceptance and increasing profits.
4) Maturity: A period of slowdown in sales growth because the product has achieved
acceptance by most potential buyers. Profits level off or decline because of increased
marketing outlays to defend the product against competition.
5) Decline: The period when sales fall off and profits drop.
